Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

A third person, a man in his 60s with underlying health problems, has died after testing positive for coronavirus, NHS England says

This made me so sad reading this. I realised my DH would be described as a man in his 60s with underlying health problems. He looks so young for his age (and acts it despite his ill health!) I tend to forget he’s older than me but he’s actually very vulnerable. And potentially just a statistic... 😔

I know they can’t give out personal details but it makes it all sound so impersonal and matter of fact. I dipped into the thread started by the hospital consultant who suggested schools should close now and ended up responding a bit snippily to a poster who very breezily announced she just didn’t understand the panic because it ‘only’ affected the old and those with health conditions. As if the old and ill are somehow another species, only to be expected they will suffer and of no concern to us in our cosy little mumsnet world.

Effieray · 09/03/2020 10:37

Morning all.

Welcome to the world 🐱 kittens!

I don't think (unfortunately) they will close the schools yet. I think that will come in a later step of their 4 step plan. I think they will give out more totally obvious general advice to "avoid social gatherings" etc. Stuff which everyone on this thread is already doing.

Catmaiden · 09/03/2020 10:42

Kittens! Flowers

I've prepped as much as I can, and DH and I are now staying put. We have to go outside to feed the livestock and work on the farm, but it's all one parcel of land, with no public footpaths, so hoping we can avoid people as much as possible.

I think the veg plot and the garden in general will look very well tended in a few weeks time, and my pile of craft UFOs will be considerably smaller!

Worried about DS at uni, though ☹️

itsnotjustflu · 09/03/2020 10:47

Yes I feel the results of today's Cobra will be pretty much what we already know. But why are they having it if something hasn't changed? First cobra outlined everything anyway

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 10:47

@Effieray I’m expecting the same too. No drastic measures but just statements that might again reinforce the same things like wash your hands, Bin the tissue avoid crowds and don’t travel to high risk areas. Stuff which everyone is aware of .. schools universities are all like hot beds. Why don’t they think this through I don’t understand. I vaguely remember when there was tsunami once, one parent went to work while the other stayed at home to take care of kids (though situations are very different and this might not work , it will definitely help to reduce the number of social contacts atleast) also I feel there should be atleast an option for parents if they can keep the kids at home they should and the absences shouldn’t be fined in this case.

Catmaiden · 09/03/2020 10:47

@SingingBabooshkaBadly yes, I felt very sad at the latest death for the same reason.
My DH is 70, fit and healthy. I'm over 60, with what they would describe as "underlying health conditions" but also strong and fit. We have active, busy, productive lives, both as farmers, parents and grandparents and (normally) in our wider community.

itsnotjustflu · 09/03/2020 10:48

On another note...Disneyland Paris worker has tested positive. My point is why haven't they closed already FFS. They had stopped gatherings of over 1,000.... But hadn't shut DLP

Effieray · 09/03/2020 10:50

@youkiddingme

Welcome. Not sure about mouthwash but I'd save it for your mouth! We've had lots of discussions about bar soap and water being the best thing. I have ordered some soap leaves that travellers use; if you carry a small bottle of water and them (much less heavy than carrying a full bar of soap) you could wash your hands anywhere.

I am doing exactly the same with regards to parcel and mail and food deliveries. Not OTT at all.

In China they still have all the utilities running so probably best to spend money on food, hygiene and medicine. Having said that, as a long term Prepper, I have other ways of cooking food stashed away.

@just15morepeas

Welcome. Strong bin bags are a necessity I think; I have lots in stock. Useful for so many things.

LittleSwede · 09/03/2020 10:57

I think they announced the upcoming COBRA meeting last Friday, I remember thinking that it can't be 'that urgent' then if they can wait until today rather than holding one on say Saturday?

Anyway, having to step away from other CV threads now as either too much snarking or too much dramatic speculating going on.

Sainsbury's well stocked this morning, only expensive painkillers available though but loo roll, long life milk and pasta had been restocked. No Detol of course.

Love the kittens ofwarren Smile

This text from The Times article yesterday was shared on the CV board main thread:

So the Speaker is in favour of closing parliament if one case is diagnosed, whereas schools are supposed to stay open.

WrapTrap · 09/03/2020 11:06

Just a heads up for people or those who have kids with milk allergies, tesco are limiting cartons of a certain alt milk brands to 5 per shop....

Heartyhooker · 09/03/2020 11:07

Hoping they at least extend the Easter holiday today and grateful that thanks to these threads I am now just replacing things I've used.
Distracting myself by winging a tardis phone cover for ds1s main birthday present next week.
School run seemed quieter today, more people not getting out of their cars when dropping kids off. Both primary and secondary school are still pushing hand washing , but discovered at weekend ds1 didn't think he had to wash his hands before lunch if he's brought a packed lunch. Hope he's got the message now.

bodgeitandscarper · 09/03/2020 11:07

Just noticed that some are using the dettol laundry disinfectant. Just a heads up that you can buy huge boxes of Ariel professional powder with antibacterial already added. I think Persil do it too, but not certain. Its about £35 for a 13kg sack, (other quantities are available), you use much less than domestic powder though, so I think one sack should last a couple of years.

rhij86 · 09/03/2020 11:08

Two more cases confirmed in Wales, bringing us up to 6 (from 2 on Saturday)

84TinsOfBeans · 09/03/2020 11:10

@preponderings I have frozen grated courgette. I janet tried it yet but I'm hopeful it comes out nicely for the recipe I have in mind. I grated it into a clean t towel then squeezed all the liquid out.

As for peppers I've frozen mine diced but strips would be fine too. They are all in little bags.

Legoandloldolls · 09/03/2020 11:18

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring yes please can you send me the link to make the pads? I love sewing but never know what waterproof backing to use

QueSera · 09/03/2020 11:18

Sainsburys order coming today - email from them this morning says they have now run out of the following that were in my order: Dettol spray, Dettol laundry detergent, loo roll and tinned chickpeas.

rhij86 · 09/03/2020 11:20

shit, one of the new cases is in my City.

Ipdipdo · 09/03/2020 11:23

Any thoughts on colloidal silver?
Heard good things about it but when I went to buy it they look like they were for spraying on cuts, wounds etc so not sure which ones are suitable for ingestion
If we do end up getting it I’d like our immune systems to be as strong as possible (youngest has history of viral wheeze)
I’m getting the kids to all take their multi vitamins and probiotics.
Also asked my mum to try and do the same including getting in some echinacea and zinc lozenges

Legoandloldolls · 09/03/2020 11:36

I checked my Tesco order for this Thursday and 1/4 of it was out of stock now so I pooped to Sainsburys just after school run. They had some loo roll in, but when I was back in the ille getting some nappies they had sold out and one shopper couldn't understand why. I wish I was as oblivious! He was told it comes in every day so it will never run out.

I bought two packs of baby wipes as my ds 8 is disabled and sometimes soils at night in a nappy. There wasnt as many there as normal! Baby food, milk and nappies seemed fine.

I had a moment of "how would cope feeding four kids" but there was plenty of food in there. Its hard to ignore this rising panic.

Pebble21uk · 09/03/2020 11:38

I've just been chatting to the guy who comes to help us out with our garden sometimes. He said he has been banging on about coronavirus since January and he can't believe how flippant everyone is about it.

During the conversation he mentioned maybe trying Vicks First Defence as a way to lessen the viral load. It's not going to stop you getting it, but anything which reduces viral load may give reduced symptoms. Maybe worth a try?

Orchidflower1 · 09/03/2020 11:51

Argh it’s really annoyed me that the gov have time to organise a “fake news” task force but not to actually do much else!!

I dreamt about carona last night 🤪 lots of weird hand washing!!!

peachgreen · 09/03/2020 11:51

I managed to order a huge box of baby-wipes from Amazon - their own brand. They also still have loads of nappies in stock. Worth looking if you're having trouble.

Just ordered my O2 sats monitor.

twins2019 · 09/03/2020 11:52

Wow - just back from the gp surgery DD2 has another bout of tonsillitis. I have never seen it so full - lots of elderly people clearly trying to get seen before they are locked down (seems to be the direction of travel). Queue of 13 people in the pharmacy!

I'm hoping one round of antibiotics clears this up as I was very uncomfortable in the surgery and pharmacy. Thankfully DH stayed home with the twins (preemie boys ex-28 weekers just turned 1).

We are in a small rural village so DD1 is still at school - less than 50 children. Wish I could pull her out and lockdown now.

Just seen TFL worker has tested positive today. I feel like this week is going to be the descent into some scary numbers. I cannot
Believe they are allowing flights back from Italy still and no quarantine on return...
