What the fuck are Theriens?

My youngest DD (10) has taken a liking to jumping like an animal in the garden, drawing foxes, and wants me to buy her a mask and tail for her 11th birthday. She claims she's a "Therien" and feels like an animal. Apparently a few kids her age have gotten into it.

Has anyone ever watched the episode of South Park where Kyle's dad becomes a lawfin? (A lawyer dolphin)

Sandyankles · 26/07/2024 10:02

I don’t think anyone here ‘hates’ people who think they are animals. We are just very concerned that delusional beliefs and / or mental illness is being encouraged rather than treated / addressed.
And if it isn’t a mental illness then it’s a just a rather irritating childlike role play or attention seeking behaviour or a need to feel special/ different that adults should grow out of - and thus worthy of ridicule, but not hatred.
Challenging or laughing about delusions is not hatred. We should do more of it imo.

Sandyankles · 26/07/2024 10:03

Kids at my dcs schools think they are wolves - everyone else finds it very irritating, they are always kids with multiple other problems.

@Dressinggowntime Why on EARTH** are you allowing your 10 year old child onto TikTok ffs????

Can you read? She doesn’t have TikTok. Never had TikTok. I was just listing the places you find discussion of it. Dd came across the concept on Roblox. It gets past the age restrictions.

@Wysteria123
Do you believe that "reverse Therians" exist?
Maybe my cat is a Therian and identifies as a human.

Your cat probably identifies as supreme dictator of the planet for life, like most cats do.

Creepyhusband59 · 26/07/2024 10:07

No idea but good luck

ViciousCurrentBun · 26/07/2024 10:09

@formerdragon thanks for an insightful post, people are too scared to be Aunt Gertrude these days.

A friend's child told me that at school all the kids that say I am now XY or Z or go on about furries, gender, being pansexual or anything deemed straying from being just very plain old vanilla are always the boring kids.

Anime is often dodgy, there is straight up hentai but also sexualised child looking characters, but it’s ok because really she is 1000 years old. Aunt Gertrude would have seen through that twaddle. All of this is driven by fetish.

Creepyhusband59 · 26/07/2024 10:14

Im sorry but when my daughter came home from
school and told me she had furries at her school I was beyond confused and when the school sent out an email wanting litter boxes in the bathroom I became utterly confused and questioned the school . For any human being thinking they are an animal and attend public schools , well you better have your rabies vaccine and flea collar on and on a leash and you should only be at school on show and tell day otherwise you should be in obedience school at petsmart and I feel so sorry that your lacking something in your life where you need this bizarre attention .

Namechanged for this because it's slightly embarrassing but I have a perspective you might find interesting. I'm an autistic woman and when I was growing up I was interested in make-believe and imaginative play for a lot longer than most people. I didn't really grow out of it. This was pre-internet and I loved playing pretend games with younger siblings.

When I got to about 12, I was having a truly horrendous time - socialising becoming more complicated and me failing to grasp it, puberty, family issues. I developed an intense interest in some of my imaginative play ideas, including mythical creatures. I started saying I was one of these creatures, and if someone said that I wasn't, I'd either ignore them or contradict them. Let's say dragons.

It got to the point where I was being told 'you're not allowed to mention dragons at Aunt Gertrude's house' which as an autistic girl I thought was horrendously rude and unfair since Aunt Gertrude had topics of conversation I didn't like much but I knew you couldn't just forbid people from mentioning things. In hindsight I think my parents were a bit embarrassed about it. I was oblivious and had no idea how weird it came across. Very emotionally immature, probably.

Mentioning dragons to Aunt Gertrude was actually a very good thing for me to do because she let me know that she was concerned about me and asked me if I really thought I was a dragon. Seriously, not laughing or mocking or getting angry over it. So I said no. No, of course I knew I wasn't. The whole thing was a big game that I probably withdrew into because of how hard I was finding everything else in life, and saying I was really a dragon was refusing to 'break character'. She talked to me about how there are times it's fine to play games like that but it worries people if you do it all the time. Really got through to me.

I don't think I ever really grew out of wanting to play make-believe but now I channel it by writing fiction and don't go about pretending to be anything. I'm aware of what's socially appropriate! At 12 I didn't know, or didn't care until I saw that it had made someone I cared about feel worried (my parents getting angry about it made me more determined to insist I was a dragon, because it became a power struggle).

I'm very glad the modern internet wasn't around then. If I'd had adults telling me I really was a dragon in a human's body and that's why I felt that way, I could have ended up genuinely drifting away from reality instead of just playing a game. My mental health was already bad and that would have made it worse.

We need more aunt Gertrudes in this world

'What function do you think these behaviours and beliefs are serving for you?' is always an interesting question.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/07/2024 10:31

Scarlet Blake 'identified' as a cat and had a microchip fitted.

[content warning for anyone googling that name btw]

Yes, that seems as far as "Scarlett"'s affinity with cats went.

Bonbon21 · 26/07/2024 10:34

If I can return to the point of the original post... maybe emphasis all those animals cant eat pizza, chocolate, curry etc... imagine a world like that!!😭😭😭😭
You sound very sensible... this too will pass!

Personally (based on my own experience of a therian niece) be concerned. She was older when she started but fully believes she has an animal spirit inside her. She will be changing her name to therian name by deed poll and her entire personality is now her animal spirit. We have essentially lost our old niece, she has no therian friends in real life, her entire day is spent making content for social media and talking to her online "therian" friends. Some of which are men in their mid 30's. (She's just just turned 18). Her real life social group are a mixture of self diagnosed autistics and non-binary types with blue/pink hair.

So yeah from my experience be concerned. There are a lot of adults in the online therian community and it's another area of the internet where child grooming is hidden in a "wholesome hobby" type way.

Ok so...

Intrigued, I went on a short internet YT trip to satisfy my curiosity.

And yeah. I see echoes of the social transing of children along with odf behaviour including running along public spaces on arms and legs.

In just a few minutes, I saw comments like: My parents don't accept the 'real' me and don't understand me, but so glad I found my animal community'. 'I just want to go into the Forest and disappear from life' 'There's so many of us out here to support you' etc etc

The former I don't know what to make of. The latter is concerning as it echoes dialog one hears on forums which seek to isolate children mentally from mainstream society and their families.

Teenagers I know tell me Roblox is a favourite hang out for creepy older men.

See comments above about creating communities of children who are unsupervised. All children are vulnerable by definition, of course, but some are extra vulnerable.

I wouldn't let my kids use Roblox.

She doesn’t have it anymore. I had it with the age restrictions on and chat switched off but she’d figured out the passcode and was switching the chat on and off so I couldn’t see that she was chatting online on it when I came to check. She told me in the end and luckily she’s been sensible enough to agree she’s not having the app at all now

@AccountCreateUsername I don't think that's how it works...I don't believe in evolution anyway.

Like gravity, evolution doesn't need you to believe in it.

Your grasp of scientific method is shaky, but I guess it's difficult with paws ...

WiddlinDiddlin · 26/07/2024 12:52

Back to the real world...

@Yappucino Lots of kids like to play fantasy make believe - I was a pony for half my childhood, at certain moments, in the school yard or... and I think tellingly... in moments when I needed to escape, hard, from the real world.

But I didn't really think I was a pony. Or occasionally a cat. I just thought life looked a lot more fun and a lot less hard work and scary, if I were one of those animals and not me. Recognised for what it is and not fed (and theres a variety of ways to do that, access to TikTok etc is just one) it'll pass.

It's escapism and the human need to believe in something mystical/other/higher... which is why so many people follow a religion of course.

On a normal level we read stories or watch stories on tv or listen to them via audio books - going up the scale a bit we might write stories or create our own little worlds in other ways (miniature modeling, painting, sculpting)... go further and theres LARP, being an actor...

And I think we have to ask ourselves... how have we got to the point where people want to escape as hard as they do today and in such great numbers, from such a young age? I think thats a significant part of the problem.

@Wysteria123 you are literally exhibiting the symptoms of psychosis. so yes therapy is not right for you. you need psychiatric input

fashionqueen0123 · 26/07/2024 13:30

If someone actually thinks they are an animal they clearly need help especially if they are exhibiting symptoms like hallucinations and psychosis. If they are playing in some kind of bizarre adult play then please don’t encourage children online.
In the real world no one is going to take seriously or hire an animal for a job for example. I do worry for children growing up what will happen once they hit adult hood.

"When everyone is super. Noone will be" The Incredibles.
I think people are just running out of ideas to make themselves "special". It's very sad, we've got men pretending to be women and adults pretending to be animals . Something has gone seriously wrong. I always say a short stint volunteering in a famine-stricken or war-torn country might cure this crap but apparently that makes me right wing and I've voted left all my life.

I'm from a country with a great deal of poverty. funny how we never see children there who are confused about being human

sadly they are focused on surviving

there is a saying... those who don't have problems, create them

I have just had an amazing realisation. all oppressive dictators were probably cat therians. that's the only thing that explains the despotic behaviour of eg. chengiz khan, not to mention their love of shiny objects

Did she ponce/pounce around the garden on all fours and refuse to answer to "Mum" ?

Not that we saw, maybe after we had gone to bed.. 😝
