Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Presumably she paid via contactless..

SugarStealer · 13/02/2020 16:19

I really do not think that our authorities are handling this at all correctly and don't seem to grasp the seriousness of it. Its scary.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 16:22

I think I'm actually giving up following this. Its clear that the UK authorities are not going to take the correct measures so it is what it is now.

We have the ability to stay at home if necessary. Plenty of food, water and other things we might need. I have masks, I have disinfectant, I have hand gels and lots of soap. Nothing more I can do.

Emmabryant123 · 13/02/2020 16:26

*I've just been reading up on dengue fever...the lack of focus on it compared to COVID just goes to show how little we in the West give a shit as long as it doesn't come here...

Each year between 50 and 528 million people are infected and approximately 10,000 to 20,000 die

Agree with this.
It's really made me think actually.

Emmabryant123 · 13/02/2020 16:27

hasa

Sounds like the anxiety talking. I am anxious to but I'm sure the authorities are doing what is needed.

FelicityFebruary · 13/02/2020 16:29

It does sound suspiciously complacent.

Who knows what is correctly reported though.

chicken2015 · 13/02/2020 16:32

Hasa im Curious why u think the UK authorities are not going to take the correct measures? Why wouldnt they? How would that benefit them?

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 16:32

It isn't anxiety talking it just the realisation that most people aren't following it anyway and actually Im as prepared for it as I can be.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 16:35

Hasa im Curious why u think the UK authorities are not going to take the correct measures? Why wouldnt they? How would that benefit them?

It benefits them because they don't want a panicked population staying indoors and not spending money/people not travelling etc. But hearing stories of drivers being told no risk but then at the same time being told the virus can live for days on surfaces. Hearing that people who self isolate are doing so with their partners (i.e not isolating at all) etc doesn't give me masses of confidence that they're doing what they can.

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 13/02/2020 16:46

Because what is optimal medically is at odds with what is optimal economically. Guess which one is more valued politically.

Emmabryant123 · 13/02/2020 16:49

Where else do you expect people to self isolate ?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 13/02/2020 16:49

Sorry, pressed enter too quicklY.

Because they dint want to upset the travel industry.,

MissPoldark · 13/02/2020 16:50

It is understood that she arrived in an Uber, but the driver was traced and told there is no risk because the journey took less than 15 minutes.

Absolutely insane. Where is the evidence for this “15 minutes”? The driver should self isolate as a precaution.

Emmabryant123 · 13/02/2020 16:54

Unfortunately many can't afford to.
We wouldn't be able to pay our rent if my oh had to take two weeks off

MyHairIsSoapy · 13/02/2020 16:55

Bonkers that the NHS think a taxi driver in a confined space isn’t a possible carrier and that first degree contacts are allowed to have their partners come and go. It’s just going to spread.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 16:55

At home (if they can be trusted to do so) but then if they have had contact with their partners, the partners should be isolating too.

ifonly4 · 13/02/2020 16:56

Miss Poldark - agree, it only takes a second for something to cough, touch something, so unless you're sure you didn't cough in someone's presence or touch something!!!

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 16:57

Unfortunately your ability to pay your rent is not as important as people’s lives

This is why an outbreak is inevitable. If the government were determined in the confine and delay tactic, they need to think about this. It's not going to be all skiing doctors. Something like 1 in 5 adults has less than £100 savings.

Reading this thread has got me feeling beside myself with stress and anxiety.

Now that they have passed a law to allow them to forcibly quarantine people if necessary, people wouldn’t get a choice, whether they could afford to do without pay or not.

I’m not sure if there’s any monitoring of the self isolating people or not?

OneOfTheGrundys · 13/02/2020 17:08

lots of children getting high temps and hallucinating, with quite a bad cough and then recovering quite quickly.
Yes DS2 had this, along with my neighbours son and two ladies I work/run with. He was really poorly, left with a really grotty throat and no voice.
WRT Covid19 I just feel that it’s going to be everywhere. It’s out now. The best I can do is keep us all well fed, exercised and clean-handed and away from busy busy places over half term.
That’s it really. Fatalistic but calmer now.

halcyondays · 13/02/2020 17:09

Haven’t some countries banned all flights from China?

Others are taking peoples temperatures at the airport.

In the UK you get off the plane and they hand you a leaflet which is just feeble.
