What time does your child go to sleep on a school night?

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 13/09/2011 21:30

My son is 9 and apparently the only one in his class who goes to sleep before 10pm on a school night. On weekends 'everybody else' stays up until midnight. Hmm

In an ideal world I would like to see him in bed by 8pm on a school night. He takes ages to drop off to sleep (I mean when you tell him he can read for half an hour in bed and forget to go up to turn off his light he's still reading when you go upstairs to go to the loo at 10pm Blush.)Most nights its usually lights off by 8.30pm.

My 6 year old is in bed by 8pm on a good night. Quite often it's 8.15-8.30 as I find it hard juggling the two bed times and he keeps getting out of bed and I basically need to get more organised. Ideally I would like to see him in bed by 7.30.

Could we have a school night bedtime roll call?

Just put your child's age and bedtime.

I want to show my 9 year old this thread so he can believe me that the ones who say they go to bed at 10pm are probably not telling the truth........

dd is 6, bed at 8, asleep by 8.30 - 9 at a push if she is playing dens in her bunk beds.

ballstoit · 14/09/2011 12:01

DS (6) - 7.30
DD1 (4) - 7.00
DD2 (2) - 6.30.

They need their sleep and I need my time to myself (usually in bed myself by 9.30).

If it helps as well, DNephew 2&3 (7 & 4) go at 7. DNephew1 (9) goes at 8 and reads til half past.

Kids always lie about the time they go to bed, I know I did.

eandh · 14/09/2011 12:01

DD1 7 (well 7 last week!) in bed at 7.30pm lights out by 8pm
DD2 (4) bed at 6.45pm asleep by 7pm (just started school and knackered!)

whenIgetto3 · 14/09/2011 12:04

DD (10) bed 8:30 lights out 8:45
DS (8) bed 8:15 lights out 8:30
DS (7) bed 8:00 lights out 8:15
DD (4) bed 7:00 bedtime story read by DH or myself (5 mins) lights out usually asleep by 7:15

Same routine school night or non school night unless actually away on holiday in which case may be slightly later for DD(4)

munstersmum · 14/09/2011 12:04

DS 7 upstairs 7.30 lights out 8.

Insomnia11 · 14/09/2011 12:05

DD1 6 9pm 8pm
DD2 2 8.30pm 7.30pm

StuckUpTheFarawayTree · 14/09/2011 12:06

DD - in bed by 7.30, asleep usually within 10-15 mins.

She needs her sleep, if she's over halfan hour late for bed, she's a grumpy Sid the next day.

Normally up by 6.45am/7.00am

marge2 · 14/09/2011 12:06

Both DS1 (8) and DS2 (6) go to bed at the same time and are both lights out by 8pm. DS1 drops off immediately. DS2 warbles on to himslef ( we can hear him down the listener) till 9ish sometimes. Both need to be up at 7:30 on school mornings. Had to wake them both, this morning, but that is unusual - they normally wake up by 7:00.

DS1 would be beggared at school next day if he goes to sleep much later than this. He IS very active though. DS2 is a bit more of a couch potato.

RunningAllDay · 14/09/2011 12:12

DD1 (7) - 7.30 to 7.45pm in bed, read til 8pm. Finds it hard to go to sleep.
DD2 (5) - 7.30 to 7.45pm in bed, asleep immediately

Up again at 6.30 to 6.45am (probably needs to be factored in?)

*so pleased you're doing this thread, also wanted to know. Will you graph and post the results? :o

MRSJWRTWR · 14/09/2011 12:34

DS1 12yrs upstairs at 8.30pm and lights out by 9pm (have to wake up at 7am).

DS2 5yrs upstairs for bath at 6.30pm and lights off by 7.30pm after stories, songs etc. (bounces out of bed by 6am).

DS1 is allowed to stay up later, until 9.30-10ish on Fri and Sat.

heymammy · 14/09/2011 12:51

DD1 8 (P4) in bed before 8 and lights out 8.15 however if she wants a "really big read" then she is free to go to bed earlier. Brownies on Wed means she doesn't get home until 8.40ish but then she knows it's straight to bed and lights out!

DD2 5 (P1) in bed 7ish gets a couple of stories and a wee read by herself so lights out prob 7.20 and asleep within minutes Smile

Ds 11 y.o. (Yr7) - bed 20:30 lights out 21:00 often will take himself up to bed if tired so can be asleep by 20:00. Gets up at 07:00

Dd 9 y.o. (Yr4) - bed 20:00 lights out 20:30 would stay up later if could. Gets up 07:30 but sometimes will need to be woken up other times up at 06:00

I would have said it depended on the child, but there are averages for different ages.
Here is a guide on babycentre for older children's sleep requirements.
My DS is almost 7 and, regardless of bed-time reads or sings or something until he falls asleep at around 9:30 and is back up at 7:45. So he seems to need around 10.
The bedtimes of the other children in his class vary widely, it depends on when the rest of their family needs to be up, when their parents finish work and any after school activities. Some classes don't start until 7pm so not much chance of those children being in bed by 8pm.
One boy in ds's nursery class was still having an afternoon nap when he was 4, which was quite uncommon amongst his peers, but suited him obviously.
Another friend puts her 6 year old to bed at 7:30 and she is back up at 6am the next morning, which suits the family (not for me though Shock)

voddiekeepsmesane · 14/09/2011 14:05

DS 7 in bed between 7:30 and 8 he reads for a bit then has an audio book to fall asleep to. Usually asleep by 9. Up in the morning between 7 and 7:30 never ever have to wake him.

ragged · 14/09/2011 14:13

11 & 9yo: don't think they fall asleep before 10pm (sorry!) Bit of a sore issue, but I have to go to bed before them so hard for me to change. Up at 7-7:15am.

7yo: lights out 8:30-9pm, needs 20-50min. to fall asleep after that. Up bouncing off of walls before 7am almost every morning.

racingheart · 14/09/2011 14:43

DT 9 go to bed at 9pm and are asleep by 9.30-10pm. I'd prefer it to be earlier but they have never needed much sleep, and at least the later bedtimes mean we're not woken at 5.00 am every morning.Even if they don't nod off until 10pm they're up and breezy at 6.45. There's no stopping them. When they go to uni I plan on sleeping for a year to catch up!

Elibean · 14/09/2011 16:20

dd1 (nearly 8) is in bed at 8.30, but often doesn't sleep till 10. She can't, have tried everything. She is up at 7.30 on weekdays, but will lie in at weekends. I wish she could sleep earlier...she is often tired, but can't switch off easily.

dd2 (nearly 5) sleeps at 8ish, give or take half an hour, and is up at 7.30. I nearly never have to wake her up. She is a human dynamo.

jamdonut · 14/09/2011 19:23

DS2 age 11 ...bed at 9.00 lights out 10.00...10.30 weekends
DD age 14...bed at 0930 - 10.00 lights out 10.30,11.00 at weekends

Jobless DS1 age 19....any time he damn well pleases!! Angry Wink

Thereyougo · 14/09/2011 19:30

DD (15) bed 10, lights out 10.30
DS (6) bed 9, lights out 9.30

No difference between weekends/weekdays at night

Mornings weekdays both up at 7am, Saturdays both up at 6am, Sunday rarely see either before lunch.

chocolateshoes · 14/09/2011 19:39

DS is 6 and we go up to bed around 6.45 and lights are out around 7pm. He often doesn't actually fall asleep until nearer 8pm but I feel it gives him time to wind down. At weekends he often stays up til at least 9pm.

tassisssss · 14/09/2011 19:41

Ds is 8, goes to bed anytime between 7pm and 8pm, often not asleep until nearer 9.

Mousey84 · 14/09/2011 19:59

DD is 8, in bed between 9 -9.30, lights out at 10, but often still awake after 11. Gets up at 7.30-7.45. Weekends, bed about 10, lights out at 10.30ish.
