Stocktake Time - Brexit Countdown

Can't believe we might actually have a No Deal crash.

Anyone else finding it overwhelming doing usual Christmas stuff, the winter weather preparations and then Brexit and being ready for more coronavirus stuff?

I need to do a stock take of food and toiletries.

We've been life prepping so boiler has been serviced early, electrics have had an upgrade this year. Car getting serviced next month.

I can't be arsed.
I feel sick.

we had a Brexit stash and we are just cycling through it now and replacing what we use. I am making sure my child has clothes tucked away in a couple of sizes up. we've been getting my prescriptions a little earlier each month in case of supply line issues due to Brexit.

But yes, it sucks and is exhausting. I am trying just to concentrate on what I can control.

AldiIsla · 17/10/2020 11:05

Concentrating on what we can control is perfect.

Probably need more pet food. Going to make a 10 week plan.

arse need to get car serviced and moted. fuck.

AldiIsla · 17/10/2020 12:36

Oh bugger, feel like the bearer of bad news now, Susan. Better now than when they can't get car parts though.

Life prep: been trying to pay off smaller bills before the new year. Managed to get a much more secure job last month so huge relief after a very precarious few months. Christmas is pretty much sorted,m (food and gifts) or will be in the next two weeks. Just need to trawl the buying/selling sites and eBay to stock up on bigger clothes for DD.

I knew the fuckers would crash us out. Feel so angry.

Whenwillow · 17/10/2020 15:16

We've got a bit of a stash, and I'm spending this week booking appts for opticians/dentist if possible. Have got extra supplies of animal meds/flea stuff/feed.
Must get car tyres/tracking checked. Boiler been serviced anyway but good call.
I need to clean my water butt and the guttering that supplies it. We have torches and batteries of all sizes. Looking into stick on/battery powered lights too. There have been rumours of planned power cuts - don't know how true they are.
Need to give my pushbike the once over too, just in case I need it to get to work.
It came to me earlier that if we both got poorly, we need some easy/accessible food. Which means I should organise food cupboard and possibly invest in a microwave.
Aren't we lucky - covid/potential no deal combo.
I haven't been able to work out if there'll be supply issues if a crap deal is sorted, or only of there is no deal at all.
Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

Whenwillow · 17/10/2020 15:18

I agree about focusing on what we can control. I've stopped trying to have an opinion and just observe. It's much less stressful.

CoffeeNights · 17/10/2020 15:21

We have a good chunk sorted already. Going to inventory during the week for j3xts weeks delivery slot.
Need.to book dentist and boiler in.

CoffeeNights · 17/10/2020 15:22

Would also love to see your ten week plan!

lexloofah · 17/10/2020 19:22

Do you mean a plan for ten weeks worth of supplies to ride out the initial post 1 Jan bumpy period or ten-ish week countdown to 1 Jan?

Either way I am in, cannot believe they will no deal or shit deal during Covid.

AldiIsla · 17/10/2020 21:05

10 Weeks of preps.

I'm going to have a good look at what I want to get sorted and spread it out. What's that metaphor about eating an elephant?

I have a cracking stash (mostly thanks to the amazing threads here). I'm aiming for 4 months.

I'm drinking right now but will absolutely share my plan once I've done it.

My favourite prep though. Wright's cake mix. I have 12. They're all lush. Long dates. Go in the bread maker with oil and water and come out perfectly. We always have cake on a Sunday. I keep schooshy cream (it has long dates) in the fridge for it. I have 4 of them. Will add more though. I'm such a fat fuck, but I could eat turnips 3 meals a day if I had a nice cake on a Sunday to look forward too.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/10/2020 22:13

pringles, I have lots of pringles. though I ate half a tin today, oops.

I have lost nearly half a stone and 6 inches from my waist but today I was doing my best to put it back on.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/10/2020 22:15

apparently though, it will only be fifty p extra. oh the confidence of youth..

prompted by ex not having watched the news.

found out when i was speculating whether there would be enough food in teh shops to put in his freezer when it finally arrives.

EveLe · 17/10/2020 22:18

@AldiIsla Doesn't that take up loads of fridge space? I've stocked up on the President Squirty Cream - it doesn't need to be kept in the fridge, you just refrigerate 2 hours before use instead.

I need to have a check of my supplies - I originally prepped for Brexit, then over the summer started prepping more for a Covid winter, as we live on top of a mountain, and its always really difficult to get food deliveries, so I made sure I had enough food to survive 3-4 weeks of isolation without having to buy anything.

For Brexit I want to concentrate more on having plenty of the items we expect there to be shortages of, and I think these will be different to the shortages we experienced during the first lockdown.

So my priority for the next 10 weeks is to clear some freezer space to buy more frozen veg, and try to find somewhere that has tinned carrots and sweetcorn. Both seem to have been unavailable for weeks here.

Radiatornoise · 17/10/2020 22:27

I always suspected there would be power cuts. Am off to Mountain Warehouse to buy a camping stove. Must buy candles. MM

I had a wonderful Brexit stash but it had been depleted due to Covid.

What I have discovered is that my family eat lots of bread, peanut butter, teabags, hot chocolate powder and wine (for the grownups).

We definitely need a 3- month apocalypse buffer. This is so unfair on people who don’t have the storage options in their houses/flats.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 08:21

It does @EveLe but we use it for cakes and hot chocolate and I know we'd truely miss it. I'll see if I can get the President's one, that sounds great. Ty.

We're lucky for storage, the kitchen fits a fridge freezer, a chest freezer and a small freezer. We have stuff in the attic too. Treats like in the attic. I'm too chubby to climb up through the little hole. Grin

Whatatoodoodle · 18/10/2020 09:29

Is there a link to a decent list of what we are likely to need? We did have a reasonable stash of pasta and the like but used it all in the first few weeks of Covid.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 10:11

I was thinking along those lines but even if there's not a shortage of food item A surely food item B will be harder to get as everyone tries to get that instead?

I'm currently writing lists. Lockdown has taught me a lot about what's important to us as a family. I now have a stash of craft kits. Cake is as high on the list as bread and we eat over 50 Weetabix a week!!!

What kind of freezer/larder/pantry space do you have @whatatoodoodle and what family size are you prepping for?

I'm not prepping as if there's no food. If that actually happened there'd be civil unrest quite quickly. I'm prepping so we can have our usual, have a good diet while everything gets sorted with ports and lorries and if our work goes tits up there's a buffer.

OP posts:
Whenwillow · 18/10/2020 10:41

Totally agree with if you can't get A it'll be harder to get B. Likewise going to local butchers etc. If you can't get what you want at supermarket, there'll presumably be a run on farm shops so that's not an easy answer either.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 11:17

I hope I'll be able to prep well enough to just stay in and not be another body in the queues. I've prepped for my neighbor, she'd never prep but if she had two tins of beans and nothing else I know she'd give one away to someone in need. I've got a bag of dog food here for her dog too.

My job of the day is sorting out the medicine stash.

Checked dates.
Made a list of what we need.
Told DH if he doesn't stop taking things out but leaving the boxes in I'll put it on his job list Grin

DH is deep cleaning the kitchen cupboards today.

Whatatoodoodle · 18/10/2020 11:27

Family of 4. 2 adults, 2 school age children. 10 drawers of freezer space.
Plenty of room for packets and tins

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 11:56

I started small and basic then added as time went on.

I sorted breakfast in a one by buying a bag of krusteaz pancake mix from Amazon. Was £10 and it's versatile, just add water and my kids love pancakes. I also have porridge oats and dried fruit which my kids really like. You can make porridge in water on the hob and it's nice.

I have batch cooked dinners in my freezer, cook two lasagnes instead of one. One to eat one in the freezer. I do this twice a week. Great for days you just can't be bothered.

For packet stuff and tins I'd see what the kids like before buying more than one. My eldest likes fray bentos pies and super noodles. The others would rather starve.

I'm doing medicine and toiletries today. Paracetamol, ibrofen as a starter. Amazing how quick you can go through it if everyone is ill. As a woman get Cystocalm.

My advice would be to buy a little extra of your usual. Take advantage of 2 for 1 offers. Keep a list of what you have and rotate, rotate, rotate.

Don't panic, it won't be a no food at all for months situation, of if it is we'll have bigger problems. Prep to avoid queuing and make the situation a bit nicer.

Our treats are cake mix and popcorn. They store well. Treats are so important.

OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 18/10/2020 12:33

I am prepping all the stuff we normally eat. ( Lots of beans, pulses tinned tomatoes olives etc) plus the things we eat in emergency. ( Tinned carrots and curry when I am too ill to cook etc) plus just add hot water stuff for kids and me if I am really ill.

The idea is I will continue to shop for what is available and use my stores to fill in the gaps.

Also, plan to have different foods for different people so having no breakfast stuff in the shops is solved by making ds pasta, dd has soya milk, I have dried milk. During Covid I was eating couscous for breakfast to ensure ds got the little milk we could get hold of.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 12:44

Factoring in being too I'll to cook is really good thinking @BlackeyedSusan. I have some batch cooked dinners that can be done from frozen but some breakfast and lunch options would be a smart move. Ty.
