Has anyone heard of this term?
it’s supposedly a reference to identifying as an animal or enjoy dressing and acting like one according to my almost 12 year old.
Well she is suddenly into this phase after watching videos on tik tok and I’m quite concerned about the obsession she now has over it.
for the past 3 months she spends the majority of her days making animal costumes to wear around the house while making the sounds of the animal. Each week will be a different animal. Admittedly at times I have snapped and told her to stop being silly. I guess I’m concerned she will be bullied for it as she begins secondary school next week.
her primary school queried if she may be autistic before this phase appeared, but I had no support from anyone and my gp wouldn’t refer as in their words it would take until adulthood to diagnosis! I do wonder if there is a connection.
ive Never heard of this before or where to even begin working out what to do. She keeps it secret at home, doesn’t do it in public and hides it from extended family by choice.
do I let her carry on and hope it fades out eventually? My husband thinks it could be the start of a mental health issue but I don’t want to assume this at a young age.
any advice would be appreciated.

Wow. ok, this is getting spicy. I am a 16 year old strait girl therian so I have some insight.

Yes the therian community has red flags however this is with some reason
I have been a therian for 3 years my parents have never supported it they forbid me from talking about it and making or buying gear which hurts to know that they are ashamed of me don't try to understand how I feel
so there is some reason behind these claims look at this tread most people here are not open to listening or accepting their child's therian identity

Therians and fury's are NOT sexual or at least thy are not meant to be being a fury is a HOBBY fury's are pretty just cosplayers and are different from therians

Being a therian can take a toll on mental health it can isolate a therian therians thrive off of nature and not being around that can also lead to depression and stress for a therian its like being away from you home town a fish out of water if you will

PARNETS BEING A THERIAN CAN ATTRACT PREDATORS
I don't know why I don't really understand people but this is incredibly dangerous I have been in a few situations like this online and in person
the best way to avoid this is to keep an eye on you kids online activity and to NOT allow your child to go public gearing on their own

Being a therian can inspire creativity and helps you child explore their identity if its a phase that's ok they'll learn from it and grow quads can be a bit strange but its just a sport and its good for your body

Be very careful what you say about your child's therian Identity even if you don't believe in it or if this is a phase this is your child's current identity

gear is not needed to be a therian nor do you have to do quads

I hope that helped :D

Look I'm going to try and help here from my personal experience as I am therian myself and for me it honestly wasn't from social media full stop, being therian isn't a choice, it's not as bad as social media makes it out to be, I still don't know my theriotype, if it was a choice then I could choose what I wanted to be but no I'm still working it out, it's different what each therian experiences so I can't speak for everyone but I can speak for myself, I know I definitely have the soul of a member of the Felidae family but I am still working it out from my experiences, I do have mental shifts which are normal for a therian just like phantom shifts are, and I do experience them as well, I've never been a harm to anyone and no it's not a coping mechanism either because there are quite a lot of things that therians can experience that are unpleasant for them of the back of it, there are obviously some people who think they are when they are not or there are some people who think it's a choice ect... when it's not, there are sexual connotations to the furry community I get that but I looked once at how common that is and it's less the 1% of the furry community the only reason why people know about this though is because this is the only thing that gets broadcast, the happier side and that's the majority doesn't get heard about which leaves the stereotypes being the only thing to listen to, but also with the therian community this is definitely not the case because being therian is our personality, it's who we truly are inside whereas with the furry community anyone can be part of it technically for any reason if they fit the criteria which if you look at the minimum requirements for calling someone a furry, it's not a big criteria at all, it's hard to mislabel yourself as a therian if you know what one is but it's navigating the stereotypes, but being therian is not a sexual fetish, it's just who we are and for me I know it's not going to change, if it does change and they don't see themselves as one later then it means they were just exploring their identity and it means they weren't a therian in the first place, i think and I'm not saying everyone on TikTock or YouTube who is therian does this but a lot of them are either trying to spread an understanding in their own way or are giving advice to other therians on how to cope if things go wrong and sometimes what they say is wrong and I completely understand that, I don't agree with the YouTube and TikTock therians most of the time and I discovered I was one on my own merit without the internet because I started paying a bit more true attention to myself and I realised actually what I was going through and what I was experiencing and I knew that my soul wasn't human fully so I knew that it was something else, that's when I decided to look, it wasn't something I started believing just after I found the term it was the whole build up that had me looking for the term, I know this is very very long but I hope this helps a bit

Hey, Therian here
Therianthropy is where someone identifies as a non-human level on any level (Spiritual, Psychological, Physical, etc)
I have seen many children like yours online saying they're therians, but they aren't. However, I would suggest to let her be creative. Also, that other person who said that being a furry is a fetish is wrong. As a furry myself, allow me to explain. Furries are people who share an interest in anthropomorphic creatures (ex. Mickey Mouse, Simba, etc). Some make costumes called fursuits. All furries have their own character, or characters, called fursonas, that they make these suits of. While yes, there is a not so child friendly side of the fandom, the main part of the fandom is child friendly. Furries are also mostly LGBTQ, though there are non LGBTQ furries.

it is not a mental illness, it is not by choice, and it is def not by force. being a therian means that you are spiritually connected with your animal and you were that animal in your past life. my daughter is one and she does what she wants with it. she sat me down one day and told me everything about it because I was a little confused. if you are concerned you don't have to be. just ask your child to explain it ;) -happy to help

Do you understand how crazy you sound? You are a human, sorry we are not the best species in the world but thats what you were born as , not a panda or a lion or you wouldn't be able to type. Sheesh!

Goodness. I don't think you could have fit anymore "I's" in that paragraph if you tried. And you think theriotype is a word? oh dear. So you think you are a cat, btw its TikTok . Good try though. 5 out of 10
