Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Emotional Prep Thread

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

If you imagine the lipid layer as the cell wall holding its innards in place, soap pops the single cell and you get virus guts all over the place, but they are dead

Ta daaa

Plain flour and baking powder!
So much can be done with plain flour it's really cheap too supermarkets often sell 1kg bags for around 50p.

  1. P.flour + baking powder + sugar + milk = pancakes
  2. P.flour + left over potatoes = potatoes scones
  3. P. Flour + butter/butter alternatives/lard = pastry for pies and Cornish pasty than can be made with very little meat but filling.
  4. P.flour + sugar + butter/butter alternatives = shortbread biscuits
  5. P. Flour + butter = crumble for the top of tinned or frozen fruit
  6. P.flour with baking powder will give you Dumplings
  7. P.flour + eggs + oil + milk = Yorkshire puddings, add.Sausages you have toad in the hole.

That's all I can remember of the top of my head but there will be plenty more.

Potatoes is another item I would buy, you can get 7.5kg bags in Aldi for £3.50 however they are not proper dirt farm potatoes so unless you have somewhere cold to store them it might not be worth it.

@Nato what soap bar should we buy? Is there anything specific or is any bar fine? I have couple of them in the cupboard just wanted to make sure I have couple more and buy the right ones as we are running out already

ScatteredMama82 · 06/03/2020 12:18

@HasaDigaEebowai er, thanks for that. I think the fact that I'm even on this thread suggest that I'm extra cautious, and therefore not an 'arsehole of the highest order'. Nice to meet you by the way.

For clarity (if it were needed) if we're actually ill or isolated to avoid spread due to suspected contact then obviously we'll be going nowhere beyond our own property.

If the school closes then we will be heading out for daily walks.

Depending on if your family will eat it, Cous Cous can be really cheap and filling. Doesn't take up alot of room and you just need to add boiling water, i eat a lot of the flavoured ones and sometimes add tuna to bulk it up.

Apples tend to last longer than most fruit - My son loves sliced apple with a spoon full of peanut butter for dipping, its filling, good protein and very sweet.

Tins of hotdogs, can make a lunch with long life/part baked rolls, keep a couple back and slice them up to add into pasta sauce to bulk it up

Nato

Thank you for clarifying about bars of soap, I couldn't understand how that would be more hygienic than bottled.

Blimmin heck though. We had just become a plastic free household & using homemade natural remedies before all this began.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 12:19

scatteredmamma I wasn't calling you an arsehole of the highest order and I'm sure most people commenting on the threads is sensible. But there are others who read the threads that are not

My DH has planted more potatoes along with all the other veg he normally grows (we have quite a large plot with a greenhouse and poly tunnel) just in case. But obv veggies won’t be ready for a while, quite a while. But even he (who is in the “it’s just the flu” camp) appears to be starting to take it seriously

Effieray · 06/03/2020 12:22

Readyme

Thank you - found your list really helpful.

Gingerninja4 · 06/03/2020 12:22

I collect from supermarkets for a food waste prevention company all use by or best before that day so charitys/food banks can not take )

Then I share it on the app for others to collect rather than it going in bins.Is open to all people to request on app so people from all levels of income/

Normally left with loads of bread that no one wants(I don't throw it out mix of birds and pudding and bread crumbs and for first time all the bread has been requested

Everything I have listed has gone

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 12:22

Puppy don’t worry, just soap. Standard bars of soap.

NOT soap free cleanser though (like some facial cleansers for eg)

Soap free cleanser might not, I’d have to have a look, so to be sure, a bar of soap is all you need

Expensive soap free bars / liquid cleansers, I wouldn’t use

@Heartyhooker one takes the normal calpol and one takes 6 plus, I probably have just under half a bottle each. I will look for the cheaper versions. I'm just outside London in a commuter town. I do have some money in my daughters piggy bank, which I might borrow for a few days to help us out. I've wanted to get prepared for this a couple of weeks ago, but as soon as money has gone into my account it's gone straight back out, with all the expenses of moving.

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 12:25

@Effieray

No worries

Standard soap bars can leave bits of organic matter like soil or dirt stuck to them but that’s just like having a bit of pencil stuck to the soap, no harm and bacteria / viruses are dead but there might be visual dirt or a hair for eg

Dump the plastics and use soap bars!!

Puppycorn · 06/03/2020 12:31

I wanted to share another two of the tips - always spray the boxes and parcels you are going to handle. remember to spray under the boxes too to prevent spread.

For those who are freezing bread and have no freezer space, please freeze nutritious food than bread.

Also someone was talking about their business insurance. How would you up it please can someone explain?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 06/03/2020 12:33

Liquid Marseilles soap is ok for killing germs isn’t it? It’s pure soap rather than hand wash I think. I use it as I find bar soap causes the sink to block up (This may be because I’m a bit germphobic and therefore wash my hands way too much Blush)

Puppycorn · 06/03/2020 12:35

@NatoPMT - Standard soap for body and face or soap detergents for laundry?

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 12:55

Puppy, personally I’m ok with a 60degree wash but I’d recommend additional measures for colder wash specific laundry

Thinking about it, While this is happening I’m going to only wear cotton and put my wool away now it’s turning spring

Marseille soap - I assume this is soap and not soap free cleanser? If so, yes it’s fine! Soap free cleansers state they are soap free as it’s usually a selling point as it’s so much more gentle. At pandemic time, everyone is up for harsh!!

Kylee I think Castile soap is much the same as the Marseilles liquid soap I use. I’m assuming they’re fine as both are pure soap I believe. hoping Nato may be able to confirm Smile

84TinsOfBeans · 06/03/2020 13:03

@OhYouBadBadKitten thanks for pill reminder app tip. I definitely need this anyway without the virus invasion.

SeaToSki · 06/03/2020 13:04

A couple of days ago I froze a load of eggs (beaten up and portioned first). This morning I defrosted a couple and did a test scrambled egg. It was actually really good. It needed a touch more salt than I would normally use but apart from that it was very good. I am happily going to freeze somemore now and know I can bake with them and make omlettes and scrambled eggs. They also fit into very small corners in the fridge

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 13:07

Johnson doing the press rounds yesterday, stating his government can feed the whole country, then Hancock today, saying please stop panic buying, there’s enough for everyone.... my reaction to this is to think they are worried about food stocks because they can’t feed everyone and they know what’s coming

Yesterday I read in interview with a food industry person, from standards or regulator or whatever, sorry for being vague.

This person said the emergency protocol would be to reduce what’s available to essentials and the army would guard the depots in the event of rationing or food riots

He says they have a few days of non perishable items in warehouses, and a day or 2 worth of perishables.

The politicians are telling everyone to stop buying

My only chink of hope in this, is if the food is in really short supply then surely the government would embargo certain reporting to prevent the tone the mass media are reporting under - the media are putting out a lot of stories that will be whipping people up which the politicians would want to prevent

I don’t trust any of them though. The only ones to trust are health workers

Vaki · 06/03/2020 13:08

I'm slightly worried now, have family members who work in retail and they're saying that while there deliveries are coping, the shelves are becoming empty a lot quicker.

Any tips for them hygiene wise when they're focred to serve and interact with people all day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/03/2020 13:09

Tomato soup crisis contained. Carpet looks cleaner than the rest of the carpet now. Phew! Red wine stain remover has done the trick.

Vaki · 06/03/2020 13:11

We've to realise food wise as well, the uk doesn't hold weeks worth of food, it holds a few days worth in the supermarkets warehouses and that's it. We rely on food constantly being imported and the supply line not being interrupted
