What time does your child go to sleep on a school night?

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 13/09/2011 21:30

My son is 9 and apparently the only one in his class who goes to sleep before 10pm on a school night. On weekends 'everybody else' stays up until midnight. Hmm

In an ideal world I would like to see him in bed by 8pm on a school night. He takes ages to drop off to sleep (I mean when you tell him he can read for half an hour in bed and forget to go up to turn off his light he's still reading when you go upstairs to go to the loo at 10pm Blush.)Most nights its usually lights off by 8.30pm.

My 6 year old is in bed by 8pm on a good night. Quite often it's 8.15-8.30 as I find it hard juggling the two bed times and he keeps getting out of bed and I basically need to get more organised. Ideally I would like to see him in bed by 7.30.

Could we have a school night bedtime roll call?

Just put your child's age and bedtime.

I want to show my 9 year old this thread so he can believe me that the ones who say they go to bed at 10pm are probably not telling the truth........

7pm - dressing for bed/hair brushed/teeth etc, then storytime which takes us to,
7.30pm - lights out
Sound asleep most nights within 10-20 minutes after that.

7.15am - Up for school

DD is 5 (just)

BastardDog · 17/09/2011 21:14

10yo lights out 8.30
11yo lights out 9.00

wine0 · 17/09/2011 21:38

DS is year 1 aged 6 - upstairs at 7, teeth, hear him read, read to him by 7:30 then he reads til 8 if he wants to but generally he's always fast asleep by the time I come up stairs at 8.

DD - 22months - upstairs 6:50 with whoever isn't doing DS sane routine but lights out at 7:15. Usually asleep within 10 mins

DD wakes up anytime between 6:16-6:45
DS wakes up between 6:30-7:30

shergar · 17/09/2011 22:37

DD nearly 9, DS 7 - in the bath/shower at 7.30pm, read a bit and lights out by 8pm. Same at weekends tbh.

I have just been talking to a friend from another school about this thread and her son (6) has tea at 4 and goes to bed at 6pm and apparently falls asleep instantly and then sleeps until 7-7:30 the following morning.
That seems a lot of sleep for a 6 year old, to me.

rusmum · 17/09/2011 22:52

dd's 3 and 7 up at 7 story, light out 7.30
we delay by an hour weekends xx or thay can go at the same time and watch a dvd x

We get up at 6.30

PotPourri · 17/09/2011 23:25

Plenty of sleep is good for them and good for you. I think the time you have is fine. If he woudl like to read, maybe you could extend it a bit, still into bed the same time, with half an hour sleep.

don't do TV though, it overstimulates their mind

SweetGrapes · 18/09/2011 01:23

DD age 10: in bed with book or toys by 8, asleep between 8:30 and 9.
DS age 5: same but wakes a bit later than dd.

SansaLannister · 18/09/2011 01:29

DD1, age 8
and
DD2, age 5 share a bedroom. Lights out at about 10 to 8 and lights on 7.45AM. They're usually asleep by 8.

Weekends it's different, usually they stay up on Sat. nights as we watch a family film together.

nooka · 18/09/2011 05:26

ds and dd (12 and 11) go to bed at 9, lights off at 9.30pm (up between 7 and 7.30am).

ben5 · 18/09/2011 05:39

hazeyjane · 18/09/2011 06:03

dd1 (5) year1
dd2 (4) reception

both in bed about 6.30, asleep by 7. If tired they'll usually go to sleep at 6.

GeorgeEliot · 18/09/2011 08:56

9 and 12 - 9 pm on school nights, 9.30 at weekends and in holidays.
Sometimes let the 12-year-old read a bit longer as he's not a great reader.
Sometimes allowed to stay up until 1/2 time if football is on.
Up between 6.45 and 7.15 am

benjalamummy · 18/09/2011 11:18

9 yr old nephew goes to bed at 9

This is apparently earlier than anyone in his class. However, he also gets the least pocket money, in fact he is the poorest boy in his class, one boy has £100,000 actually! And the only one not on Facebook and Twitter (evn though their mums deny this passionately). Poor deprived child Wink

HeadfirstForHalos · 18/09/2011 13:11

Depending on the days activites-

ds2 (3) is in bed by 7.30/8.00

dd2 (6) and ds1 (7) in bed 8.00/8.30, ds1 can read until 9.00

dd1 (9) is in bed by 9.00 and can read for 1/2 hr. If she goes up earlier than that she simply can't sleep and ends up being awake a lot longer.

Most 9 year old I know are in bed for about 9, her cubs group doesn't finish until 8.45 and the dc (aged 8-10) don't come out looking exhausted :)

RedHotPokers · 18/09/2011 14:29

Dd 5yo 7pm, up between 6.30 & 7am.

missmogwi · 18/09/2011 14:47

DD9 bed by 8/8:30 although she reads for ages.
DD7 loves her bed so 7:30.

Weekends both in bed by 9:30.

joruth · 18/09/2011 14:59

DD1 just 10; in bed 8.30 lights out 9pm up by 7am
DS1 age 8; in bed 8.20 (hopefully) lights out 8.45 (always) up by 7am
DD2 6, read to by me 7.15, lights out 7.30 up by 7.15am
DD3 nearly 5 read to then lights out 7.30pm up by 7.30am

I am also horribly strict...i can cope in the mornings because the kids go to bed at night. We have a late night ONLY on Friday when we have swimming then family film night and everyone goes to be ( including me) at the end of the film...usually 9pm ish!

Who cares what their friends say...

  1. they are probably not being entirely truthful,
  2. They probably are sleep deprived and horrible to live with,
  3. We also count and we need the time (and the sleep) too

interesting to see the answers though!!!!

I'm a teacher. PLEASE. PARENTS. GET YOUR KIDS IN BED BY 8PM AT THE VERY LATEST!!!!
Trying to teach 30 kids who've had zero sleep because soft mum let them stay up til 10pm or later is one of my biggest gripes. Stop being soft!
(oh and actually sorry, but I think most kids are telling the truth...most parents now seem to have zero parenting skills and are soft as anything...be the one decent parent, do the decent thing, get your son to bed EARLY!!)

schroeder · 18/09/2011 19:04

Kitesurfgirl you've probably just pissed off most people on this thread. Hmm

mathanxiety · 18/09/2011 19:07

Bed or sleep, Kitedurfgirl?

I used to be sent to bed at 6:30 as a child and spent the whole evening bothering my parents for drinks of water, etc., etc., as did my sisters. It was murder for my parents, and my mother is the first to admit that if she had it over she would be 'soft' and let us stay up til much later and let dad enjoy some time with us in the evenings (which he would have loved) but instead she followed the accepted wisdom of the time and didn't bother dad with the children's presence when he got home from work, which is what I suspect getting children off to bed at insanely early hours is all about.

My DCs never once get up or bother anyone once in bed, never have. We read and chat together until bedtime, or watch a film after dinner. Sometimes someone has school reading to do. The time together is very precious to us as a family and the children have never been in trouble in school and all have done very well academically.

mathanxiety · 18/09/2011 19:08

sorry, surf not durf [wince]

taurean · 18/09/2011 19:08

DS (just 6) bed 6.45, reads until 7.30
DD (3.5) bed 6.45, has a stories read to her until 7 then lights out

Some people have commented it's too early but if we let DS stay up later, even as a one off we really notice bad behaviour creeping in!

orienteerer · 18/09/2011 19:10

I support Kitesurfgirl, DS has always been in bed at 7 or 7.30, lights out at 8pm regardless of day of the weekShock..........however he is now 9 and at school until 6.15pm 3 x days per week so bedtime is now 8pm with lights out at 8.30pm. I have to wake him at 06.30 every morning which I don't like to do and shows that he needs the sleep!
