Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Closing the hospital to clean it is hot on the ball. Wish they were like that here

KundaliniRising · 22/02/2020 09:36

Uk gov could take a leaf out of the Italian gov's proactive action. Goodness they are on the ball!

It saddens and angers me that Chinese (as an ethnic group) people are being targeted for racial abuse due to cv19. Ffs

There seems to be an ignorance pandemic also Angry

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 09:42

Ignorance is endemic...

BrokenBrit · 22/02/2020 10:00

Shit I am so upset for all the people this is affecting and how scary to be in some of the places at the centre of this, and I’m worried for us personally for the first time.
DF in his 70s is in N. Italy, due to fly home Sunday, my DW is an elderly care nurse in a busy city hospital, so no chance of hunkering down, and I work in lots of schools as a peripatetic teacher. It just feels inevitable now it’s going to affect us too. Sad

BrokenBrit · 22/02/2020 10:03

Sorry, wrong thread, meant to add to the AIBU one.

applesandpears33 · 22/02/2020 10:07

BrokenBrit - just as relevant on this one!

BrokenBrit · 22/02/2020 10:09

Thanks @applesandpears33. I like following the preppers threads, but don’t usually have anything useful to comment as am fairly disorganised. But am trying, for the family, to keep a stash.

SawingForTeens · 22/02/2020 10:13

What’s the Japanese for “clusterfuck” again?

Apparently that would be Kurasutāfakku

teta · 22/02/2020 10:27

Has anyone else with a Chinese name been sent this warning from their gp's? ' If you have a cough, temperature or shortness of breath and have been to China, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong. Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the last 14 days, or have been in contact with someone having Coronavirus, you may at risk of Coronavirus. Please do NOT leave the house or attend the surgery, instead ring 111 for advice. Thank you. Medical Centre '

Parker231 · 22/02/2020 10:36

DH is a GP and they have sent a text to all patients regardless of surname. Unfortunately some people are ignoring it and turning up at the surgery or hospital.

BatSegundo · 22/02/2020 10:37

Teta I'm sure lots of people with both Chinese-sounding and typically British names will have received that as it is the standard blurb PHE are suggesting GP surgeries either post on their websites, record on their answer phones or text to their patients. I haven't had a text but another poster upthread has and the recorded message is the same at my GPs.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2020 10:37

No but that's the exact message on our online gp appointments system.

BatSegundo · 22/02/2020 10:37

Cross post with Parker

nillygin · 22/02/2020 10:40

teta, my mother had that same message and she has a very British sounding name... I think it’s a blanket text.

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 10:42

We received that text and have a Jewish surname.

LittleSwede · 22/02/2020 10:43

I think we t would be a good idea if all GP practices send a text to all registered patients. With half term nearly over I wonder how many families may have been to Thailand for example for some winter sun? Kids then develop coughs and flu like symptoms and parents just put it down to winter bugs etc. Spread it around schools and so on.

Popped into a Nuffield Health centre yesterday for a leaflet, on their front desk was a list if countries affected by coronavirus. There was no advice on what to do if you developed symptoms after visiting these counties though though but I guess any attempt at raising away is better than none?

teta · 22/02/2020 10:50

Oh, that's fine if everyone's getting it. We just thought we were being racially profiled. Yes, it makes sense that everyone is sent it.

tallah · 22/02/2020 10:53

Does anyone know of when the estimated time is that we will see a surge in cases and can then call it a pandemic? Like if we take China and Korea as examples we should be able to work it out? But I can't be arsed so wondered if anyone had haha !

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 11:17

Honestly by the WHO's own definition it is a pandemic now.

They have clearly been holding off calling it one but I can't see that they can get through next week without announcing it officially because it's starting to become laughable.

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 11:23

WHO's definition of a pandemic:

"Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way."

Basically:

  • Community level outbreaks
  • In at least the original country (China) plus one other country in a different region (that is outside Asia - take your pick between Iran and Italy)

The "Phase 5" criteria it mentions is human to human transmission in at least 2 countries in the same region (we already have China, Korea, Japan so that is met).

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 11:24

My bet is that they won't announce over the weekend but perhaps on Monday...

mybrainhurtsalot · 22/02/2020 11:25

I got this text about 10 days so I expect it was sent to everyone at the surgery:

This message has been sent by XXXXXX XXXX Surgery with Advice from Public Health England. DO NOT come to the surgery if you have been to Asia in the past 2 weeks or in contact with someone that has, and you/they have chesty symptoms OR fever with no other symptoms. First ring NHS 111 they will advise you. If advised to call the surgery please make us aware of your possible coronavirus contact, the receptionist will ask a GP to call you back.

MissPoldark · 22/02/2020 11:26

I understand it’s not necessarily about seeing a surge of cases, rather it’s when there appears to be sustained community transmission in multiple countries.
I’m not sure what the impact would be of an official declaration of a pandemic. When they announced it was an international health emergency that meant governments could take more actions, but I’m not sure what the likewise implications would be of calling it a pandemic.

AlohaMolly · 22/02/2020 11:27

What does that mean in real terms for the U.K. though? Life as normal and hope not to catch it or assume you’ll catch it and hope it’ll be mild?

EliK · 22/02/2020 11:28

Hello, can I join? I've been following Dr John Campbell on YouTube, it's concerning we don't see much information anywhere else. I've quietly been prepping food and essentials.
