Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

I've a sealed panic room in my home which I'm very grateful I had installed now.

ofwarren · 12/02/2020 18:41

News says there is going to be an official announcement on the London case. I hope they tell people the movements of the woman so people can decide whether they think they may have had contact. It won't be as easy as the Brighton ones.

AlohaMolly · 12/02/2020 18:54

outnoutthere a sealed panic room is the stuff of my dreams! I felt sick when I read that about a confirmed case in London. Sad

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2020 18:57

I have come home with a bottle of surgical spirit and a mini spray bottle. Boots was out of Milton.

AlohaMolly · 12/02/2020 18:59

Where will the official announcement be? I’d like to watch and to make DP watch, because he isn’t listening to me!

AmelieTaylor · 12/02/2020 19:03

I have a clear plastic/rubber 🤷🏻‍♀️ case on my phone so that’ll be getting soaked in miltons to start with, handled with gel and the screen wiped with Injection site wipes.

But frankly, I’m far less worried about my phone than handrails/doors/trolleys or anything else. My phone lives in myhand/pocket etc.

I know it could pick something up in the air, but it’s far from the most risky thing in my life.

Another case just announced on the BBC female just flown in from china

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/02/2020 19:06

Ah ok sorry the london case is the woman from china

wheresmymojo · 12/02/2020 19:10

Good news for preggos

Small sample, but in 9 cases studied where pregnant women had COVID - all turned out well.

Fingers crossed on this one.

That's good news about pregnant women.
I wipe my phone once a day with Dettol wipes. Nobody else touches it and im meticulous in washing and antibaccing my hands so I can't imagine that my phone is that bad to be honest.

NaturalBornWoman · 12/02/2020 19:17

Did they actually say just flown in?

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/02/2020 19:21

A woman who flew into London from China a few days ago is being treated for coronavirus, bringing the total number of UK cases to nine.
Sources say she developed symptoms after landing at Heathrow, called NHS 111 and then tested positive.

From BBC website

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 12/02/2020 19:24

@outnoutthere wait, what? An actual real panic room? We need much more detail about this...

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/02/2020 19:29

presumably they are now goign to need to quarantine everyone on that flight

TipseyTorvey · 12/02/2020 19:40

I'm a bit curious about the prison cases. Rumour has it there are three being tested but that was a few days ago. How long does it take to get the results back? I have a suspicion they want to avoid a prison riot. It's quite close to me so I'm checking for updates.

Nicecupofcoco · 12/02/2020 19:40

@wheresmymojo thanks for that info! I'm pregnant and that's been my main concern, well that and my toddler!

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/02/2020 19:48

i think the prison cases were negative

FelicityFebruary · 12/02/2020 19:49

Where do you find surgical spirit?

Perhaps my nearest Boots is too small?

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/02/2020 19:50

i got surgical spirit on amazon

wheresmymojo · 12/02/2020 19:52

@Nicecupofcoco

Children have also been confirmed as only getting the milder end of symptoms Smile

whatdoyouthinkyouknow · 12/02/2020 19:53

For surgical spirit, ask at the counter, it's always hidden away somewhere.

Boots had lots today.

AriellaBella · 12/02/2020 19:54

I feel really cross about this latest case. If it is true that she flew in a few days ago, then our government are entirely inept and to blame. Why are there still flights coming in when the risk is so high?

AvocadoOwl · 12/02/2020 19:55

I was just thinking the same @AriellaBella. Now there are hundreds of exposed passengers on the plane to track down who'll no doubt just be asked to self isolate.

FelicityFebruary · 12/02/2020 19:59

Thank you Hasa and whatdoyou!
