Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

@puppycorn just regular soap for at home it would seem. Also once I thought I'd prepped I then bought a load of just add water bread mix, pancake mix, dumpling mix and pastry mix...... could come in very handy

KundaliniRising · 06/03/2020 14:42

Sambucol is very easy and cheap to make, dried elderberries can be found on line. It is just a very expensive elderberry syrup.

There are many recipes online, but basically it is elderberry, water, sugar. I tend to add honey and echinacea leaves to it.

JustMeAndMyTins · 06/03/2020 14:46

Just a note to say that there is a lot out there about sambucol NOT being a good thing to use in the case of serious respiratory illness. It largely centres around cytokine storms and I read a doctor’s personal swine flu account where she talks a lot about vitamin d levels being relevant. It’s not something I know much about yet but please do some reading.

Readyme · 06/03/2020 14:50

5 more Scottish cases today (included in the 163)
2 fife
1 Grampian
1 Lothian
1 forth Valley

Effieray · 06/03/2020 14:51

2nd UK death on Sky News ☹️

Tropicalsquirrel · 06/03/2020 14:53

Would be interested to find out more about Sambucol. I read somewhere that the way it worked was to increase the level of cytokines which sounded dangerous with something that could cause cytokine storms. Have we heard much more about whether the coronavirus is causing those storms? There was some initial evidence coming out of Wuhan in the early days but I haven’t seen anything since.

Just catching up On the posts since last night. So sorry for the family of the second victim - dealing with his passing and worries about their own health at the same time.

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring

So sorry to hear about your husband. You sound like you have a lot on your plate. Glad you delurked and I hope you can get some support here.

Well today I bought corn beef. It felt like the right thing to do :) last time I had it was at girl guide camp in the 80s!

Met my Italian neighbor today who was planning her prepping shopping list. Told her about my plan to make and live off Christmas Cake if we run out of food. Her eyes lit up (I make her one every year) and she offered me some of their homemade limoncello in return for a cake. Deal done.

It struck me afterwards that bartering with neighbors could be a good way to go if things get very hard. Am now eyeing up the others wondering what we could swap.

Legoandloldolls · 06/03/2020 15:10

I popped in Tesco to buy a cake today. No past except the Italian branded stuff and no loo roll at all. But lots of kitchen roll so it's pure panic buying and stock pulling.

If I had no loo roll then ever I know "one sheet is Plenty good enough " 🤣

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 15:15

Can I give a recommendation again for dried soya mince. Its far cheaper than buying something like a tin of corned beef and it goes much further. You genuinely cannot tell that it isn't normal minced beef when you use it in a bolognese/chilli. I think it is one of the best stockpile items to have.

Heartyhooker · 06/03/2020 15:16

@MinesaPinotPlease Jack Munroe's book has several recipes Islington beef in chilli and Spag bol, quite tempted to try

Sending love to @CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring and the other poster with cancer in the family. And a huge thanks for all the invaluable practical tips and ideas. I loved the link to the mum who nursed her 3 children through swine flu (I think) that someone posted yesterday so thanks for that.
I’ve just finished typing up our family action plan incase myself and DH become ill at the same time, or even if I was the only patient, because I’m concerned about how the rest of them would keep family life ticking over without me.
Saw my gp this morning about a non virus issue, but did ask him about my risks being asthmatic, and DH having rheumatoid arthritis. Whilst we are slightly more at risk, he wouldn’t expect either of us to become seriously ill with the virus, but also suggested that short of us hibernating until it’s fully over, we’re unlikely to be able to escape it, mainly because of DH being a teacher. So I now need to decide whether I carry on staying away from all the kids’ home-ed activities, stay away from just the indoor ones and do extra woods/beach trips to compensate, or just resign myself to the fact that I’m going to get it so might as well not become unsociable for potentially no benefit.
He is very scathing about the gov’t’s handling of the situation, said it’s being seen as a dummy run for a bigger threat such as Ebola, and gov’t support so far has extended to about 1.5 days worth of gowns and masks for their surgery. He does feel that, unfortunately, this is going to be become the normal 😢 I guess the only positive to take from all that is that for those of us who usually take a prepping approach to life, we won’t find things as difficult to adjust to on a day-to-day practical sense, but my goodness, it doesn’t bode well, does it. I do sincerely hope he’s wrong.

BanKittenHeels · 06/03/2020 15:28

Long term prepper with several name changes, I’ve been on the prepping forum since we took over another sub forum and begged for this one. Been reading this series of threads in between work hours but have only just caught up! Thank you for all of the hard work at containing relevant information, along with calming advice into one thread. It’s the most calm place I’ve seen nCV discussed on the internet.

We are well prepped - I run a tight ship with spread sheets and have been somewhat of a prepper all my adult life. We have everything we need food wise for about 2 months and to help family members and a few neighbours and colleagues. 2 months might sound extreme but I didn’t start in Jan, so please don’t feel you have to be where I am. Lots of people would scoff at just 2 months!

We have piece of land to the side of our house which is unadopted, I’ve planted tomatoes, beans, lettuce, potatoes, strawberries and some other bits and bobs for the community.

Things are a bit scary for us at the moment as DH and I are both HCP working in major hospitals in a large British city.
FUCK OFF DAILY MAIL CUNTS Today letters and texts were sent out to all of DH’s clinic patients, GET FUCKED DAILY MAIL meaning all clinics for his department have been cancelled for the next 4 weeks.

KISS MY HOLE DAILY MAIL I work in ED - we have a pod (basically one of those old car park attendants cabins) outside the entrance and next to the ambulance bay. HEY DAILY MAIL LICK MY CLIT It is a bit of a scrum at handover as to which duo are sent in to swab. We haven’t had a confirmed case yet but someone who lives nearby and would usually (geographically) attend our hospital ended up in a neighbouring hospital.

I’m on my days off until Tuesday, so I’m preparing some worksheets and activities to educate the children at home. We were planning to home educate our primary children at home from September anyway but I think we are going to withdraw all of our children formally via email this weekend.

I’m willing to muck in at work until I get it, this is the job of my dreams and helping people is what I love most. But we are now trying to figure out the best way to juggle
family life and our frontline jobs, especially with our family abroad. Our nearest relative is neutropenic, so I’m obviously incredibly worried there. We have a nanny and I worry for her being far from home but we see her as family and she and her DP are provided for through this.

We are in this for the long haul and colleagues expect 2-3 separate peaks before the autumn.

So sorry to hear your news Cookies.

BanKittenHeels · 06/03/2020 15:30

Oh and we had someone FUCK OFF DAILY MAIL attempt to steal a load of PPE from triage yesterday!

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 06/03/2020 15:39

Wow @BanKittenHeels you’re doing an amazing amount to support your community, that’s fantastic! And welcome to the home-ed community, too 😁 Do stay safe at work.

AlohaMolly · 06/03/2020 15:40

My friend lives in the southeast and she says they’re queuing out the door in Sainsbury’s today and that she got one of the last toilet rolls from the shelf.

peachgreen · 06/03/2020 15:49

My Who Gives A Crap order from yesterday was dispatched today, just in case anyone is still on the hunt for toilet roll.

fuckitywhy · 06/03/2020 15:54

163 cases - and again, testing is still days behind the reality. Tip of the iceberg.

MissusMaker · 06/03/2020 16:00

Has a second death been confirmed? I was just googling "COVID-19 Buckinghamshire" to see if u could fine confirmed cases near me and several local papers are referencing a second death, a man in Milton Keynes hospital?

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/03/2020 16:09

Posters are now up in my daughters primary school informing parents that the government are fully prepared for Covid-19 along with the Catch it,Bin it ,Kill it posters.

electrichedgehog · 06/03/2020 16:12

Totally agree with this. Useful for making beef mince go further too if you want to use meat but have limited freezer space and/or budget.

The dried soya chunks are excellent as well. Perfect for stuff like curries and stir fries.

BanKittenHeels · 06/03/2020 16:16

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Just had a text to say there is now a case at my hospital.

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 16:18

I love the community support stuff too - thank you for thinking of the wider angle KittenHeels

Last year my daughter planted Pink Lady seeds and they grew really well, we re-planted them in the social housing communal space on the next street to us last autumn. There’s strict restrictions on public food soil quality though

We planted some in Derbyshire too

Food should grow everywhere and be available.
