Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

No, I'm not. My medicine prescription is for 1 year and the pill prescription is valid for 2 years (but I have to pay for the meds and appointments myself).

I personally would cancel a trip to London (or equivalent) because I have young Dc (one with SN) who put their hands over everything and then lick them. It seems daft to go when it's not really necessary. Touristy places are more likely to have a larger volume of people, many of whom have travelled from abroad, and as far as I'm concerned airports are likely places for spread. That's a different situation than going from home to work and back again and maybe popping into the shop on the way.

There are no problems. yet
I’ve flown to Paris for a meeting and next week we’ll be flying for our skiing holiday. Wasn't there just a case of someone being infected on a ski holiday?!

Parker231 · 13/02/2020 08:22

The risk to the public is low - as stated on Gov.uk. Life continues as normal which includes living and travelling around London and going on holiday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2020 08:27

I commute fairly regularly on overcrowded trains. I wouldn't say that being a visitor is more risky than commuting in twice a day.

I'm not changing any of my habits other than using hand gel as soon as I get off, though I'm very tempted to start handing tissues out!

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 08:29

This is preppers. We are not going to shut up just because someone extremely knowledgeable and to be believed above all others Hmm comes on and tells us the risk is low. You're wasting your breath, we are still going to discuss it and how to take sensible precautions so perhaps best to frequent a different board.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 08:30

Likewise at present, although I'm not booking any holidays just yet.

Parker231 · 13/02/2020 08:39

Hasa - I’m all for being sensible and prepping where necessary but some of the assumptions here are incredibly creative.

pitcherscat · 13/02/2020 09:01

I've just been reading a BBC article about how PHE are trying to contact trace anybody who has been within 2m (6ft) of the new London case and the Brighton case for >15mins, and it states 'this includes people who were within 2 rows of them on flights into the UK'. I had assumed they would be contacting everybody on the plane? I would have thought that several hours in the confined space of a plane, with recirculated air and shared toilets, would leave more people at risk than just those in the surrounding 2 rows?

ofwarren · 13/02/2020 09:09

So would I pitchers! That is shocking

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2020 09:11

The official definition of being in close contact is within 2m for more than 15 min.

So Ive spent a considerable amount of time over the past week in central London in close contact with people. How on earth am I supposed to know if the lady was on the train, tube or theatre near me if they don't give out any details...

Statistically the odds are tiny, so I'm not at all concerned. It's just that there's a logic fail there.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 13/02/2020 09:11

Be careful you don’t get mistaken for the tissue beggars on the tube.

Grin
OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2020 09:13

Grin that's hilarious! I was bedraggled enough this morning that I could have been mistaken for one!!!

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 13/02/2020 09:15

Just refrain from giving out handwritten notes with the Russians and you should be OK.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/02/2020 09:15

I think, if you don't have to travel, are not particularly committed to travel, then not travelling makes it better for everyone who does have to. Fewer contacts, slightly less crowded, etc. Not a big deal if you decide not to.

Likewise, if you have not booked a holiday, you could postpone until later in the year or do something different this year. Cancelling existing holidays can be decided later unless you are not too fussed about losing the deposit. It would be a shame to cancel if it all fizzles out or is restricted to a few cases in the ROTW.

Depends entirely on your circumstances.

Listen to WHO advice.

KundaliniRising · 13/02/2020 09:17

Still no data from Africa, Russia and South America.

I find this rather worrying Sad

floatygoat · 13/02/2020 09:22

Why would you cancel a trip to London? Millions of us live here. There are no problems. I travel on the tube most days, eat in restaurants, I’ve flown to Paris for a meeting and next week we’ll be flying for our skiing holiday.

There is no reason to make changes to your plans.

There seems to be a massive failure in a lot of people's thinking. Do these people not know that at one point in China there were only 9 [known] cases of this virus? That it takes time to spread and take effect, that there will be more cases confirmed, that it has a long inoculation period....that everything will look very different to how, in the weeks and months ahead?

Duh.

floatygoat · 13/02/2020 09:23

* Everything will look different to now* in the weeks and months ahead I meant

ofwarren · 13/02/2020 09:24

I was thinking that kundalini I don't believe did one second that there are absolutely no cases in those countries

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/02/2020 09:29

I think a lot of people will be trying to reduce contact with others. This will for some include avoiding unnecessary trips to large cities.

DS1 is going on a residential theatre trip to London in a few weeks' time. I will reassess closer to the time whether there is risk. We simply don't know what the numbers will be like at that stage but I certainly wouldn't call it off yet.

Delatron · 13/02/2020 09:35

I’m not thinking of cancelling a holiday in April or May. We will know over the next few weeks how this will pan out. It will peak probably around March and then hopefully warmer temperatures will see it off.

With regards to big towns. I flew to a ski resort on exactly the same dates as Brighton man. Thinking how much safer I was being up in the mountains than a big city. It was a different resort but it shows you can’t quite tell where you will pick this virus up.

I’m boosting all our immune systems with probiotics, vitamin D, C loads of fruit and veg and telling the children to aim to wash hands twenty times a day and the minute they get in from school.

Destinysdaughter · 13/02/2020 09:46

Apparently the virus was first discovered in 2005!

Morning Round Up

1
Singapore says it is vulnerable to COVID - they screen all outgoing travelers (but with long incubation periods and asymptomatic carriers this can’t stop spread 100%)

I work in healthcare and saw a patient who had been on holiday to Bali in January. She had a fever, flu like symptoms and a cough...marvellous.

SlayB · 13/02/2020 09:52

@NaturalBornWoman I'm glad you agree.

Are we not out of the EU now ? As in we have to abide by the laws of freedom of movement ?

I'm just worried if the SHTF health tourists will be flocking here we need to turn them away or stop flights from Asia.

One option is to please have an official health point screening at airports not just giving them a 111 leaflet !

Also I wondered why the naysayers on a Prepping thread think why are we having coronavirus priority assessment pods. Just look at the path of one man and his infection rate over Sussex.

SlayB · 13/02/2020 09:55

@Burpeesshmurpees So vile aren't they ?
