What time does your child go to sleep on a school night?

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 13/09/2011 21:30

My son is 9 and apparently the only one in his class who goes to sleep before 10pm on a school night. On weekends 'everybody else' stays up until midnight. Hmm

In an ideal world I would like to see him in bed by 8pm on a school night. He takes ages to drop off to sleep (I mean when you tell him he can read for half an hour in bed and forget to go up to turn off his light he's still reading when you go upstairs to go to the loo at 10pm Blush.)Most nights its usually lights off by 8.30pm.

My 6 year old is in bed by 8pm on a good night. Quite often it's 8.15-8.30 as I find it hard juggling the two bed times and he keeps getting out of bed and I basically need to get more organised. Ideally I would like to see him in bed by 7.30.

Could we have a school night bedtime roll call?

Just put your child's age and bedtime.

I want to show my 9 year old this thread so he can believe me that the ones who say they go to bed at 10pm are probably not telling the truth........

9yo - starts getting ready 7:30, asleep between 8 and 8:30

6yo - starts getting ready 7pm, asleep between 7:30 and 8pm

Both get up about 7am.

The 9yo has normally read about 20 pages of a book by then. I think she reads when she wakes up, but sometimes the frantic rustling of pages when we go up to bed tells a different story.

Ds (7) in bed by 8pm (recent concession, was 7pm pre-holidays).

Dd1 (5) & dd2 (3) both in bed, shattered, by 7 & asleep in minutes most nights.

I'm hoist by my own petard a bit because, as a flashlight bookworm as a kid, I vowed 'I will never stop my kids from reading in bed!'. Ds often reads until late (10ish) - but will make up for it by zonking out quickly next night.

They're all up by 7am at the latest.

Mine are 5, 7 and 9 but all go to bed at the same time as sharing a room at the moment and difficult to juggle two bedtimes. At the moment they go to bed between 8 and 8.30. Ds (9) wakes up very early so must need less sleep. Dd1 and 2 sleep longer and dd2 (5) especially, sometimes has to be woken up to get ready for school (at about 7.30/8.00am). Ideally I would like to move ds back to his own room where he could go to bed at about 8.30pm, and put dds to bed earlier - say about 7.45. However dd1 still finding it hard to go to sleep early because of summer timetable not having worn off.
Anyway, all this makes for way too complicated reading - sorry Grin.

4 year old - 8pm
7 year old - 9pm
9 year old - 9pm
this is on weekdays, on weekends they might stay up fifteen minutes or so longer. some of their friends do stay up later on weekends though but they then sleep in late the following day, which mine would never ever do

bonkers20 · 13/09/2011 22:44

DS1 (12) is asleep around 9pm
DS2 (2) is asleep around 8.30pm (he has 1 1/2 hr nap in the day aswell)

sleepwouldbenice · 13/09/2011 22:51

I think its not just about bedtime but about how much sleep they get - I hate my children getting grumpy so if they do then they go to bed earlier the next night

DD1 is 8, goes to bed about 8.30, asleep about 9, gets up 7.30 to 8 so gets about 10.5 to 11 hours sleep

DD2 is 4, goes to bed at 8, asleep by 8.30 usually and gets up at 8 - so 11.5 hours sleep. Keeping an eye on this as just started reception

Allowed to stay up about another half an hour at weekends, depending what we have going on

angelinterceptor · 13/09/2011 22:52

DS nearly 12. In bed some time after 9pm but reads or watching TV until 10 ish. Up at 6:30 am

DD in bed from 8:30 but reading until 10 ish. Can't sleep and can't seem to turn off or relax. Up at 7:15

oneofthosedays · 13/09/2011 22:58

DD (7.5) and DS (4) both go between 7.30-8pm - DS gets to play his ds or read for 10 mins and DD gets a bit longer. They both have to get up at 7am. They will lie in or amuse themselves on a weekend so they go to bed about half hour later fri/sat nights.

Olympias · 14/09/2011 00:18

DS - 6.5. Asleep by 10pm, up at 8am both weekdays and weekends.
DH still shudders at the memories of being sent to bed early and lying awake and bored for hours. So swore never inflict that on his children.

Avinalarf · 14/09/2011 00:20

My 6 yr old goes to bed between 7-7.30pm. I would say 9pm is reasonable for a child of 9 yrs old. 10 is far too late, imo.

applecrumbleandcream · 14/09/2011 00:23

dd (4) usually has cracker and cheese for supper whilst watching the Chuckle Brothers dvd then up to bed dead on 7 pm, toilet, teeth and wash 10 mins and quick story/song, so usually about 7.15 pm.

choirmum · 14/09/2011 00:31

Just to add a slightly different perpective, my DC are choristers and board at school most of the week. School routine is:-
DS 12. Upstairs 9 and lights out at 9.15 (15 mins later in the summer term)
DD 9. 15 Upstairs 8.45 and light out at 9.
We stick to the same sort of times when they're at home, perhaps 30mins later for DS.

koalalou · 14/09/2011 00:36

telly off at 7pm (after half hour at end of day). upstairs, draw/play quietly, get changed, brush teeth etc then in bed reading at 7.30pm-ish.

DD2(7) reads to me, then I read to her, then lights out - usually 8.15 pm or so. usually she falls asleep fairly quickly.

DD1(9) reads in bed until around 8.30pm then lights out, but it is a real struggle for her as she wants to carry on reading but would read all night. Plus she struggles to get up in the morning at 7.30am when we start our day, otherwise I would probably let her read a little later.

I try to get them to bed no later than an hour later at the weekend but DD1 is begging to be allowed to watch 'The One Show' on a Saturday (whatever that is) - not likely to happen any time soon...

MindyMacready · 14/09/2011 00:43

DD1 11, lights out at 9pm ish up at 7:00am
DD2 14, lights out 10-10:30 ish, up at 6:15am

They catch different buses to school at different times. This is a new routine for both of them as they have both started new schools this term.

shavmcv · 14/09/2011 00:53

Dd is 6 :

Bath at 7
Bed for 7.30
Either book from 7.30 til 8 then DVD til 8.30
Or
DVD from 7.30 til 8.30
Lights out at 8.30

dizzyday07 · 14/09/2011 01:18

DD (7 on Sat) goes up at @8pm but can normally still be heard chattering to herself at 9pm!

Goes up between 8.30 and 9pm on Friday & Saturday.

Always up by 7.30am

crazygracieuk · 14/09/2011 07:44

Ds (10) and Dd (8) bed at 8pm weekdays, 9pm if good at weekends

Most of their friends have a similar bedtime. The ones who say midnight etc are almost always saying that to show off.

Hulababy · 14/09/2011 07:54

Dd is 9y and in y5.

Weekdays she goes up to bed between 8 and 9 depending on evening activities and what time she gets in. She sometimes reads but normally she settled down to sleep around 9pm. She gets up around 7am. 10 hours sleep is about right for her these days. Weekends is far more flexible again and can be later depending on what we are doing, but if she goes to bed later she will get up later too.

Runoutofideas · 14/09/2011 07:55

DDs aged 6 and 4 - in bed at 7 asleep by half past - except at weekends when they stay up til about 9pm.

mankyscotslass · 14/09/2011 07:59

DS9 - upstairs at 8.30, reads til lights out 9pm

DD7 - upstairs at 7.15, readls til about 7.45-8pm

DS5 - upstairs at 7, reads til 7.30

privateprancer · 14/09/2011 09:47

DD4 and DD2 - in bed by 7-7.15. DD4 asleep within 5 minutes, DD2 asleep by 8pm latest.

DD4 wakes up about 7.30, DD2 wakes up at 6-6.30 without fail.

sugartongue · 14/09/2011 11:43

2 x DS aged 4 and 7. Both in bed between 7.30pm and 8pm. Asleep by about 8.30 - 8.45pm. Both awake 6.45am-7am. To be honest this is too late for the 4 yr old, but impossible to get him to bed if 7 yr old isn't going too!

sugartongue · 14/09/2011 11:44

oh, and 7yr old is all but 8.

bigTillyMint · 14/09/2011 11:50

DS is 10 and lights out is at 8.30
DD is 12 and lights out is at 9.45

Of course, they can tell their friends that they go to bed at 10.30 and I won't let on Wink

bigTillyMint · 14/09/2011 11:51

OOps, that should be DD lights out at 8.45!
