Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

I'm very concerned about the Chinese response. It doesn't seem commensurate or proportional to what we are being told about the virus.

NaturalBornWoman · 04/02/2020 07:08

That their new 'hospital' has bars on the windows is of concern for sure. I'm avoiding Twitter as it's too hard to tell what's real but over the past few days I've noticed some of the more worrying aspects are now in the mainstream press and even BBC, just hints.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/02/2020 07:55

A man has died in Hong Kong, he was 39. He had fled from Wuhan. It looks like he has infected his Mum and now the rest of his family are in quarantine.

That means that the two people outside of China who have died were 44 and 39. I suppose that's probably because the younger people to contract the illness were able to stay well enough for long enough to get away from Wuhan whereas the elderly and those with chronic illnesses who are most likely to die from coronavirus are immobilised by it pretty quickly, right?

Legoandloldolls · 04/02/2020 08:08

Looking at Twitter has freaked me right out. I'm sure a lot of it isn't accurate but even so, something isn't adding up in China any more.

I think I'm going to avoid Twiiter too. So much fake news that you can even guess at the truth anymore. I do suspect that in the future we will hear that China is doing something underhand with people trying to get word out about lack of testing and the health system being overwhelmed. I dont think they was dragging that man off to treat him but maybe he was a proper criminal u der arrest? Or maybe he was on socail media and needed shutting up?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2020 08:11

I'm listening to a live stream from the China National health commission. Even they are talking about capacity limits in terms of hospital beds and protective gear. They've also spoken about the inaccuracy of tests (one chap was tested four times before he tested positive).

Simultaneously they are talking about a sustained slowing in growth rate. But to me taken with the overwhelming numbers. suggests partially a cap in ability to test. I think though that keeping people apart will be helping slow things.

Once 'social isolation' is relaxed, won't some of those who haven't been infected, become infected? Or are they going to wait until there are very few cases?

ILoveTimeTravelling · 04/02/2020 08:27

I seriously think that our Gov is not doing nearly enough and the response so far has been terrible. Bringing possibly infected people back, I watched the plane land and the door opened and the ground staff were not wearing masks and actually shook hands with the people on the plane! and the coach drivers not wearing protective gear, they were told to isolate themselves but one of them was seen socialising in a hotel bar the same night, and what about their families, they are going to carry it around to work, supermarkets, etc.

The Gov has been very lax about this and as a result, I fear we will see a lot of deaths when this could have been avoided with a proper response. I am so angry about it and very afraid.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2020 08:39

I've just had a text from my gp surgery saying that if I develop flu symptoms and have been to China in the last 14 days call 111

MynameisJune · 04/02/2020 08:46

Does anyone know where the German cases are? My sil lives over there with my niece.

Twitter is full of fake news and I’m taking those videos of the hospital lightly. The ones I’ve seen have all been of the same ward, which for all anyone knows could be the special isolation ward, the whole hospital may not look like that.

AvocadoOwl · 04/02/2020 08:49

Really wish I hadn't looked on Twitter. Terrifying stuff on there.

I just hope it's like swine flu whereby the initial death rate figures turned out to be hugely exaggerated because so many were mildly ill and didn't seek treatment.

AvocadoOwl · 04/02/2020 08:52

German cases are in Starnberg, a really pretty town on a lake near the alps in Bavaria. The patients are in Munich hospital.

OriginalBleach · 04/02/2020 09:11

@Skyejuly

That is very scary. Germany is extremely close too

The Germans are dealing with the outbreak head on, transparently and efficiently. They have 12 cases, who are being treated in accordance with public health guidelines.

I do not believe for a second tat the UK has only 2 cases and assume that the DoH are not tracking people who have travelled from China in the last few weeks and also don't bother finding people who have been in contact with the Chinese student and his mother in York. Whilst 12 NCV patients in Germany sounds worrying, at least they are kept away from the public and the virus is being contained.

Many more people travel between China and the UK than other European countries. There is no way we have only two cases, the difference is that we don't know about them so they are able to infect other people. I still don't understand how the bus drivers did not wear protective clothing

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/02/2020 09:13

Just came to a walk in centre due to myself and youngest being under the weather. I'd said my reasons why I'm here and when I said my son had developed a barking cough she immediately asked if we've traveled in the last 14 days.

Safe to say they are on the ball but also quite worrying at the same time.

SebandAlice · 04/02/2020 09:20

Does anyone know why the death rate still stands at 2%? Just looking at the latest figures for example in Hubei. 414 deaths. 389 recovered. 13522 infected. Even in the unlikely event all of the remaining infected recover the death rate is higher than 2%.

NemophilistRebel · 04/02/2020 09:46

I was wondering the same as if you were calculating death rate vs recovered it’s more than 50% death rate.

We don’t know yet whether those thousands infected will recover or die yet

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/02/2020 09:49

I’m not worried about the German cases. I agree, it’s about the infected here. There were Regular flights from Wuhan, I cannot believe there are only two cases in the UK.

Upherefordancing · 04/02/2020 10:10

FourTea the Guardian reported that the 39 year man who died in Hong Kong had an underlying health problem.

AmelieTaylor · 04/02/2020 10:12

We are never going to know the ‘death rate’
from China, because they’ll never give accurate figures to the outside world, & I doubt they’ll even know themselves if the reports are even vaguely true.

Hospitals do not need bars on windows & ill people don’t require several people to manhandle them into ambulances.

We won’t know until somewhere reliable, like Germany, has figures and I’m hoping they don’t get enough cases to get statistics

I am developing nasty splinters on my bum - outside of Wuhan cases will be isolated & hopefully the vast majority will recover v as travel is relaxed in China it will spread like wildfire & we will all be at risk because of the lack of obvious symptoms early on.

teta · 04/02/2020 10:13

64 people have been admitted to hospital in HK with Corona virus symptoms. One individual diagnosed apparently was working in a shop with symptoms for some days.
There's more information, videoing and a Chinese pr exercise on the newly built hospital's today.
English boarding schools have banned half term visits to the affected areas, with the possibility of this being continued over Easter.

OriginalBleach · 04/02/2020 10:19

Hospitals do not need bars on windows & ill people don’t require several people to manhandle them into ambulances. Clutching at straws but I suppose convicts can also fall ill and may have to be treated in a more secure ward?

FourTeaFallOut · 04/02/2020 10:21

That's interesting, none of the reports I read 5 hours ago mentioned that. Thanks upherefordancing

ofwarren · 04/02/2020 10:24

14 suspected cases in Brazil, I've just seen via s Brazilian news outlet on twitter

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 10:24

There are more and more of these clips now showing multiple bodies...

I really wish we could trust the CCP more.

And first case in Belgium

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 10:31

Singapore now up to 24 cases including several which haven't travelled from China.

Their Health Minister is warning they're likely to have a local epidemic, he says:

"Despite our best efforts, Singapore will see extensive community spread. At that point, we will need to consider additional measures to reduce human-to-human interactions, such as cancelling mass gatherings, suspending schools, and paring down non-essential care services, to slow the spread of the disease,”

Presumably the students have been at school since the start of January and the term holiday after Easter will be June??? ( I'm guessing - I don't know anything about boarding school) but, if I'm right, that's a long time to go without seeing your Mum and Dad -even for the most hardened teenager, poor buggers.
