Primary school places !!!

Is anyone getting nervous for the primary school places next week? It's all I can thunk about now , the 18th simply can't get here soon enough , I would be happy if my DS got any of his 3 choices but does anyone have any idea of his chances if getting in one of them if they are all within a radius if one and a half miles from our home. My ideal choice would his first choice which is a catholic school which is 0.6 miles from home but is always oversubscribed, we attend mass every week and had all forms signed by the priest etc but don't know how much of a chance he has if getting it , any advice would be great as am worrying alot now the date is getting nearer.

Thanks for reading and sorry for rambling xxx

Another Surrey-dweller here.

Pozzled · 18/04/2012 05:10

Just got woken up by DD squeezing into bed with us, and couldn't get back to sleep. So checked emails and..... we got our first choice. So happy and relieved.

Good luck to everyone who's still waiting.

shelley72 · 18/04/2012 07:07

well done everyone who has already found out and got there choices and got what hey what they wished for.

what do you mean sunnyday its harder second time around. you mean i have all this trauma again Grin???

skinmysunshine · 18/04/2012 07:20

Hi Sunnyday yes after getting lots of great advice on here I eventually wrote to the education head of the council anf the councillor responsible for education and told them I was contacting the press about the disgraceful situation in my borough. I had a place at my closest school 3 days later

surreygirl · 18/04/2012 07:31

As my name says another Surrey Mum waiting to hear about my DS. First one of mine to start school... so nervous about this as I'm not hopeful we'll get any of our three preferences :( Roll on 5pm... I need a Wine at 7.30 am!!!

gaggyboots · 18/04/2012 07:37

I hope you all get your choice of primary school today :)

I am sorry to hi jack but I just wanted to get some advice on a similar topic.DS1 will start reception this coming September, and currently we are living in Wales. DP has accepted a promotion which means we will be moving south Devon way, and now I am feeling so apprehensive about our son starting school.

If we move say July, how do I try to get my son into a local school? I am so worried, should I ring the county council of the place we will be moving to? Technically all the spaces would have been taken already? :(

Sorry for going on, and sorry to hi jack, but reading this post has given me the courage to write on here. I am pleased for DP but it couldn't have come at a more iconvenient time tbh.

Thanks for reading x

Arabellamilla · 18/04/2012 07:51

Id ring and find out what the process is were you are moving gaggyboots and as soon as possible !

I have to wait till 6pm tonight, last year they had over 200 applicants for 30 places at our school of choice, I have two other kids there and live close but still scared, This is going to be a crap day and its raining :(

CWest30 · 18/04/2012 07:52

Wow, everyone finds out so early!

We have to wait until the 2ND MAY feels like forever!!!!!

We are quite lucky in the fact that we live in the catchment area of 3 schools, all within walking distance, (although I dont fancy trekking up the hill to one of them twice a day) esp as I will have our 2nd child in a buggy by then.

The school we want is obviously the one closest to us, we live one street away. However, we have friends that live on the same street and they didnt get a place......they ended up getting our second choice. Oh well, not too long to go, I have a scan 2 days before so trying to focus on that instead!

Good luck everyone :)

MiladyGardenia · 18/04/2012 08:03

Another Surrey mum here feeling the nerves. I have absolutely no reason to worry, given that we live 200 yards from the school, but I'm still bizarrely fretful.

Roll on 5 pm.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 18/04/2012 08:09

Milady I know what you mean! I don't find out tll next week and every indication is that we will get DD2 in as it is sibling preference BUT I am paranoid and keep thinking I did the form wrong or something!

Good luck to those who are still waiting and contgrats to those who know!

BellaOfTheBalls · 18/04/2012 08:39

gaggyboots ring up councils & find out the procedure ASAP. My situation is different; I found out just before the closing date for applications but there has to be provision for children moving into the area.

Congrats (is that right?!) to everyone who got first choices & good luck to anyone finding out today. Grin

sunnyday123 · 18/04/2012 08:44

shelly72 - not all schools prioritise siblings (most do but not all) - thus applying for the second child can be harder as its more desperate when 1 dc is settled - no one wants 2 school runs but very unfair to move a settled child too.

sunnyday123 · 18/04/2012 08:46

don't worry :) though most schools do - just check your schools criteria - there's no way i'd have put dd1 in school if i'd known they wont give sibling priority

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 18/04/2012 08:46

aghhhhhhhh - today's the day, couldn't sleep last night :(

Congrats to all those who've got positive results so far.

StickingLaboutin · 18/04/2012 08:49

Well done all those who got what they wanted. We are a 6pm email out here. I don't think my head can take it!

gaggyboots · 18/04/2012 08:49

thanks for your response arabellamilla and belllaoftheballs, I will ring some later this afternoon, what makes it more difficult is that I am not certain as yet where we will live as I do not know the area too well...I will ring the councils which I think is more likely we will live and go from there. That might decide the location somewhat perhaps.

Scary stuff, I am hoping they have provision for children moving into the area even for for starting reception?!(most councils do right?!otherise why would they have appeals procedures for those who do not get into their choices?)Eeeeek!!

Good luck for those of you finding out today :)

sunnyday123 · 18/04/2012 09:02

gaggyboots- i would also contact the LEA. As i understand it - you can't go on any waiting lists until you have an address sorted but they should give you an idea of areas - although a lot can change by July.

They don't reserve places or hold places back for people moving into an area - they are not allowed to do that. There is a system called fair access protocol which means that if all schools are full then a school can go over the 30 class size limit but thats a last resort - they will likely find you a school within an acceptable distance (which can be several miles away) which has places free.

Whatever school you get offered, you can still go on the waiting lists and appeal for schools you prefer - if you move in July you will be added to those lists in criteria order - so if you move next to school you may go above people who live further who've been on list for ages etc depending on what the schools criteria is.

Waspie · 18/04/2012 09:17

My authorities website just says that the offers will be posted online on Friday but no mention of what time.

We had to put 4 choices. All 4 are Ofsted outstanding and they are all in the top 5 in the borough in the stats published on the Keystage tests. But pretty much all of the schools in this area are outstanding. We have just put the 4 closest to where we live, including our catchment school, and have fingers crossed.

Very nervous now. I dreamt about school places last night Blush

Congrats to all who have got the placements they wanted Smile

wigglesrock · 18/04/2012 09:21

Congratulations to those who have heard - waiting on the postman here in NI Grin DD2 waiting to hear, dd1 is in our prefered primary school but hugely over subscribed this year and we are outside the catchment area.

Sibling already in the school is the second criteria, living in the area is first with regards to the school. Just to point out our feckin' postman is usually here by now Grin

mammanetta · 18/04/2012 09:32

good luck everyone - also waiting with bated breath over here - massively oversubscribed non-denominational local primary is 1 minute away from us, but due to have around 40 out of 60 places going to siblings, the school thinks (based on current number in their nursery class plus extras) - eek - soon you'll have to live in the sodding playground to be close enough :(
wigglesrock how unusual to have siblings as a second criteria after distance - that never happens here in London - sometimes wish it would though, as all us parents with single kids often are at a disadvantage!
Good luck anyway :)
