What time does your child go to sleep on a school night?

My son is 9 and apparently the only one in his class who goes to sleep before 10pm on a school night. On weekends 'everybody else' stays up until midnight. Hmm

In an ideal world I would like to see him in bed by 8pm on a school night. He takes ages to drop off to sleep (I mean when you tell him he can read for half an hour in bed and forget to go up to turn off his light he's still reading when you go upstairs to go to the loo at 10pm Blush.)Most nights its usually lights off by 8.30pm.

My 6 year old is in bed by 8pm on a good night. Quite often it's 8.15-8.30 as I find it hard juggling the two bed times and he keeps getting out of bed and I basically need to get more organised. Ideally I would like to see him in bed by 7.30.

Could we have a school night bedtime roll call?

Just put your child's age and bedtime.

I want to show my 9 year old this thread so he can believe me that the ones who say they go to bed at 10pm are probably not telling the truth........

Oh and when DD was 9 her bedtime was 9 o clock and 8.30 when she was 8.

I feel rather sorry for older kids who have early bedtimes enforced, a friends DD who is 10 still has an 8pm bedtime which means going to bed while it's still light in the summer and also missing out on seeing TV programmes that they all discuss at school the next day.

FootprintsOnTheMoon · 16/09/2011 14:21

DD (7) - 9.30pm

(not ideal tbh - she really struggles with mornings- but takes ages to drop off)

schroeder · 16/09/2011 14:24

DS 12 clean teeth and in his room by 8.30; he's usually sound a sleep by 9ish.

DD 9 tucked up by 7.45; hopefully asleep by 8.30 she likes to read though Smile.

Both up about 7am.

Erebus · 16/09/2011 14:25

DS, 12 in bed 9pm, reading; lights off 9.30pm usually
DS, 10 read to at 8.20, light off 8.30-45pm

Both up at 7-7.15am

Erebus · 16/09/2011 14:26

does not need sleep DS2 also tells me he's one of 'only 4 children' in his class who aren't allowed to play Call of Duty.

Oh yeah.

Mumof3beautifulchildren · 16/09/2011 14:27

Ds 4 and DD 9 both in bed at 8pm and they usually fall asleep pretty quick.

DD 11 (seniors) usually 8.30 and I allow to read till about 9pm.

All 3 have to be up at 6.30 am .

I am a bit more relaxed at weekends and holidays ( to my shame ) but only if theyve been exceptionally good. If they are naughty they go at week times :) xxx

northernruth · 16/09/2011 14:28

DD is 4 and just started school, she's knackered so bedtime has been brought forward to 7 from 7.30. Will probably stay at 7.30 on the weekend.

There's quite a bit of research on how important sleep is for growth. My friend's son has never gone to bed at a reasonable time and is barely 5'5" at 16, despite his dad being 6ft. Anecdotal I know (and hopefully he'll grow in the next two years) but worth pointing out to a 9 year old Wink

buterflies · 16/09/2011 14:29

DS 6 goes to bed at 8pm and asleep by 8.30 except Fri when he goes to youth club and is usually asleep by 9.45 on Friday only tho.

Only1inthevillage · 16/09/2011 14:31

DS aged 7 in bed at 8:00 pm on school night - reads in bed until quarter past.

On a Friday / Saturday night I let him stay up until 9:00 unless he's knackered for some reason.

CocktailQueen · 16/09/2011 14:37

dd - almost 8 - in bed by 7.15, reads till 7.45 ish. Maybe a bit later at weekends.
ds - 4.5 - in bed by 7.

Migsy1 · 16/09/2011 15:03

I like this thread!

10 year old son - 8:30pm
8 year and 5 year old sons - 8pm

SecretSquirrels · 16/09/2011 15:05

Older children need their sleep just as much.
DS1 - 15 -9.30 school nights , no limit Fri / Sat, sometimes he'll be up until 1am others he'll be in bed before 11pm pm.
DS2 - 13 - 9.00 school nights and usually between 10 and 11 at weekends.
They get up for school at 7.30.

Folu · 16/09/2011 15:14

16 years - 22.30
13 years - 21.30

DSD, 5, second year of primary school, bedtime is aim for 7:30 usually asleep by 8.

She has stayed up later than that on weekends and on school breaks, but the latest I've seen her manage is 10 and we usually try to stick to 7:30/8 regardless. She's a mumpy-pants if she doesn't get 12ish hours of sleep and still often awake at 8:30 on weekends.

HappyWanderer · 16/09/2011 16:11

That should say "still often awake at 8:30 in the morning on weekends". Mumsnet needs an edit button.

Mum2Luke · 16/09/2011 16:47

I wish my DS (9) would go without fuss at a reasonable time, I think 8.30 pm on a school night is quite late enough but he wants to go at 9 or later. He does get up at 7.30 am without me asking but I still think he needs his sleep.

Trouble is his older brother (20) and sister (18) are up late and he thinks he's missing out. He is allowed to go late on Friday and Saturdays if he behaves all week at school.

Pisky · 16/09/2011 17:05

DD (almost 9) and DS (6) both go up about 7:30 and ideally in bed by 8pm on school nights. Sometimes bit later 8:30 non school nights.

Would like DS in bed earlier but by the time dh gets home, dinner is eaten etc thats about what I can manage. They also share a room so more practical to go same time.

If DS v tired he will go to bed earlier,

EssentialFattyAcid · 16/09/2011 18:22

age 12 bedtime between 8.30 and 9pm

RuthChan · 16/09/2011 18:37

DD 4, nearly 5
DS 2, nearly 3
Both go to bed at 7:00.
Although they both go to school, there's no difference between school days and weekends here yet.

RainboweBrite · 16/09/2011 18:42

My DS is 9 at the end of the month and he is a natural night owl. However, we aim for 8.30 p.m. on a school night, although it sometimes drifts towards 9. He usually wakes just before 8 a.m., although we sometimes have to wake him just after then. At weekends and holidays, he goes any time between 8.45 and 10 p.m., depending on how tired he is.

muminlondon · 16/09/2011 18:45

Really interesting to see the links giving average sleep for different ages. The BBC has just posted an article saying primary school kids need 9 hours' sleep. DD (8) has been pushing bedtime for a while now - about 8.30 pm and often reading until 9.30pm. But that's still at least 10 hours.

Tidypidy · 16/09/2011 18:55

My 2 in bed by 7, usually asleep by half 7, dd is 4, ds is 2.

JustAnother · 16/09/2011 19:03

DS (8): school nights at 8:00 and weekends at about 8:30. We have to wake him up at 7 during the week.
However, if you hear him bragging to his friends, you'd think he goes to bed at midnight

TalkinPeace2 · 16/09/2011 19:07

DD 13 Upstairs at 9, lights off by 10 - every day
DS 11 Upstairs by 8.30 lights off by 9.30 - every day
weekday alarm 7.10, weekend/holiday up at 8.30

and there are NO TV's, computers or electronic games in bedrooms.
I've even been known to put phones and ipods on charge in the kitchen overnight when I thought that was being a problem

as they get older the upstairs time will shift but not by much - DH and I like our evening time - but lights out will become their decision

a friend had a brilliant system when his kids hit university age - they all had bedroom TVs and computers - but HIS bedroom TV was linked to the aerial and router - he could see what they were watching or doing
he never bothered but the fact that he could acted as a self limiter
