What time does your child go to sleep on a school night?

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 13/09/2011 21:30

My son is 9 and apparently the only one in his class who goes to sleep before 10pm on a school night. On weekends 'everybody else' stays up until midnight. Hmm

In an ideal world I would like to see him in bed by 8pm on a school night. He takes ages to drop off to sleep (I mean when you tell him he can read for half an hour in bed and forget to go up to turn off his light he's still reading when you go upstairs to go to the loo at 10pm Blush.)Most nights its usually lights off by 8.30pm.

My 6 year old is in bed by 8pm on a good night. Quite often it's 8.15-8.30 as I find it hard juggling the two bed times and he keeps getting out of bed and I basically need to get more organised. Ideally I would like to see him in bed by 7.30.

Could we have a school night bedtime roll call?

Just put your child's age and bedtime.

I want to show my 9 year old this thread so he can believe me that the ones who say they go to bed at 10pm are probably not telling the truth........

DS is 5 in bed by 6.30pm - faffs and goes to the toilet about 20 times before settling down normally asleep by 7.15pm ALWAYS up at 7am precisely! No idea why he's so particular Grin

On the odd occasion we allow him to stay up he still takes an 3/4 an hour to settle and is up at 7am still.

Animol · 16/09/2011 19:30

In the mornings do they jump out of bed with a smile on their face or do you have to drag them out groaning - if the former they're getting enough sleep if the latter then they need to go to bed earlier :)

whoknowswho · 16/09/2011 19:40

DD - just 6 years - up at half 7 lights out 8.
DS - almost 12 years - in bed by half 8 and lights out by 9.

But apparently everybody in DS's primary school class last year went to bed after ten, were allowed to play call of duty (and others) on xbox live and were on facebook too.

MrsGWay · 16/09/2011 19:58

2yr & 5yr - try to get them to sleep by 9pm. Both get up at 8am and don't usually need naps during the day. If they do nap then they are awake until 11pm!

tjacksonpfc · 16/09/2011 20:03

Mines a bit awkward because of after school activities. they both go to bed at the same time ddis 7 ds is 6 next month.

Monday- taekwondo bed at 8-8.15
tuesday 7pm
weds 7pm
thursday taekwondo 8-8.15
friday football bed at 7.30
weekend 7-7.30

They need early bed times to recover from all the sport they do.

naughtymummy · 16/09/2011 20:04

ds 7 in bed 815 lights out 9pm
Dd nearly 5 in bed 730 lights out 815
(often asleep before)
No screens here after supper (6-630).
Bath at 7.

maxpower · 16/09/2011 20:04

DD 5 - bed 6.30pm, lights out at 7pm (we have to get her into bed early because she wakes any time from 5am onwards irrespective of what time she's up to)

this will become later when I go back to work next year (on mat leave at mo) because I don't get in until 6pm at the earliest

orienteerer · 16/09/2011 20:09

DS 9 is in bed at 8pm, lights out at 8.30pm.
Should add this is 30 mins longer than last school year simply because his school day has extended by one hour.

BsshBossh · 16/09/2011 20:14

I'm with Animol, if I'm regularly having to wake DD up in the morning from a deep sleep then she needs to go to bed earlier.

lookingforwork · 16/09/2011 20:20

DD1 5.5 try for 7 but anytime from 7-7.30 . She doesnt always go to sleep but has toys and books close in her room.

DD2 2.5 around 6-630 she still naps from 12-2 but will get up around 6 and play in her room.

Maybe putting them to bed later as I start work on monday

eandemum · 16/09/2011 20:20

DS 13 lights out 9.30pm unless football on TV and then only if it is 'his'
team or a good match!!

DD 5 7.30pm

eandemum · 16/09/2011 20:22

Is this child called Everybody Else the same one who has a blackberry?

JustAnother · 16/09/2011 20:23

I think that after a certain age, it becomes more difficult to go to be earlier because of the activities. For example, Cubs finishes at 8:30 for us, so on Thursdays he goes to be at 9 pm. Mondays and Wednesdays, he has Spanish school until 6, and we don't get home till 7. Then he has to have dinner, do home work and finally gets to bed exhausted at about 8:30. On the other days, school doesn't finish till 5:30. so it is still not easy to pack everything in. Sometimes it is just imposible to do things any quicker, so I hope DS gets used to catching up sleep at the weekend.

girliefriend · 16/09/2011 20:23

dd 5yo in bed for 7pm and asleep by half past. Sometimes will let her stay up half hr later on the wend if she is behaving herself!!!

sphil · 16/09/2011 20:25

Ds1 (10) bed 8.30, lights out 9 on school nights.
Weekends bed 9, lights out 9.30
He used to take ages to get to sleep when he had a much earlier bedtime and this suits him much better. He is always up early, horribly bright and bouncy!

Ds2 (8) goes to bed about 8 but can run around his bedroom for hours. But he is autistic, so things are a bit different.

TalkinPeace2 · 16/09/2011 20:32

Oh yes, blackberry, call of duty, FB account that Mummy cannot log into
all the bravado junk
we had our own versions when we were young

Erebus · 16/09/2011 20:44

Oh, how passe- everyone else has an iPhone, mummy. At 10.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 16/09/2011 20:52

Both DS1 (4) and 2 (3) in bed by 7, tucked up, lights out. Both wake around 6 and are up around 6.30.

DH works evenings though so I'd go mad if they were up any later.

maypole1 · 16/09/2011 21:10

My dd is 11 bed time was 7 is now 7:30 he loves his sleep and is a nightmare if he not in bed at this time and to be fair he is finding the extra half hour a bit much and went up at 7.10 tonight

MuddlingMackem · 16/09/2011 21:57

Bedtime here is between 7:00 and 7:30 on a school night. Lights out at 8:00 for 5 year old DD and 8:30 for 7 year old DS, although DS is an incorrigible bookworm and frequently puts his light back on. Unfortunately he seems by nature to be a night owl and there's just nothing we can do about it. Grr!

They do get to stay up later on weekends and school holidays though.

ByTheSea · 16/09/2011 22:02

DD2-9 goes to bed at 9.30 on a school night. She is allowed to read. She get's up between 7.00 and 7.30 am. DH and I aren't home before at least 6.30 so we wouldn't get much time with her if she wasn't up that late. She's used to it and it's not a problem.

vividgingerchilli · 16/09/2011 22:10

DS (6) goes to bed at 7pm and is asleep within 10 minutes. DD (12) goes to bed when she feels like it, but if I suggest she goes to bed then she listens. Usually she chooses to go at 9pm on a school night.

vividgingerchilli · 16/09/2011 22:11

eandemum - yes, that is the one. Though my DD (12) thinks that they are a waste of money for children to have a blackberry so there is hope yet!

muddyangels123 · 16/09/2011 22:23

DS2(14) - 10pm weekends - 11pm

DD(9) - 8.15pm weekends - 9pm

DD will go up to bed around 7.30 most nights ( other than Tue. due to Brownies), and watch a DVD/read/listen to an audio CD. Lights out at 8.15pm and DD is asleep within 10 mins.

BoosMaw · 16/09/2011 22:35

5 yo and 1.5 yo both go upstairs at approx 8pm, faffing starts then, tooth brushing, medications, stories etc. so lights out approx 8.30pm. 5yo will wake up somewhere between 7am and 7.30am, 1.5yo wakes up earlier, sometimes 6.15am ish, but he still naps in the day for perhaps 1.5h.
