Prepping for brexit

Ive just started getting some bits together ready for brexit. As a food scientist I am very aware of how much produce comes into the country and the resources needed to get things around the country. Im also aware of the chain and how everything is ‘just in time’ And a delay in the chain could lead to serious shortages and price rises.

This really worries me as there is 5 of us to feed. So, what non food essentials do you think I should also consider? We are not prepping for huge disaster just 6 months or so. I’ve got things like toiletries, loo roll etc. Anything else?

@TomVeiga , nice to see you on the Preppers topic with useful observations. Here's some tips you might like to try if you get bored- go on Style and Beauty and tell everyone they are wasting their money. Or go on The Doghouse and tell them that dogs are shite and cats are awesome. Or go on Mental Health and tell people to just get over it.
I did an I'm a Prepper AMA yonks ago so maybe you could find that and reactivate it with one of your useful observations.
Just so you know, you don't have to be a prepper to prep for Brexit. There are threads all over MN about it. Not just in the Prepper topic. Why not contribute to them in the valuable way you have done here.

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 12:10

Tom What makes you think I haven't?

In reality I don't think any of those are likely.

I could build a nuclear bunker in the woods. I'm not going to because that would be entirely disproportionate.

I have prepared for a labour government whacking vat on school fees. I have prepared for a labour government increasing income tax. I have also looked into the land tax proposals.

Otherwise in all of those other highly unlikely scenarios my preps are limited to staying at home and hoping for the best. I have food and other things needed to avoid us leaving the house eg household goods, sustainable heating source. My house is isolated with good security so realistic option would be to lie low and hope for the best. But I am really not going to waste my time thinking about things which are so unlikely to ever affect me.

Brexit issues on the other hand have the potential to impact on normal people very quickly. I am unsure why you would think it strange for people to ensure that they have a full pantry and extras. If nothing else its winter FFS and there's snow on the ground.

This really is like saying on Style and beauty "if you can't look like Cindy Crawford what the fuck are you bothering for?!"

RegularShowRules · 17/01/2019 13:24

Tom Just curious how you would prep for a Corbyn govt?!!

AnotherShirtRuined · 17/01/2019 13:46

Yes @TomVeiga, do give us the benefit of your superior knowledge and insight. How should we prepare for a Corbyn government?

Journos fuck off

Also I find it somewhat silly to suggest that because we can't prepare for the most unlikely and extreme events such as nuclear war, preparing for anything probable is pointless. Does this apply to snow or illness as well, or is it just Brexit?

Thanks for your expert opinion Tom. I'll manage though Hmm

I really shouldn't engage since I have work to do but what will potentially stop food getting in is the delay at the borders. Might not happen. Lets hope not. but for the sake of a few tins of beans and some extra loo roll I think its worth anticipating as a potential problem.

My house is fine thanks. But I'm curious as to why you are worrying about houses getting raided if you think having full food cupboards is a mental health issue. I suspect you've watched a few too many movies..

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 14:22

"Who will stop food from entering the Uk"
In a No Deal Brexit, customs, logistics.. boring things like that. I'm sure you're not old enough to remember the petrol strikes as an adult and how that messed up the Just in Time system we rely on. You can't be old enough because you talk like a teenager.
Maybe you remember the Beast from the east. And how that messed with the food distribution network.
You can take the piss out of general Preppers like me all you like. But you are foolish to ignore or scoff at genuine concerns about food distribution and supply with a no Deal Brexit.

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 14:26

I think Corbyn would like me anyway. I have a big vegetable plot, speak Russian and like bearded men.

DwayneDibbly · 17/01/2019 14:28

I'm the main purchaser in a family of three. Have taken Jack Monroe's list as a starting point but am thinking about quantities for a three month period. My DP is a very good cook & excellent at making things last. What seems a reasonable amount of tinned tomatoes, for example?

Thank you for this thread. Others may pour scorn on it but I genuinely don't think it harms to be prepared.

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 14:34

Privyet, cloudtree. I have a little veg garden and hate bearded menGrin

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 14:42

You won't be allowed in his gang then bellini sorry! Grin

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 14:47

I think repeatedly referring to him as a twat on here might disbar me tooGrin

A consignment of food is ordered from overseas (outside of Europe), for the UK. It comes into Rotterdam. Rotterdam is generally the customs point (and set up to do it) but it is coming to the UK so that is no longer the case, it is just a stopping point. So Rotterdam doesn't do the customs checks. It goes onto a ferry to the UK. The UK now has to do the customs checks. The ports get snarled up because we do not have the systems set up to deal with the additional volume. We have supply chain issues.

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 19:57

Do you realise how patronising you sound Tomveiga?

I can only assume you are trying deliberately to wind people up. If you're not interested in prepping then DFOD

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 19:58

And if you talk to people like this in RL then look forward to a lifetime of poor career advancement and limited social activity.

Snugglepumpkin · 17/01/2019 20:48

@DwayneDibbly

Nobody can work it out for you as it's different for every family.

Just need to ask yourself, how many times a week do we eat a meal which uses tinned tomatoes & how many tins in those meals.

It is really worth making a loose meal plan then shopping for that meal plan.

So,
If you use them once a week & use one can in that meal, the answer is simple, three months is 13 weeks so 13 cans.

If you use them 3 times a week & use 2 cans per meal then you'd want 78.

If you don't usually use them, buy one & try it on everyone you plan to feed before committing to having a shedload in the cupboard.

DwayneDibbly · 17/01/2019 20:58

@Snugglepumpkin I know it's really subjective isn't it? But that is really helpful, thank you!

ElyElyOy · 17/01/2019 21:30

@TomVeiga maybe have a chat with the French President then, because he seems to have a concern or 50 million. Although may I kindly suggest you perhaps sort out your attitude first or he may get all Marie Antoinette on your head Wink

Live with it.
