interesting I was watching Sky news were Jeremy Hunt was questioning Chris whitty about all sorts. But what I found interesting was as chris whitty was saying how the virus can last on surfaces such as on the tube, but as long as you don't touch your face before washing your hand it's fine as it not through skin contact but transmits like the flu. He went on to say it's infectious through respiratory factors, because of the water particles. He went on to say that's why the flu is more prevalent in winter because in summer windows are open giving more ventilation, as people in confined spaces is were it transmits.

Okay so since he's just said all that.....Then doesn't that mean masks would actually help protect you when travelling in confined space with lots of other people coughing and sneezing, like the Tube?

Justmum89 · 05/03/2020 10:24

Just seen a news report.....unsure of accuracy saying government have u-turned on geographical location sharing and they will continue to do this with appx a 24 hr delay so they can confirm cases and are looking at the right tech to produce this maps etc. Anyone have any more info on this?

HasaDigaEebowai · 05/03/2020 10:27

Had to do the school, run this morning and I stopped in lidl on the way back to top up the cat food stash. Cashier was wearing gloves. I was really pleased to see it.

NewYearNewTwatName · 05/03/2020 10:28

I think it's in the guardian Justmum89

TreesSandSea · 05/03/2020 10:31

Yes, I have also noticed a number of comments on threads berating the ‘Preppers’ for , well, preparing, and being very cross that they are not able to indulge their own —panic buying — preparations.

I think scared = angry

Though they would deny it. I am very glad not to be part of the scramble.

Justmum89 · 05/03/2020 10:31

@NewYearNewTwatName yes that is where I have seen it. I never know how reliable different media sources are?

pemberlyshades · 05/03/2020 10:32

Yes @NewYearNewTwatName that's how I interpreted it too. The primary way of transmission is through droplets getting in eyes/nose/mouth.

This happens via inhaling droplets from coughs/sneezes in confined spaces before they fall to the ground or surfaces.

The secondary way of transmission is touching a surface and transferring those droplets to your eyes/nose/mouth.

I would think any protective gear that limits 2/3rd's of the body points of entry of the virus would help protect either by reducing the opportune for the virus to spread through the primary or secondary route.

Like masks and disposable gloves.

RocketQueen21 · 05/03/2020 10:32

@Justmum89 you’re correct , it’s just been discussed at the Live Coronavirus Comittee and Chris Whitty has said there was an error in initial information re location sharing and that they will indeed continue to share locations after a 24 hour period as more cases means more work in determining locations hence the 24 hour delay. It’s live now on BBC Parliament

Not posted before but been reading since thread 7. Brilliant thread full of useful info so thank you.
I've bought stuff that would not have crossed my mind such as zinc lozenges and Sambucol liquid. Also freezer is full so I feel as ready as I can be.
However, reading about the uk guy from China and how he felt when in the thick of it, I've realised I need to get more things that if I do get ill I can reach from my bed. So today's list is small bottles of juice, water etc. (Someone mentioned this up thread I think). I've kind of factored more for lockdown but now feel I should focus on 'when I get it' Sad
Got a dh who is NOT on board Angryso I've hidden most of it and 3 girls who are getting there... Son is on a gap year and currently on a tiny island off Thailand. I can't do anything about him so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

Lastly, I was planning on going to crufts on Saturday but I can't decide whether to or not. Would any of you?

HasaDigaEebowai · 05/03/2020 10:38

My friend who is a senior A&E consultant was on holiday at half term and took masks for her family. She clearly doesn't think they're pointless..

I think the very mixed messages that we are being given about masks are for a few reasons:

  1. There are not enough and they don't want supply to be even lower
  2. Handwashing is so vitally important that they don't want people to think "I've got a mask I'm fine"
  3. People like to mock others and are more concerned about whether they look like a tit
pasanda · 05/03/2020 10:38

Where are the threads mocking peepers? Aibu?

pasanda · 05/03/2020 10:39

Preppers not peepers!! BlushGrin

ThreeTree · 05/03/2020 10:39

Sainsbury’s last night barely any tissues, UHT milk and hand soap. No sanitiser or wipes.
Everything else in good stock. I picked up a couple of cupboard treats (steamed pudding pots, stroopwaffles, biscuits) after noticing our stocks were very boring! Also picked up some meat and cheese for the freezer, portioning it up before it went in.

Glad it's not just me then.

I can see why wearing a mask all the time when out and about isn't too useful especially if you mainly just walking about outside and in and out of shops. But on public transport I can definitely see the benefits.

The advice maybe because there just aren't enough disposable masks, and what we have are needed by health professionals. So they are desperate to down play the use of them.

HasaDigaEebowai · 05/03/2020 10:45

Lastly, I was planning on going to crufts on Saturday but I can't decide whether to or not. Would any of you?

No.

I was up late last night and listening to the chief science officer being interviewed. He said open air events are slightly less risky than indoor events. The transmission however is going to come from those you are stood/sat close to. It's about the number of people you come into contact with. As a result there is some reluctance to call off large scale events when going to the pub or a restaurant is potentially exposing people to the same risk. However in general social isolation is a key part in preventing unnecessary spread and so restricting social contact is vitally important.

Justmum89 · 05/03/2020 10:49

@RocketQueen21 thankyou for confirming that. That gives me a small amount of relief. Hopefully they will give us a bit more information specific to areas rather than just counties. It helps everyone make their own decisions. I'm barely going to the supermarket at the moment I wouldn't personally attend Crufts but it is down to everyone's personal risk assesment I think

pasanda · 05/03/2020 10:54

I'm definitely 90% decided we're not going to crufts but DD's so looking forward to it!

avocadoincident · 05/03/2020 10:54

It's a personal call on wether to go out to big events. I wouldn't go to c
Crufts but I did go to Cardiff on the train yesterday. I avoided peak times and had hand gel and wipes.

I hope they cancel the 6 nations as hate losing which Wales surely will on Saturday

pasanda · 05/03/2020 10:55

I wish the government would put a ban on these big events.

starray · 05/03/2020 10:56

No handwash anywhere or sanitizer gel! Grrr....

Can I also suggest not wearing shoes in the house...I mean....have you seen the spittle everywhere on the streets?

Funkycats · 05/03/2020 10:56

pasanda on the coronavirus board i think.

wherethewavesarehighest · 05/03/2020 10:58

Hi everyone, I have been following these threads for a while and the info has been great so thank you.
We've got enough preps to be going on with but I think I'll pop into Lidl tomorrow after nursery run just to top it off.
I live in Scotland and we do have at least one case in our health board area but no idea where abouts.

peachgreen · 05/03/2020 10:59

@pemberlyshades I agree. Prepping and panic buying are two entirely different things. I started prepping for Brexit so I don't consider myself long term at all and I've definitely bought at a faster rate than most peppers but I certainly haven't had to resort to any panic buying. The only thing I'm really stocking up on is paracetamol and ibuprofen and you can't buy that in bulk anyway (as far as I know).

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 11:07

I really don't mean this to come across the wrong way & hate to sound awful @pasanda but would your DD be looking forward to a member of your family becoming quite sick or possibly die because of a virus possibly caught & passed on from either of yourselves? Crufts will happen next year & the year after that.
I say this as a mother contemplating pulling both her DC out of school from tomorrow & with that means ceasing their extra curricular activities which they look forward too. Basically housebound until this over.
