Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Can this guy donate his antibodies? ( semi serious joke)

Oliphantitus · 11/02/2020 11:13

Actually you guys are on to something, my mum gets a bag of potatoes from a farm, I will find out from her. I have noticed that my mum is basically prepped without the title!

BlackeyedSusan · 11/02/2020 11:15

Morrisons sell unwashed potatoes in paper sacks.

Morning round up...

Even stricter quarantine measures put in place in Wuhan: https://www.shine.cn/news/nation/2002111759/

This includes ‘sealing off all residential communities’ and any buildings with a case will be ‘closed and strictly managed’.

More evidence of multiple negative tests before testing positive (what does this mean for those confirmed negative in the UK? I’m optimistic that PHE are doing multiple tests and that they are self isolated)

https://www.shine.cn/news/nation/2002111759/

A second GP surgery in Brighton was confirmed as closed yesterday - Deneway - which is a branch of the same medical centre

PHE are contacting ‘up to 15’ patients who have been in contact with the 2 healthcare workers.

I think this was mentioned already yesterday (?) - a student at Bath Uni is being tested due to suspected case of CV (could turn out to be nothing)

Interesting article about modelling the international spread

Just been to tbe supermarket. Grr. Failed at keeping hands off face... Got a hair in my mouth...

Got to unload the car and hump it all up two or three flights of stairs.

Topped up on part baked bread, wraps, veg, tinned tomatoes, carrots and mushrooms, fruit juice, fruits ds will eat to try and build him up a bit. Wanted more wholemeal pasta but they had sold out. Also sold out of OTC meds. Bought soap, and biological laundry liquid and another 24 loo rolls.

Every day I am going to wash banisters and door handles and other frequently touched surfaces.

I want to read up on what is happening in Brighton to think about next steps in the plan.

We have just booked to see DD in a play. Packed theatre.
DC go and stay with GP in-laws.
DC booked to go abroad and on camp.
Dc2 is an unhygienic, soap shy menace.
Communion at church is shared cup... And the fecking shake everybody's hand peace.

Neome · 11/02/2020 11:41

Thank you so much wheresmymojo

Does anyone know, re ocular transmission, if using a medicated or saline eyewash would be at all helpful - given we cant scrub our eyeballs with soap and water or alcohol gel! Would it potentially reduce viral load? Feel free to laugh if I'm being ridiculous.

GothMummy · 11/02/2020 11:43

Good idea to frequently wash down surfaces such as bannisters @BlackeyedSusan

I bet most people on these threads know about Flylady www.flylady.net but just in case, she has really good prepping type advice in her "Control Journal" section which is a file of written down information left in a visible place so that in your absence someone else could run the household (including info about kids schools, useful numbers, pets, medications etc). My serious worry is that I will be ill or quarentined and everything at home will fall apart without me, as I do everything.....

Flylady also has good advice about preparing for evacuation (I think they must have more extreme weather events where she lives) some of which is useful and relevant for this. And good practice anyway, look at the floods we had last Autumn, no one expected those....

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 11/02/2020 11:43

Nice to find a sensible thread about nCoV on here at last. There's an epidemic of competitive nonchalance going on on AIBU. I'm not enough degrees of separation away from the poor superspreader guy to be that laid back, and two of my children are school-age and asthmatic. It would be nice to be able to talk in terms of risk and preparedness without being accused of hysteria. Greetings to all. I expect I know some of you from the Brexit prepping threads.

echobench · 11/02/2020 11:43

Is it possible not to receive from the chalice at your church BlackeyedSusan? Alcohol does kill the virus anyway.

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/02/2020 11:45

Surely it would at the point at which you used the eye wash. Im not sure how long it takes for a virus to enter the body through the eye though, I would imagine quite rapidly meaning you'd have to be using an eye wash very frequently?

All though still points to not mixing with other humans any more than necessary though..

echobench · 11/02/2020 11:46

To all the nonchalant types: remember when China had only 10 cases... and look at them now.

ifonly4 · 11/02/2020 11:49

Hasa tinned tomatoes or passata could be useful for making a homemade tomato sauce to go with pasta, so don't rule that out. I intend to freeze some onion and have garlic, herbs, chilli which I would add to mind. Then anything else on the go, frozen peppers, canned sweetcorn, tinned/dried pulses could be mixed in or topped with cheese.

Neome · 11/02/2020 11:50

Your church communion wine is 60% alcohol echobench? Wink

Must do some work. Good to know thread is here Smile

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/02/2020 11:52

I think you might mean justmyname Smile I could invite everyone on the thread to stay for a fortnight and still have plenty left over to feed everyone from my brexit stash Grin

JustMyName · 11/02/2020 11:57

Thanks. I might get some jars of pasta sauce and pasta.

TipseyTorvey · 11/02/2020 12:15

Idaho mashed potato is surprisingly good! Bought it for the brexit stash then used it up. Very good on fish pie /cottage pie and nothing like smash. I'm getting a load in as it lasts a while and takes up very little space. I'm sure it's got some weird ingredients in but I won't care if it's just about calorie feeding.

BlackeyedSusan · 11/02/2020 12:31

A couple of people on a Brexit thread found the Idaho potato very salty.

justasking111 · 11/02/2020 12:39

Those poor people on the cruise ship 135 now, quarantine may be extended.

wheresmymojo · 11/02/2020 12:39

Another local paper article on the Brighton outbreak.

Large pinch of salt warning!

This article is quite hyped up - do keep in mind that local newspapers like this will want to make the most of sales whilst in the spotlight and the more hyperbole the better for that...

The time to worry is when the government slap a D type notice on the media. I do know of one D notice many moons ago.

Anyone noticed the deafening silence from the government here and in the USA.

wheresmymojo · 11/02/2020 12:45

Good prepping point picked up from Reddit.

Don't forget good intensive moisturising hand cream (probably something with a neutral smell so DH's and DS's won't baulk at using it).

With the increased hand washing and use of more chemical cleaners and hand sanitisers with high alcohol levels your skin may become very dry and even start to crack.

So plenty of good hand cream needed - I would recommend that Norwegian Formula one by Neutrogena.

wheresmymojo · 11/02/2020 12:45

Just

What is a D notice?

OP posts:
ofwarren · 11/02/2020 12:49

Yes hand cream is important. When my son was in hospital for 6 months my hands were so cracked and bleeding. It happens really quickly too. Mine are shriveled up at the minute 🙈

preponderings · 11/02/2020 12:49

BlackeyedSusan Style saw me and started running in the opposite direction Grin. Needs must. I can't carry it easily so I don't have much choice!

Well, that was an expensive morning. Not in the UK so can't buy meds in the supermarket. Got some Vicks (£17.40 how does that compare to the UK?) a second hand gel (£13.05) , rehydration salts (£6.37 for 10 sachets) and a pack of 10 ibuprofen (£8.86). Added some lentils in (no idea if the DC will eat them!) and got some milk powder.

Planning on getting some flour tomorrow and dried yeast. Putting washing powder, tinned fruit, tinned toms, stock and pasta, toilet paper, soap and hand cream on the list for DH to get at the weekend. That's all stuff we usually buy. Then I don't think I can do much more really. We would cope for 2 weeks, longer if one of us went to the petrol station every couple of days. Just wait and see. They've quarantined someone in the city about 25 minutes away today.

Having said that, we live in a block of flats so probably we'd get it anyway if someone else in the building does!

ofwarren · 11/02/2020 12:51

What country are you that Vicks is £17?? It's about £2.50 here!
