Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

I see that some news outlets are suggesting that that prisoner moved from Thailand is unlikely to have picked it up there because he arrived over 14 days ago and there have been no other cases in Thai prisons.

Either way let's hope it's not an officially confirmed case.

bellinisurge · 12/02/2020 10:31

As a person with MS, my prepping strategy is to hunker down at home or follow hand hygiene best practice when I am out. I'm probably pretty rubbish at doing the latter but I give it a shot. I cannot possibly have better knowledge than health authorities at this stage as to the extent the virus is spreading in this country.
If I contract any viral infection it is potentially more serious for me because of the MS. Which is why anti-vaxxers piss me off so much with the "I don't follow the rules" mentality. There is no herd immunity in my area and I have never had measles - I'm one of those people who medically can't have MMR. The point I am trying to make is that viruses are a daily risk for me and will be for the rest of my life.
If I have to hunker down and stay in, I will and am prepared to. Otherwise, I would rather listen to official advice about sensible hand hygiene and keep going out and about.

HOW MANY CAUGHT IT?

Coronavirus A&E medic treated patients for TWO DAYS while infected – as ‘pregnant’ nurse quarantined

User1775564212 · 12/02/2020 10:35

I think the Thai jail guy had been confirmed

User1775564212 · 12/02/2020 10:36

Sorry no it hasn’t!

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 12/02/2020 10:39

I don't think it's going to be true much longer that we can trace everyone who has been in contact with the virus. The confirmed case of an HCP from Worthing A&E is said to have been treating patients in the two days immediately prior to their diagnosis (what their working pattern was before that hasn't been stated), so it seems quite unlikely that that won't result in further infections in people who have meantime either been out and about in the community or have been in the hospital being treated by other HCPs who have also been treating other patients, etc etc. It will spread exponentially after that. I'd love to be wrong.

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 12/02/2020 10:40

Oh sorry, crosspost with ofwarren.

ofwarren · 12/02/2020 10:43

It's not a cross post eagle mine was just a link and the headline copy and pasted. You elaborated for those who don't want to click on the link.
I dread to even think how many people that person treated in A&E. They will all be easy to trace with being booked in but lots will have been admitted and will be on a ward somewhere.. I wouldn't fancy being a patient in that hospital right now.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 12/02/2020 10:43

What's this Worthing HCP's relationship to the other Brighton cases (or is there none)? Or is it just coincidence that he's in the same area?

Agree with @EagleVisionSquirrelWork that I think we're starting to reach the tipping point of what is possible in terms of tracing people from here on out. I think it's only a matter of days before we see an outbreak in London at least, given the numbers of professionals that commute from Brighton to London.

AvocadoOwl · 12/02/2020 10:45

Agreed Eagle.

I am willing to bet that if a cross section of the population in the SE were to be randomly tested now plenty of cases would pop up.

floatygoat · 12/02/2020 10:48

I have pulled my kids out of school, and I'm not even in Brighton. I've just told the school they have d &v to keep them off my back til half term. I'm teaching them at home.
Plenty of the parents commute to London and there are surely many people harbouring this virus using public transport there etc (virus can live on train poles for up to 9 days)...it's only a matter of time before cases are confirmed. It's now apparent that the inoculation period can last up to 24 days.

I'd rather over react than under react as pp have said. Do not trust the gov or schools to make the right decisions at this point.

ofwarren · 12/02/2020 10:51

Fair play floaty. You do what you think is right.
It's only a few days till half term anyway. I'm sure we will understand the situation more by that point.

floatygoat · 12/02/2020 10:52

Thanks @ofwarren ... just waiting for people to wake up. My mum thinks I'm a raving loon but she just hasn't looked into the facts as much as we have. People can carry on laughing....just give it a few weeks.

Hopefully I'm wrong though.

AvocadoOwl · 12/02/2020 10:54

Not only that @BridgetJonesDaiquiri but spread to London means spread everywhere. We live miles away in the Midlands and my husband commutes into London daily on the train/tube.

We argued a bit about it last night actually. I asked him to remember to wash his hands when he got home and he scoffed and called me hysterical. I was rather sleep deprived after a night shift so his response was a bit like a red rag to a bull! How following advice given by WHO and the NHS is being 'hysterical' I don't know but I think I'd choose being hysterical over sticking my head in the sand and taking needless risks. How hard can it be to wash your hands after being on a train?! I wash mine when I come in the house anyway, it's not difficult! 🙄

Sorry - just seen someone already posted this.

I haven't looked at the news this morning and started to do a morning round up of general news and then realised shit was getting real on the South Coast.

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/02/2020 10:57

Study in Japan saying that half of the transmission cases happen when patient 1 is not showing any symptoms whatsoever.

That is really not good.

AvocadoOwl · 12/02/2020 10:57

Was the A&E worker linked to Walsh?

ofwarren · 12/02/2020 10:58

I haven't seen any connection to Walsh from the Worthing case.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 12/02/2020 10:58

HasaDiga.... thanks - I have loads of bottles of it from a previous holiday. I'll add some surgical spirits to them all.

To the person talking about toilets - if there's tissue for hand drying, I use that over my hand to open the door. If not I get some toilet roll or pull my cuff inside out to open it.

floatygoat · 12/02/2020 11:00

@AvocadoOwl this is the problem, people just don't believe it til it happens to them, when it's too late! And so the virus can spread with abandon...
