I don’t know why another thread hasn’t been created yet , so here you go. Now as we prep ourselves to the peak of this pandemic, let’s all face it together and appreciate how fragile our lives are and how we need each other to survive and flourish.

@VenetoResident does that mean the death rate is nearly 10% of the positives? 😳

OP posts:
Sprayitall · 22/03/2020 18:16

Also I’d like to know is it just the elderly dying or are all equally affected? What’s the true picture there?

Done as a separate post as it’s important

Regarding lock screen, I don’t know about other phones but those with iPhones - use your “medical ID” option!

As an asthmatic who also has POTS and has fainted in some VERY awkward places I’ve always used mine.

It gives the ability to list your

name
dob
Known conditions
Known allergies (penicillin and nsaids in my case so very important in regard to this virus)
meds & doses
blood type
Height & weight Blushcrucial for some meds dose calculations.
If you’re an organ donor (if you are tell your next of kin! They still have to give go ahead. It’s something I’m passionate about and all my lot know they can take whatever is of use! I’ll be dead I don’t need it!)

And of course your next of kins (you can do a few) name, number and their relationship to you.

tryingtoprep · 22/03/2020 18:31

Just checking in. I got myself too emotionally involved in some other less gentle threads. I'm letting my own worries about elderly family (and for DP and me) effect me. I don't like myself when I get too worked up. It's all so awful and I'm so upset and angry our government didn't act weeks ago. We could've taken measures to mitigate this.

Hope everyone here is doing ok or as ok as possible under the circumstances. I haven't caught up yet. This thread is a lovely little calm escape from it all.

Some good news. Elderly relative has managed to secure a shopping slot. Such a relief. We still have enough here although we're running out of the nicer treat food. I sneezed a few times today. Hoping it's just the chili powder I cooked with.

I'm going to try pickling veg this week. Never done it before so any tips much appreciated.

I tried to call my local food bank last week but the number didn't work. DP bought some food neither of us eat. Don't know how to donate it. I'll try calling CAB tomorrow. Hopefully they'll know.

MrsFezziwig · 22/03/2020 18:36

@ofwarren I’ve missed your posts.

I know the original theme of the thread was prepping (which was great as I’ve had no need to join in the current madness) but I have enjoyed the way it has diversified so that we have been able to discuss a lot of different Covid related topics, but without the emphasis on scaremongering on some of the other threads.

Graphista · 22/03/2020 18:38

I’m so grateful to the preppers as I’d be completely screwed right now if I hadn’t done some prepping because of brexit!

On my Facebook today the supermarket in my old town with queue all the way around the very large car park! Locally brawling and police involvement at the supermarket here. Glad I’ve not had to join a similar queue or worse been assaulted just for taking a pack of loo roll!

After upgrading to paid nest egg app I’ve worked out I’ve enough for at least 40 meals (I only eat one meal a day) which may seem a lot...but based on Italy may not be enough to ride out the whole situation, so I am continuing to shop when I can (I have to get deliveries and it’s getting increasingly difficult to get slots so sometimes I’m getting 2 deliveries in one week and none the next)

I organised inventory according to Meal components so I could easily see what I had:

Carbs
Protein
Vegetables

In the “name” bit

And then fuller description in “description” bit eg “pasta” or “eggs”

And I created my own categories for location so I know exactly where everything is eg “bottom Cupboard bottom shelf” so I don’t panic hunting in the top Cupboard for something I know I have when it’s in the bottom Cupboard!

Now I just need to remember to deduct numbers when I use an item.

Anyway, I’m also trying to take into account not going overboard on fresh stuff as only got a small fridge, planning some batch cooking which I’ve not done for ages so I’ve also ordered food bags and foil trays for freezing in portions got marker pens in last delivery for marking date of opening on things.

Also ordered stock cubes, herbs and spices, casserole packet mixes as I find them easy to use and they take up very little space (this is starting to become a premium in my small flat) and so were a good option to take my order up to the minimum delivery cost level.

Still need to do some meal planning (not least so I’m not eating very similar meals several days in a row and therefore getting sick of those foods, beans on toast is lovely but not 4 days in a row!) and also want to do a spreadsheet of expected grocery deliveries as I’ve a horrible feeling I may have ordered loads of one item and not enough of others and as they’re with different supermarkets and not same days each week as I’ve just had to grab whatever delivery slots I feel a bit muddled.

May set the spreadsheet up to have a freezer record of batch cooking. Or may use nest egg for that not sure. What do we think?

What I’m really struggling to get is disinfectant! With having ocd I normally get through loads and it is impossible to get hold of in virtually any form at the moment and believe me I’ve tried EVERYWHERE! I’m back to having to limit how much I do which I’d made recently some good progress on from a mh perspective so it’s set me back quite a bit on that score which is frustrating.

I also need to keep an eye on money side of things.

If as hoped everything calms down soon I may be able to go back to regular schedule but need to buy a bit less for a while and that will reduce costs...although this has taught me that having good back up stocks in does help! Not just practically but anxiety side too.

If I’d been completely unprepared this could have led to me becoming even more mentally ill than I already am and I’m already pretty bad! So for that aspect in particular I am very grateful.

@footprintsintheslow I am so sorry for your loss. I had 2 mc before dd. Still hits me days like today even though it was years ago. I found mc association very supportive maybe check out their site and sm? You don’t have to post but might help to read?

“I literally woke up from sleep coughing as though I had drank something which went down the wrong way, where you can't quite catch your breath.” I had whooping cough a couple years back and that’s a good description of that too. Not like a “normal” cough at all. Glad it sounds like you’re on the mend @CVRD

Regarding idiot tourists! Posted on 2 other threads about this. I live in a touristy coastal area and lived in another before and I still have friends there and am on the local Facebook pages. They’re going nuts about the tourists! Both areas the local hospitals have been very badly affected by the cuts and certainly cannot cope with potentially 3/4/5 times more seriously ill people. Fucking idiots!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 22/03/2020 18:59

It's lovely to see people still here. I'm surviving but hungry beacuse I refuse to break into my preps.
I supposedly have 2 more online deliveries and then no more as I can't get a slot even with my ocado reserved for love nor money.

I think I might be on the super high risk register as I have asthma that was dodgy in the past - once got blue lighted in but never admitted! That was years ago. I also have an auto immune condition but came off the drugs months ago.

DH is now doing vital work (at home) for the anti CV effort. So I will have to shop in any case. I need less now beacuse I prepped. But no way do I have 3 momths foood.

Now buying the children clothes as I have one in the massive of a growth spurt and being the eldest, there's nothing I can put him in!

Legoandloldolls · 22/03/2020 19:05

Happy mother's day to the mums and pet mums ( and man child mums 🤣)

I went to Sainsbury's today. It was quite and calm and starting to almost look normal now they are restricting sales.

I had a slight wobble over feeding my 4 kids in such restrictions but the staff was sympathetic to tried to help me navigate that minefield. A stacked gave me one of three of the last bags of pasta they had in stock. I teared up.

I wanted to cry but I wont.

Anyway feel more positive on the food front today.

Watching the South Afroca townships only news 😭😭 I dont think I can even digest what is about to happen there.

I just want to hug my kids so much more right now. Really little things I notice more, like my daughters hair is almost at her waist now. My son with ASD has learnt to count to five since half term.

So. With less rushing around, more time to stop and notice I guess? Got to stay positive while alert and sensible.

On a side note I was debating the merit of setting my debit card alight while it was smothered with hand gel 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That's how we steriles things the loops in the lab while growing petri plates. Put the loop in the flame until.it glows red. I'm only half joking ( disclaimer dont do it, hand gel is extremely flammable )

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/03/2020 19:21

@tryingtoprep which vegetables do you want to pickle and I can give you some advice if you like?
Today I baked some bread for us and the elderly neighbours and started 5 gallons of beer brewing!

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/03/2020 19:23

I also found this while checking the "room of random stuff" for anything useful Smile

What a find!

AlohaMolly · 22/03/2020 19:32

I’m still fuming about the tourists. Snowdonia National park reports the busiest visitor day living memory Angry I’m marking the date on the calendar and expect to see a boom in positive tests in two weeks.

Can someone recommend a decent bread recipe? I’ve always managed to produce bricks before Blush

Trying to convince DP we could get two chickens, but we’ve only got a tiny backyard Sad

DennisTMenace · 22/03/2020 19:41

I have found this thread so useful. It provides news when there really wasn't much available. I have had tips for the freezer, like freezing thinģs in bags flat like a book. Last night I was struggling to get a pizza in there and thanks to you guys, thought to just take the box off.

Now I am social distancing, it feels weird to be using the stash. I resent how much gets used in making everyone a round of sandwiches, or when another loo roll is finished. But I don't want to keep everything for a potential never happen future when we need it now.

MissusMaker · 22/03/2020 19:45

@AlohaMolly we made these simple but soft and tasty burger bun recipe this weekend. I know not why you were looking for but if it helps: www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/40-minute-hamburger-buns/

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/03/2020 19:45

AlohaMolly the trick with bread, is that it takes a lot more water than you think. It will be sticky to start, but keep going with kneeding and it wi become non-sticky and elastic
Flatbreads are easier as they don't necessarily use yeast, at the simplest, just flour, salt, water and a bit of fat, then dry fry each side to cook

Sprayitall · 22/03/2020 20:12

Ok I think with the new guidance for high risk category I might need to prepare for 12 weeks. I think I might need some more for 6 to 8 weeks. My existing supplies might stretch to 6 weeks max. How do we manage this? Should we keep buying stuffs (which means dh getting exposed and again putting me at risk) it will be nice if supermarkets prioritise deliveries for families with high risk people than for people who are healthy and mobile.

@weeds that’s one useful random stuff you found.. :) I found out that I had one dettol wipe pack (that says dettol multipurpose cleaning wipes and predates 5 years ) while sorting out the study/office room/third bedroom today

I found this one more satisfying 😂😂

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/03/2020 20:40

AngusThermopyle my OH was saving this for when went out of office, but it may get called into service earlier than that. It was a stocking filler a couple of Christmases ago

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/03/2020 20:54

I normally travel a lot for work Sprayitall and the amount of hotel soap and shampoo I have unearthed from various suitcases and bags is unreal. I have sorted it all into carrier bags for neighbourhood distribution if required

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2020 21:09

Frost alert! I noticed my broadbeans are flowering today and it looks like central England (and elsewhere) will have quite a sharp overnight frost.

We've been to church... Well, let ourselves into the church garden to play behind a locked fence/ gate. Better than shared garden. CMO advising excercise away from people. Getting injured in an autistic meltdown is not going to help the NHS if we go without excercise.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/03/2020 22:15

Sorry fucking phone jumping about. Didn't mean to at you. Know idea how that happened.

Some people on other threads saying not allowed out... I suspect a lot of them are privileged to live in a house with a garden.

We have had medical advice it is ok and part of the guidelines to go out and excercise. We are not seeing anyone nor touching anything going on or out. Washing hands before leave.

We are not able to have separate rooms or bathroom, children need looking after as they adjust.

tryingtoprep · 22/03/2020 22:34

Thank you @Weedsnseeds1 That would be brilliant! I'm hoping to pickle asparagus and kale just because that's what we have a lot of. Mainly I'm nervous about sterilising the jars.

I want some of that loo roll!

@BlackeyedSusan yes it's so hard being in a small flat with no outside space. I'm dreading being stuck in when it gets warmer. Had to do it before when I was injured. I survived but I really hope we'll be allowed out for even brief exercise. There was a brilliant idea on another thread to have priority exercise slots for those with no outside space.
