Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

@SlayB I was referring to PP Lemon not using lemon for CV.

preponderings · 11/02/2020 14:14

I also read about colour coded family towels. Which would be useful only in an outbreak situation.

I think towels are irrelevant. Once one of you in the house has it, I think either you'll get it or you won't. Unless you live in a mansion and have a floor each or something! We already have colour coded towels Halo so the DC can't argue over them

ofwarren · 11/02/2020 14:19

Colour coded towels are good for things like the herpes virus or hand foot and mouth. Once coronavirus is in the house though, there is no escaping the aerosol effect.

SlayB · 11/02/2020 14:35

One case that Dr John Campbell looked at was a family the father had it and gave it to the son they started with D&V then the fever rather than the cough the wife did not catch it.

Advice from CDC
You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, or bedding with other people in your home. After using these items, they should be washed thoroughly with soap and water.

Luckily we have three loos two showers rooms. Also a good utility that could be used as another kitchen. If it is proven to be aerosol then there is the motorhome we can borrow from in laws.

Communion at church is shared cup
It’s ok, my mum says you can’t possibly get sick from the communion cup because it’s blessed and God wouldn’t allow it to make you ill. Plus they wipe the rim and the alcohol kills any remaining germs. Presumably she’d be more than happy to drink after someone with a confirmed case of coronavirus because God will protect her.

PinkGinAndTacos · 11/02/2020 14:36

well people in my office officially think I'm nuts! Tried passing on a small amount of info from this thread but I think they thought I'd lost the plot. Admittedly I do suffer from anxiety and OCD thoughts so they might have a point, but I'd rather have the peace of mind that I have provisions for my kids should the worst happen.
Is there any news on the person at Bath Uni? I can't see any updates online, but my colleague is convinced it has been confirmed that he has it.

Notstrongandstable · 11/02/2020 14:50

Pink gin - when friends send me links I pretend I haven't already seen the information, so I don't look completely obsessed😬

bellinisurge · 11/02/2020 14:52

I'm a rubbish Catholic (lapsed now but used to go a bit) and having made my first communion over 40 years ago, I have never once taken communion wine nor has dh or either of our Catholic parents.
It's not obligatory.
Unless that's a cofE thing that I wouldn't get. I assume from your use of the word "feck" that you were a Catholic too. Blush

AriellaBella · 11/02/2020 14:53

I am a lapsed Catholic (and a pre-existing germphobe) so when I used to go for communion I used to wipe my hands first. All those germs with all the hand shaking, bleugh.

bellinisurge · 11/02/2020 14:54

I've always hated the hand shaking. I remember a time before ... but I digress.

ifonly4 · 11/02/2020 15:10

Aureum - My Mum reckons we won't suffer so much here as we eat better (says her who just had chips and a banana in the way of vegetable and fruit the day she mentioned it) and have better pharmacy services to buy things from than China. I have no idea where she got that from. Hope you don't take it as an insult, perhaps, we should put our Mums together so they can compare notes.

news.sky.com/story/two-uk-prisoners-being-tested-for-coronavirus-11931564 2 prisoners in UK being tested

ifonly4 · 11/02/2020 15:11

Just seen two prisoners in Oxfordshire are being tested. Hopefully they'll be clear, but if not will be interesting to know the source.

wheresmymojo · 11/02/2020 15:12

The virus has a name - COVID-19 apparently...

@PinkGinAndTacos

The Bath case is definitely not confirmed yet. Still just suspected - no news re: test results.

I mean this would be brilliant but seems...a little optimistic...

"Based on publicly available data, a data model on a recently launched website set up by an ad-hoc group of scientists predicts the number of new, confirmed novel coronavirus cases in China to dwindle to almost nothing in under two weeks.
“The current model predicts a rapid decrease in new, confirmed cases in the next week and virtually no new, confirmed cases by February 23,” said Dr Yi Zou, who is based in the Department of Health and Environmental Sciences at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

Comments from Matt Hancock in Parliament

"The NHS has the capability now to cope with the very highest level of intensity and isolation with 50 cases and the capability to expand that to 500 cases and to do that without an impact on the wider work of the NHS.
But of course, if the number of cases get bigger, then we will need to take further steps and as he knows from his time in my shoes, there are extensive plans already in place for how that should happen if we reach that eventuality."

Very baffled by prisoners being suspect cases!

COVID19 · 11/02/2020 15:46

I know, wonder what contact they have had???

justdeckingthehalls1 · 11/02/2020 15:51

IfOnly, the source of the prison infection is the same bloke! I'd love to be a fly on the wall of his life. He's definitely getting around

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/02/2020 15:58

I think if the Chinese government are adopting that magical thinking, we can discard their case numbers.

BookofJudith · 11/02/2020 15:58

As I understand it, the Rite of Peace is optional at Mass, and at the priest’s discretion. Unless he’d like his income source curtailed rather sharply and his flock dispatched untimely toward his Heavenly Father, he might do well to refrain from offering the Chalice as well should this virus prove rampant. Elderly people and those with small children often make up large numbers in congregations.

wheresmymojo · 11/02/2020 15:59

Steve sure gets around.

I don't know if the poor bloke will ever live this down
