Stocktake Time - Brexit Countdown

AldiIsla · 17/10/2020 09:37

Can't believe we might actually have a No Deal crash.

Anyone else finding it overwhelming doing usual Christmas stuff, the winter weather preparations and then Brexit and being ready for more coronavirus stuff?

I need to do a stock take of food and toiletries.

We've been life prepping so boiler has been serviced early, electrics have had an upgrade this year. Car getting serviced next month.

I can't be arsed.
I feel sick.

10 Week Plan.

19/10 -Full stock take
26/10 -Defrost Small Freezer
2/11 -Draught proof and winter duvets on
9/11 -replace bathroom taps, reseal bath
16/11 -car service pray, to car gods
23/11 - big batch cook
30/11 - defrost fridge freezer
7/12 - buy booze for Christmas and January
14/12 - big treat ship for Christmas and January
21/12 - full fridge with cheese, butter and deli meats
28/12 - be too fat and drunk to care anymore

I've started my stock take and made lists in 8 catagories.

Medicine
Toiletries
Dry Good
Tins
Freezer
Fridge
Treats
Emergency

I'm going to try and tick a few things off each section every week. It's just filling gaps so no huge purchases needed. Stock take will stop me buying what we don't need.

Week 11 sound perfect Grin

Shrillharridan · 18/10/2020 17:17

Thanks for that
Dh is off this week so we will do a stocktake.
We have a breadmaker which we do use - any other recommendations for useful things I could buy at lakeland!?
I got a camping stove, solar light, wind up torches etc last year.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 18:18

I bet your husband will be thrilled @Shrillharridan . What finer way to spend a holiday. Grin

We've got torches and space blankets in the car but nothing like solar lights. I would love some cool gadgets though.

OP posts:
Whenwillow · 18/10/2020 18:26

If you want cool gadgets @AldiIsla how about a wind up/battery/solar powered radio-torch-phone charger?
And/or a water purifying straw?
Both available from amazon.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 18:41

Wind up radio would be good. Ideal for garden.
I'll have a little looky. Thanks!

How many weeks of food etc should we stock up on?

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 18:55

You a prepper or "just asking"?

I don’t want to alarm anyone but.....

I read an article that said that there will be possible disruption to the supply chain for 6 months. I think everyone should get as much stuff as they have room for, not least to avoid the shops early next year. Covid has been a (I want to say “good”, but of course it isn’t) rehearsal for this.

DontBeShelfish · 18/10/2020 19:49

@Radiatornoise Do you have a link to that article? I've been prepping towards four months but will need to rethink if six months is more likely.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 19:49

Sounds about right.

Look at how long track and trace took.
We're having to replace all systems and checks. Kent permits ffs.

6 months of preps are beyond most people in terms of space and budget.

I'm trying to see it as a cushion, we're still crashing but prepping is like landing on a crash mat.

It's overwhelming though isn't it.

Jesus that's depressing. i was just telling my partner today that i felt like we had enough stuff to tide us over

Thank you so much for sharing. Time for a rethink of everything, it seems. And time for a Gin
KenDodd · 18/10/2020 20:56

I knew the fuckers would crash us out. Feel so angry.

I know. And I bet Johnson, Farage, Rees-Mogg and co will walk away scott free. They will NEVER be held accountable for the damage they've done. They'll just point the finger elsewhere and their voters will blame the EU, the WTO, remain voters, immigrants, the BBC, Northern Ireland, anyone except the people who lied, and lied and lied to them, who they'll still see as heroes.

Radiatornoise · 18/10/2020 21:37

I am so angry about Brexit and the way it has been handled. The ERG and their friends will make billions and they don’t give a shit about you and me.

AldiIsla · 18/10/2020 21:47

Same @Radiatornoise

Here's us trying to make sure we have a bit put by for January and that lot gambling on crashes and misery.

Youandmealwaysandforever · 19/10/2020 00:45

As OP said 6 or even months may not be achievable for most people, cost and space.
I have about a month for some things and a bit less for others. Ideally building up to two months before year end. I just have to try to not get anxious. Best I can do.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/10/2020 02:15

All anyone can do is their best. Most people are limited by space, time, money etc. Very few people will have enough resources for storing 6 months of stuff. Everyone who has stuff stored or is growing their own will help reduce the need for imported food.

Just thinking, last time we mentioned that meds and food would get priority so anything you want to buy that is imported is best got before the ports clog up.

EstherLittle · 19/10/2020 07:59

Can’t now find an article DH showed me ages ago about medicines but it said that lots of supermarket own brand medicines are made in Italy and imports of these will be delayed by Brexit.

I am trying to stock up on migraine tablets as the tesco own brand is what works best for me.

I am going to start a treat box too for the loft as it’s a ball ache to get the knackered ladder down so it should stop me raiding it.

AldiIsla · 19/10/2020 08:36

The only thing I have 6 months of is coffee and bar soap.

Does anyone use soap nuts? I do 2 / 3 loads of washing a day. I tried Smol for space saving but they kept clogging the outpipe. I have small messy Children and use cloth nappies and San pro.

I need more gin (tonic supplies are ok though, after a failure in spring).

I have online shopping slots booked for this and next week, and a further trolley booked for next weekend that I will move once the next slots open up later this week. Mostly fresh stuff.

Storecupboard foods are reasonable. I have plenty to do proper meals generally, but fussy DD will get grumpy that I don't have everything she likes (cos she keeps raiding and eating what I stash for her - teen, mad sportsperson, and getting fussier about healthy and not oily/sugary foods, so lots of protein bars, Vit-Hits and absolutely no red meat...). And DH keeps eating the crisps so there are none there when I get a craving and go look.....

Toiletries were good, but I think we've used up a fair bit so I need nice shower gel for me, and shampoo for DH.

And cleaning supplies are good, although I have no spare washing machine capsules (but both bio and non-bio tubs are currently 3/4 full). First aid and health supplies also generally good, except pain relief (DD and DH both have shoulder problems so have been taking ibuprofen).

Refilled log box at the weekend.

Bought candles a couple of weeks ago.

Need some wine and beer.
Oat milk and almond milk have both become staples in the house, as well as cow's milk - DH and I take oat in our coffee, and DD takes almond in tea and sometimes cereal. But we drink a lot of cow's milk too (me in tea, DD and DH drink it by the pint....).

Ghouliet · 19/10/2020 15:38

Biddy sign yourself up for a milk delivery. My milk & eggs now come from my local diary. Can’t see a reason why they’d be affected by Brexit?

Do local butchers still do deliveries? I know they did in days gone by. No idea if this still happens.

MarshmallowManiac · 19/10/2020 17:08

Have to get most things built up as I have used a lot over the LD but somehow have about a years supply of shower gel which I have built up over many months.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/10/2020 21:30

Easy to do! As long as you have room. It would probably store in the garage. Save room in the house for other stuff. Though that depends on your bathroom storage.

I have a row of bog cleaner next to the loo.
