Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

This doesn't make for good reading:

FourTeaFallOut · 02/02/2020 21:06

Oh yes, 20% of the known cases, that was sloppy of me, sorry.

Parker231 · 02/02/2020 21:08

My colleague arrived back from China this weekend after spending CNY with her family in Shanghai. No problem with the flights but everyone’s temperature was checked before they boarded. China seems to be doing a good job of trying to check any health risks of those leaving the country.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/02/2020 21:35

Everything coming out of china now suggests that this is far, far worse than the official figures show. Its really worrying.

SebandAlice · 02/02/2020 22:11

I think it is so worrying. The recovered rate is still lower than the death rate.

Skyejuly · 02/02/2020 22:15

The news is not good at all. I worry for the kids.

MynameisJune · 02/02/2020 22:15

According to this link the recovered rate is higher than the death rate now

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/02/2020 22:24

@NearlySchoolTimeAgain. that NY times article is very worrying. If true, that means huge numbers of cases aren't making the official statistics so we are really working in th dark.

MoonlightMistletoe · 02/02/2020 23:08

I know it's not a news report or anything but this man speaking his story is rather concerning. Shock

RhubarbTea · 02/02/2020 23:09

I just read the NYT article and I agree, it's really concerning. I also read elsewhere that they are cremating people direct from the hospitals without going through the proper identification procedures first so the death toll is likely far, far higher than they are reporting.

RhubarbTea · 02/02/2020 23:10

Moonlight I watched that vid last night and sent it to a friend, who said if it happened here it would probably be just as big a fuck up. Perhaps he's partly right. The sheer numbers would overwhelm medical services.

wheresmymojo · 02/02/2020 23:53

It's pretty much confirmed now that bodies are being sent straight to cremation.

Plus - when we know they don't have enough tests for the living I doubt they're using them on the dead.

So I think with a lot of severe cases just being told to self-quarantine the deaths and confirmed cases are being hugely underreported.

This has come from so many sources now I don't think it can be in any doubt TBH.

I was just thinking how horrendous it must be for those that are ill and having to walk miles to a hospital, wait in lengthy queues and still possibly get sent home.

Thinking about last time I had the flu (so not even as bad as pneumonia) and I struggled to get out of bed, go downstairs and make myself something to eat let alone dress and walk for miles Sad

BlackeyedSusan · 03/02/2020 01:28

Which may explain why some people are dying on the street.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/02/2020 01:29

( if they are as some reports suggest up thread)

Dyrne · 03/02/2020 06:18

wheresmymojo I agree - the official reporting figures just don’t make sense when you see the drastic measures the Chinese government are taking - building an entire hospital, ordering immediate cremations etc. There must be so many more “unconfirmed” cases here (as in, an order of magnitude more).

TheOrangeFox · 03/02/2020 07:03

I'm getting increasingly worried.

Parker231 · 03/02/2020 07:17

I think China have reacted so strongly is in part due to them being criticised previously over their handling of other outbreaks.

Only two cases in the UK from a population of 60m.

floatygoat · 03/02/2020 07:18

Hello. I haven't done any prepping but I am going to now. Nappies, rice etc, calpol etc I'm going to buy in bulk I think....

I have two kids at primary school and a 4 month old baby. We live in rural south west but I am worried about sending the kids to school as pp have pointed out by the time cases appear it will be too late because of the incubation period.

LesLavandes · 03/02/2020 07:21

I am in Gatwick right now. Nobody is wearing a mask

Dyrne · 03/02/2020 07:29

Parker231 I’m not ready to put on my tin foil hat just yet; but I don’t think the Chinese government would have done all this just for PR. There’s “putting up a strong response”, and then there’s “building an entire 1000 bed hospital in 8 days, with another one soon to be completed”.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/02/2020 07:37

Thankfully it looks like the tests were negative on the evacuation plane that landed in France.

I'd read several days ago that the total number of beds set aside in Wuhan for this were circa 10,000. I can't find the article now to verify that. Even with the extra two hospitals, 11,000 cases in the Hubei province must mean that they are totally saturated.

RevolutionofourTime · 03/02/2020 07:40

I’m at Heathrow, seen a few people wearing masks but it’s a very small number. On our flight from HK last night the mask rate was nearly 100% including cabin crew. Rather unfortunate that the toilets stopped working and no one could wash their hands (on a 12 hour flight). But we’ve made it here at least.

Boots at Heathrow is limiting hand sanitizer purchase to one per passenger and keeping all stocks behind the tills. Seems sensible to me.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/02/2020 07:53

Me too. That's enough for a flight.

Today is Sainsbury's for antibac. Brexit stash is running low. Only got about 5 left. Crown Grin. Also vaseline and cheap bleach.
