When I found out I was pregnant I stopped drinking immediately and then the morning sickness kicked in and the thought of alcohol sent me running to the loo.

However, now I am over that (thank the Lord!!) and although I am still not drinking per se, I have had a glass of Champagne, two coronas and a glass of red wine spaced over about 11 weeks.

The NHS say that one or two units once or twice a week is acceptable but obviously a lot of people think it is a big no no anyway.

I am interested in what other people are doing and if they feel guilty if they have the odd glass of wine.

I had none during the first trimester. My MS was so bad that the thought of alcohol was enough to send me over the edge. I'm 25+2 now and have 1-2 glasses of wine a week or an Aspalls cider.

I had an INSANE craving for champagne one morning so I went to a champagne bar during my lunch and had a cheeky glass. It was divine.

looking forward to a weekly glass of something saved my sanity throughout two pgs! My midwife told me the none at all edict was basically because the govt thought women too stupid to follow sensible guidelines... the same midwife has a rule 'if you're safe to drive you're perfectly safe to breastfeed' too. I LIKED my midwife
Always remember going to the US for a friend's wedding when I was about 24 wks pg. I had a glass of champagne, obviously, and a good friend (American) of mine looked at it gone out and said 'oh! How very - European!' Still make me giggle to this day

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 09/07/2010 16:12

I am having a unit every Friday.

Going to have a white wine spritzer tonight - actually just came on t'internet to find out how to make one

daisystone · 09/07/2010 16:16

Honesly, Americans are so funny about alcohol. I read that in some states they can prosecute you as it is actually illegal to drink while pregnant!!! Don't know if that is still the case.

America is funny about drinking full stop though - I lived in New Jersey for a year and some people treated me like an alcoholic when i wanted 2 or 3 drinks in a night (I wasn't pregnant then!). I thought, if you think I'm bad here, you should see me on home turf!

Meant to say I didn't drink in 1st trimester either.

Petsville · 09/07/2010 17:11

I'm 35 weeks and definitely still drinking - a small glass of wine or two a week makes the difference between feeling like a normal human being and a walking incubator. I didn't totally give up in the first trimester either, but then I wasn't at all sick and didn't go off it.

DomesticG0ddess · 09/07/2010 17:17

I didn't drink in the first trimester, but since then I have 1-2 half glasses of wine at the weekend. I don't find it a problem to stop at half a glass, just a little taste is enough for me, but I do miss it. I went to Italy for a few days and had a glass each day - when in Rome, as they say. I make sure I drink loads of water too. I will be less strict when I am breastfeeding - but to be honest I think I will be far too tired to drink very much at all!!

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 09/07/2010 17:17

Nothing in the first trimester but have had 2-3 spritzers a week since then and fully intend to continue that until I reach term, in fact if the weather continues like this I will probably swap to 2 pimms a week in the third trimester.

Cosmosis · 09/07/2010 17:28

yes I'm having a glas of wineish a week, and have drunk them in public loads of times with no judgy looks or comments!

MrsC2010 · 09/07/2010 18:01

I might have one this evening! Hmmm, sunny beer garden...cider...

hmmSleep · 09/07/2010 18:10

24 weeks pregnant and not a drop, didn't in previous pregnancies either. This is more because I get really sick on even one large glass of wine when not pregnant, and so don't really miss it.

I'm eating a lot of cherry liqueur chocolates though, does that count?

PinkElephant73 · 09/07/2010 18:12

god I wish I felt well enough to have a drink! The MS and horrid taste in my mouth has totally put me off. I have had a pack of Becks Blue in the fridge for weeks but just dont fancy it. Have been getting through the J2O like nobodys business.

I probably went over the limit quite often with my first 2 pgs, as like a lot of people thought that 1 glass of wine = 1 unit.

during breastfeeding I didnt worry too much ,and as I fed mine for a year and 9 months respectively there was no way I would have abstained for all that time as well - especially as the millenium happened when DS1 was 8 weeks old.

Honeybee79 · 10/07/2010 12:17

I have a one small glass of wine once or twice a week and there is no medical evidence to suggest that drinking at such a low level will harm the baby. Frankly, I get sick of how judgmental so many people are about the whole thing. Most pregnant women can be trusted to be responsible and not put their babies' health at risk. I do get very dirty looks in the pub when ordered my one glass but frankly couldn't care less!

MrsC2010 · 10/07/2010 13:01

I had half a cider with lots of ice in a sunny beer garden last night, it was lovely.

I did feel like everyone was staring at me though!

purepurple · 10/07/2010 13:16

My children are older, in fact my oldest is 21 next week, so not a child anymore
I drank evry now and again with both pregnancies and had very normal, healthy children.
I was very ill for the first 5 months with hyperemesis with both of them. By the time I was able to eat and drink normally, the odd glass of red wine and lemonade or Newcastle brown ale was a very welcome treat.

anyabanya · 10/07/2010 14:04

I abstained for the first trinmester (after finding out i was pregnant... post a massive boozeup evening). Then I had a half os a 125 ml glass twice a week for the remainder.... and never ever in public. MY DH would have gone for the jugular of anyone who wld have criticised that. Baby is 5 days old, and i haemorraghed badly with resulting anaemia. Consultant and midwife recommended a daily big glass of red wine and a guiness to rebuild iron stores (I am doing a combo breastfeeding with formula top-ups) and said that the idea of not drinking while breastfeeding is silly.... moderate drinking is fine.... not getting drunk, but they actively encouraged the amounts above. It is wonderful! Although I stagger my glass of red over the day as I cannot handle it anymore!

anyabanya · 10/07/2010 14:10

bad spelling typing one handed.

Bumperlicious · 10/07/2010 15:28

Yes, like others nothing till about 15 weeks or so when the first trimester and sickness passed, then I started again a little.

But I had a bit of a panic attack about 3 weeks ago as I realised that I had probably been drinking too much. DH doesn't drink wine so if I bought one I would drink a glass a night or every other night till it had gone. For about 6 weeks I was having a bottle every other week then had a major panic that I had done something bad so haven't had anything since, I haven't mentioned this to anyone else I was so

RobynLou · 10/07/2010 15:33

I haven't drunk anything yet, except a sip of DH's beer a week ago because I really fancied it. I'm only 12 weeks tho, I had occasional drinks when I was pg with DD and will this time too I'm sure, I've lot's of weddings to go to and it's just rude to not have a bit of champagne for the toasts

5DollarShake · 10/07/2010 15:47

anyabanya - I like the sound of your consultant and midwife!

And congrats on your new baby.

anyabanya · 10/07/2010 16:32

Thanks 5Dollar! He is lovely.

(And, I have been most careful to adhere to this medical advice in full.

RobynLou · 10/07/2010 17:54

1st day home with dd after we'd both been in hospital for 5 days, me and dh decided to pop open a bottle of champagne with lunch (we'd managed to have a backlog of champagne from presents!) halfway through the door went, in a moment of 6th sense I said "it's the midwife! hide the booze!" Dh shoved it under our bed, then we recommenced once she'd gone

My mum made sure there was guiness in our house when I got home - it's high in iron apparently

MistyB · 10/07/2010 18:02

Stick to this rule: If you are going to have a drink, make sure it's a good one - champagne is best IMO!!

While pregnant with DC2 I had a large glass of alcohol free Erdinger (very good BTW!) in a riverside pub, in the company of my toddler. I felt like I needed a very large sign saying that it was alcohol free and it was none of anyone's business (though possibly was a little paranoid!!)

Champagne glasses much more lady like!!

DillyDora · 10/07/2010 18:15

Have had a bottle of beer (1.7 units it sez on the bottle) or a glass of wine (measured with a measuring jug so I don't go over 2 units - you are not alone withorwithoutyou!) most weeks but only in the privacy of my own home or the homes of other women with children who say 'Have a drink! I did!'... I would be really hesitant drinking in public, I'm too scared someone will say something

Medee · 10/07/2010 18:32

I had 75ml of wine last night (that was one unit of 13.5% wine) and I will have the same again tonight. I'm 4 weeks pregnant. I don't plan to give it up entirely, unless my body tells me otherwise e.g through MS, but my alcohol consumption has been significantly reduced for a while now.
