Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

Ps : dd says now we all can sing “three little kittens” together with the kitties

pemberlyshades · 09/03/2020 08:47

This thread has everything- prepping tips, news updates, politeness and now KITTENS!!!

rhij86 · 09/03/2020 08:49

Kittens!!

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 08:55

BBC just says COBRA meeting is 'later'

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51796072

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 09:04

@rhij86 True. I’ve lost my trust because all I can see is they care about the economy more than anything. I don’t think any drastic measures will be put —the worker bees need to work until they die of sheer exhaustion building up and protecting the economy— There can never be a fine balance as they are suggesting. It’s ridiculous that they are suggesting the schools should be open.

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 09:15

Thanks, Puppycorn.

I think Boris Johnson will have a hangover stall for time, dump jobs on Matt Hancock, and panic by Wednesday.

Readyme · 09/03/2020 09:15

Charities are getting ready to feed the most vulnerable kids should the schools close.

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 09:25

@AutumnCrow The same page has a 9.03 am update where it says cancelling events or large gathering is unlikely and not needed now - they have no plans to do it anyway

Gammeldragz · 09/03/2020 09:26

Kittens! Mummy cat looks a little shocked. Please keep us regularly updated with doses of cuteness.

Reusable sanpro is on my list of things to find today. I have a moon cup, but like tampons it makes my period pain worse. Pads would be perfect, maybe even period pants for sleeping in as I hate sleeping with a pad and they always slip around and leak.

I have lots of disposable sanpro, but from what I saw of DD10 in the changing room yesterday, she may be needing some considerably sooner than I'd expected Shock

Have given up trying to keep up with the other thread (worried/Aibu one) as it's so busy and half the posts are bitching now.

youkiddingme · 09/03/2020 09:33

Thank you for the really useful thread.
I'm new to this so sorry if my questions are hold-hat or barking but:
While I have plenty of soap, I haven't been able to get hold of hand sanitizer for emergency use while out. Would mouthwash, which is nearly all alcohol and claims to kill off most mouth germs help at all in a pinch?
Is opening my mail, binning the envelopes and washing my hand in case the postie coughs on them OTT?
Stocked up on gas for the camping stove just in case of power-outages. Too much?

Oxyiz · 09/03/2020 09:37

Thank you so much @SeaToSky, that's really helpful. Flowers I won't buy one then, I'll just hope that if it comes to it the hospital will have space for him.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2020 09:39

The results of the previous large cobra meeting weren't announced until the next day.

My suspicion is that we may need to wait until Wednesday, before the budget and that it could be delivered as a 'this is what we are all going to be doing, and this is how the government are going to help' package.

MoonlightMistletoe · 09/03/2020 09:43

Well a lot of people with trollies full of all the products that have been going out of stock in other areas in Lidl Croydon this morning, no nappies in the size I needed so I'm late with that however have the four pack of wipes in stock.

A few people popping into the poundstrecher shop asking for hand sanitizer obviously that was gone.

Good to know people are prepared/prepping.

MoonlightMistletoe · 09/03/2020 09:48

Also just a reminder to those who push pushchairs to wipe the bars/handles on the pushchair.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 09/03/2020 09:50

I've just ordered some plastic travel soap boxes off Amazon, bar soap is still relatively easy to get hold of and I think if we are out and about we can easily pop a bar of soap in a bag. No need for gel. There is usually a tap somewhere at least!

just5morepeas · 09/03/2020 09:54

Hello, long time lurker here, lovely to see kittens here too! Hope they're doing well today.

I'm stocked up on most things already but I was wondering if it's worth me keeping a decent stock of strong bin bags in.

I'm prob overthinking, but if a large amount of the population gets it, it wouldn't take many off sick for bin collections to get reduced in frequency/stopped for a while and the results of that are not pretty. This thought was prompted by my brown bin getting forgotten for a couple of bin days - it finally got emptied today and stunk so much I was nearly sick. I might get some bin buddy too - it's supposed to deter flies and smells a lot better.

doneaflit · 09/03/2020 09:57

Hi, I'm a lurker who has name changed to de-lurk. I've never name-changed before and my old username is really identifiable, and on the topic of prepping, I don't want anyone in real life to identify me (for obvious reasons). Really hope this works Confused

I'm anxious about my son who has asthma. Although I'm always anxious about him, even when there isn't a novel virus affecting lungs! I'm taking hope from the fact they say kids are more resilient to this one, and they don't always mention asthma as one of the 'pre-existing conditions' that out someone at risk.

There has been a confirmed case in my village.

just5morepeas · 09/03/2020 10:01

Great idea about travel boxes for bar soap. That's a bit more practical to carry around than a bottle of liquid soap too - no leaking to worry about!

TipseyTorvey · 09/03/2020 10:06

@justmorepeas It's a good point on the rubbish bins. Luckily we bought a metal waste burning bin for the garden a few years ago and have a composter so I might have to make use of those to at least get rid of some of it. Not great for the environment I know but probably better than being overtaken by rats if the rubbish piles up just outside the house. If the tip is still open I wonder if we'll be allowed to take our own rubbish there?

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 10:07

it’s not enough if we keep our hands clean , we need others to keep themselves clean as well to prevent the spread and even then, there is this risk of coughing and spreading them. To be honest I don’t think it’s spread can be contained but may be slowed down if we took all the hygiene measures and everyone of us follow the hygiene rules to the tee - all this in addition to social distancing.

Neome · 09/03/2020 10:13

On another thread (worried about? maybe) a poster has linked to a swine flu quarantine blog by a mum who nursed her 3 children through quite serious illness at home then caught it herself but the family managed to avoid transmission to the other resident parent who never caught it.

She reminded me that there’s an area of prepping I’ve completely neglected.

Over the weekend a disabled family member confided that their depression is currently stronger than their medication is controlling. Amongst other strategies and plans to speak to GP we decided on dvd humour therapy.

Olive reminded me I need to dig out anything that will make us all laugh, distract us and give us inspiration and emotional release. Personally I wouldn’t find horror uplifting. Inspector Clouseau might be worth a nostalgic visit (no doubt I will gasp in horror at the non pc side).

This will cost me nothing (if I avoid Amazon🙂) I don’t need to go out to do it and I will get 2 Kondo points.

🙏🏼

MotherShip · 09/03/2020 10:14

According to the Guardian (don't know how to do links):
"A special cross-Whitehall unit has been set up to counter coronavirus-related disinformation, including from Russia and China, working closely with social media companies to rebut false and inaccurate claims about the disease" and
"Oliver Dowden, the culture secretary, said defending the country from misinformation and digital interference was a top priority, and that expert teams had been brought together to respond to any threats identified".

I thought that stopping the spread of the virus and stopping people from dying from it would be more important.

I also think that this will be used to stop people finding out accurate information about the virus (so they don't panic and will carry on as normal) and hiding the real number of people being infected and dying from it.

I am not scared of the virus, particularly as I have used the brilliant infromation from these threads to prepare as well as I can (thank you so much to all the contributors!) but I am terrified of this governement and what they are going to do. They are sinister.

MoonlightMistletoe · 09/03/2020 10:14

That's true puppy, I'm doing everything I can hygiene wise however I was still sandwiched between two people this morning on a tram, school run and people on their way to work can get manic.

Duckyneedsaclean · 09/03/2020 10:17

I've always (for years) kept my store of soap/surface cleaner etc on open shelves by the back door. I've put them away now Confused probably an overreaction but I feel better.
