Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

From Twitter - good point!

twitter.com/amateuradam/status/1236733713129639940

14 days ago, Italy had fewer coronavirus cases than we do today. They employed similar public health measures to us. Now they have >7000 cases (366 deaths). Unless I'm missing something, this is us in a fortnight. Hopefully we won't wait that long before doing something more.

At what number did each country start lockdown, does anyone know?

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 17:13

Is the will writing service from which.co.uk good? Has anyone tried them?

MinesaPinotPlease · 09/03/2020 17:16

Was discussing 1970s mumps parties with my GP only this morning. They were usually boys only as it was thought best they got it at a young age to avoid issues with fertility later in life.i was very jealous to not be invited Smile

This was of course pre MMR.

The young medical student was sat there today with his mouth open Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2020 17:16

Why are our testing numbers not going up? Is it to do with capacity in the system?

sideorderofchips · 09/03/2020 17:18

One in Guernsey today which doesn't seem to have been declared anywhere other than local media.

Mrsemcgregor · 09/03/2020 17:19

Someone I know through work has a fever and dry cough so was sent home from to call 111. Despite him living in a town which has a confirmed case which was contracted in the UK, they told him he didn’t need testing as he had no recent travel history.

That can’t be right can it?

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 17:24

@RedLentilYellowLentil Part of my weekly groceries from Waitrose arrived today and many of the usual things were substituted but I should say the substitutions were reasonable. The delivery person said it’s manic in the shop with all the panic buying and none left. It’s getting ridiculous.

AmelieTaylor · 09/03/2020 17:24

@Mdryden69

But a lot of you people don’t seem to understand how a government works in a situation like this we are only a few steps from societal breakdown keeping the system going is the priority

What was the point in you name changing just to plop that on our thread!? You wouldn’t be a bloke by any chance would you?

Neome · 09/03/2020 17:25

puppycorn it sounds like you suspect you may have had contact with someone with a positive diagnosis and you need to confirm if this is the case then seek advice from PHE, given that government and health advice has just been updated about entering the delay stage.

Unfortunately you might have to let your school know that without that advice you can’t be sure if you should send your child to school so are keeping them at home.

I just retrieved this Lancet article which seems quite helpful at first glance.

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 17:29

Guernsey is not UK, so that might be why? Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man are crown dependencies but not part of the UK. So they'll report separately as and when.

Neome · 09/03/2020 17:30

Mdryden69 we people are not planning to either breakdown or run the government. What measures are you taking to promote societal cohesion?

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 17:30

You people had chicken pox parties? back in India all I had was a bed made up of plantain leaf topped with neem leaves. (And I was so excited about it because I can have as many tender coconut water and palm fruit I wanted) We also have a tradition of hanging a bunch of neem leaves at the house’s entrance to announce others about pox household and it’s a polite way of turning them away to stop the spread.

Oxyiz · 09/03/2020 17:32

I think people posting here are generally thoughtful individuals, with the education and personal wealth to be able to keep up with this pandemic carefully.

However people in GENERAL are not necessarily well informed or able to take careful measures. They would panic like crazy if Boris did something actually useful right now, and panic is a killer in itself.

lachy · 09/03/2020 17:32

DH went to Costco this morning - he said it was utter bedlam, queuing system in place for water and loo roll.

I tried to have a conversation at work about why it might be important to have a supply of bottled water but was up against the "well they won't shut off the supply!" brigade. When the conversation shifted to Tesco drivers would still be delivering so what's the problem I had to stop myself from saying that if the SHTF then its unlikely.

I was hoping that there would be an email from our senior management team about what they envisage happening in the next few says and weeks, but nothing had come through before I left. There has been a confirmed case in my town

FuckThisWind · 09/03/2020 17:32

I used an online will writing service a few months ago. They are called Beyond. Not sure how much it costs, but don't think too pricey. I got one as part of product testing here on MN.

AmelieTaylor · 09/03/2020 17:33

@Galleyfm.

This is from the Superdrug website

*Made in the UK and approved to British Standards:

  • EN 1040 +EN1500 The alcohol content 70%*

I rather suspect it’s made by the people who made the Gompels stuff, who also make the Purell stuff.

...and probably most of the other stuff.

FuckThisWind · 09/03/2020 17:35

Weird phone call with Docs just now. They said as I'd been diagnosed with a long term respiratory illness in 2014 (asthma) and hadn't ever had a review, I needed to come in for a 20 min appt and possibly be given a preventer inhaler (they have just been dishing out my reliever inhalers on repeat for 6 yrs)

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 17:39

@Neome No I don’t suspect but I’m just scared. Dh went to the pharmacy last Tuesday early hours and wasn’t even there for 5 minutes as it didn’t have the available meds anyway. The surgery and the pharmacy was closed today but it’s open as normal tomorrow. Also it looks like the case has come there only later around Thursday or Friday but I think that’s a valuable advise and reason to talk to the head teacher tomorrow.

Readyme · 09/03/2020 17:44

@Puppycorn my DC got oats in an old pair of tights for a nice oat bath.

It's still pretty common for people to have playdates in hope of their kids catching chickenpox. When I was a nanny my bosses were excited when I had shingles hoping I would give their DC chickenpox before they started school. I had to point out I would have to rub their faces directly on my back which was never going to happen since wearing a top hurt never mind a face.

pemberlyshades · 09/03/2020 17:48

@Puppycorn the WHO can't direct government decisions, but they can offer strong advise. I can't see Bojo and co listening unfortunately

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 09/03/2020 17:48

You’re lucky to have such a proactive doctor, FuckThisWind. It looks like they’re taking the welfare of their vulnerable patients very seriously. They probably also want to get any and all checkups done, before they’re overwhelmed by Coronavirus patients.

Readyme · 09/03/2020 17:48

I for one fully understand the goverment, I am not the slightest bit surprised by their reaction and believe that no matter who was in power the exact same inaction would be happening, that's why I'm a prepper.

Oxyiz · 09/03/2020 17:49

Interview with an Italian doctor saying they're just not treating people over 80.

sideorderofchips · 09/03/2020 17:50

@AutumnCrow I live in Jersey so it's only a matter of time before it hits us. We just don't seem to count in any numbers or even under new cases

FuckThisWind · 09/03/2020 17:51

T0tally yes, my GP surgery is amazing. They tried all ways to get me in ASAP. Sounded like they had definitely been briefed.
