hi ladies

i am also v v v tired at the moment. DH didnt get back til super late yesterday so we only ate at 11pm (we are usually late but not that late!) and i am a zombie today. have candlelit pregnancy yoga tonight and am pretty sure i'll fall asleep!

i have a question. i had a cold a couple of weeks ago and they tested me for toxoplasma (basically just because i was being a wiener and convinved that another PG was about to go wrong , not because they thought i had it). anway, i just got my results and they say that i have been exposed before but am not currently infected.

now, i might have got totally over excited about this but i think this means that i am immune and does that mean that i can now eat rare steak, sushi? does anyone know? i am trying to work out which foods have risk of toxoplasma rather than listeria and the whole thing is a bit confusing.

just wondered if any of you brains had worked it out.

dreaming of very rare things.

BabyB sounds like your manager was embarrassed at being caught out because he knew he was in the wrong! IME and from what other have said, you have to push for a H&S check, most employers wouldn't offer you one unless you demanded it (although they're meant to). I have never had one with either pg - hasn't really been an issue this time since have been off sick or WFH for most of it (and because I have a different, more understanding, boss), but last time I did have to point out to my boss that having to run up 4 flights of stairs between back-to-back classes carrying stacks of v heavy papers might not be the best idea for a heavily pg lady!

Jazzie, I am TIRED TIRED TIRED too!!

DillyDora · 10/06/2010 12:07

KFW as far as I know you can eat sushi anyway as all sushi sold in supermarkets etc is made with fish that has been frozen for 24 hrs. This is helpful but doesn't have the sushi bit in....so wonder where I read that... www.eatwell.gov.uk/agesandstages/pregnancy/whenyrpregnant/

O here we go...here's the bit about sushi etc

www.eatwell.gov.uk/asksam/agesandstages/pregnancy/

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks all. I even mentioned to my boss about locking up but he said that because I am only on my own for 30 mins he is sure it'll be fine!

Oh well. I tried, can't wait to go onto Mat Leave now!

I am starting to feel as tired as I was in the first trimester! I am 22+4 so like you say wasn't expecting it quite so quickly!

babybunting2010 · 10/06/2010 12:15

Ummm,.... Dilly I've just been reading that link and it seems to suggest that smoked salmon is ok to eat! Can someone confirm this for me???? xx

Saartjie · 10/06/2010 12:16

Thanks all. Yup feeling great today. Trying to focus on work but it's hard to focus on a Contract when all I want to do is think of my baby girl!

babybunting yes you should definitely have a risk assessment at work.It is your right.

Jazzie I have not been able to stay up later than 9pm since I got pregnant. I could actually got to bed already at 8pm but I force myself to stay awake for another hour otherwise I get no time at all with DH in the evenings. This baby thing uses up a lot of our bodies energy so we must rest as much as possible when we can. I don't think you need to worry, your body just told you it needed to rest. I fell asleep in my office chair on Tue but luckily noone saw this.

Can't stop smiling today!

babybunting2010 · 10/06/2010 12:17

Also do you think it means I can eat Fried Brie???? I HAVE BEEN DESPERATE FOR FRIED BRIE!!!!

Hevster · 10/06/2010 12:18

The Hevster advises you get all the sleep you can at the moment (I too am shattered) as the bigger you get the harder it becomes to sleep, and that is really annoying!

Jacksmybaby · 10/06/2010 12:19

Yes I think fried brie is ok since the heating process kills any nasties.
Don't know re salmon / sushi!

babybunting2010 · 10/06/2010 12:25

Mmmmmm...... fried brie! I could actually cry! I have been craving fried brie theoughout the whole pregnancy and have refrained from eating it! Might force DH to take me out for a meal tonight!

KFW · 10/06/2010 13:18

thanks dilly. i am sure i am just being thick, but i do find it all a bit confusing. i was sure i read somewhere that the no rare steak thing was because of toxoplasma. i have also read that there is a large number of false positives for toxoplasmosis, so maybe i shouldnt get that excited anyway. "only" 20 weeks more i guess...

i think i might allow myself a bit of parma ham/salami when i go on holiday in a month anyway. surely a little bit can't hurt?!

babyb - enjoy your fried brie! and i am really sorry that your boss is being a wa^ker. maybe have an extra big bit of fried brie to make up for it.

babybunting2010 · 10/06/2010 15:41

Thanks KFW- wish I had never mentioned the health and safety thing to him at work, keeps making snide comments about "Oh Lucy can't do that it's not safe safe!" and things like that, he says it with a smile as if he doesn't mean it!

Having a bit of an emotional afternoon. Just took someones comment on one of the other sites really personally and put a bit of a defensive comment back. When I re read it, I was just being over emotional!

BB: What a tw@t.

(boss, not you, I mean!)

estya · 10/06/2010 17:00

Hi people - haven't posted on this thread before but as I am due on 30th Oct I've eavesdropped a few times.

According to my 'what to eat during pregnancy' book:
"In the USA and australia, pregnant woman are advised not to eat smoked fish, including smoked salmon, unless it is hot. This is because of the potential danger of Listeria. However the risk is low compared with foods such as brie and pate, and in the UK smoked fish is officially considered OK. That said, in 2007 there were 2 incidences where batches of smoked salmon were recalled by shops because of contamination by listeria"

It goes on to talk about nitrates and nitrites etc which some think may be carcinogens, but I think that applies to everyone, not just us preggos.

I have been eating smoked salmon regularly as its an easy & nice way to get some oily fish - the benefits out weighing the risks, IMO.
I also see a difference in risk from smoked fish bought from a supermarket and from, for example, a small deli or farmer's market. (12 years in the food industry I know the supermarkets ask their suppliers to over process the food to guarantee safety to the detriment of quality.

Hevster · 10/06/2010 17:47

Welcome estya hadn't thought about smoked salmon as being oily fish, but of course it is, usually adore fish but completely off it since being pregnant however ss might be palateable cheers

estya · 10/06/2010 20:40

AND - get this.
I really fancied some brie - i love soft cheeses and haven't had anything like that since the beginning. So i bought some on saturday and was really looking forward to it.
My parents came over on sunday and after they had left it had disappeared. I think my mum must have confiscated it.

My husband hasn't seen it and it would be typical of my mum - she was giving me a big lecture on what i shouldn't be doing etc.

Jacksmybaby · 10/06/2010 21:09

at thought of your mum confiscating your cheese estya!

babybunting2010 · 11/06/2010 09:19

Estya! Welcome and lovely of you to join us! Actually laughing out loud at your Mum nicking your cheese that's the funniest thing I have heard in a long time! I understand fried Brie is fine I am going to a pub in Stratford on Avon (Near where I live) tomorrow as they serve a whole chunk of breadcrumbed fried brie and I am sooooo excited.

Random peice of advice for you all, if you are thinking of getting a clock for a babies room make sure it has a quite tick or no tick at all! We bought a beautiful clock but have worked out that it sets the monitor off!

(Wonders out loud) Can you remove ticks from clocks????

Hope you are all well and glad it's a Friday!

EleanorD · 11/06/2010 09:48

I love the thought of your mother stealing your cheese - that's seriously funny.
Yay it's nearly the weekend.
Is anyone else finding that the time from 12 weeks until now has gone relatively quickly but that time seems to be slowing down now we're approaching the 'mid 20s'?!

Saartjie · 11/06/2010 11:02

I am so excited now that I know I am having a girl. Still can't stop smiling about it. Have not felt impatient before really but now I just want to meet her. Another 20 weeks to go seems like a life time.

I am sure everyone has already stated their due date but is there anyone else who's got the same one as me, 26th October??

It's funny, if my girl would have been born here it would be Autumn, as it happens where she will be born it will be end of Spring/start of Summer. I can't wait!!

So glad it is the weekend.

Jacksmybaby · 11/06/2010 11:14

Saartjie I am quite of your exciting new life in SA! (Weird that as far as we're all concerned nothing will have changed though, assuming you will stay in touch on here... ahh, the miracle of the internet ).

Time is indeed dragging. I think that's because when you are only a few weeks into pg, 20ish weeks seems like it's really far along, but actually when you get there you realise it's not and there's still an awfully long way to go!!

Saartjie · 11/06/2010 11:29

I totally agree Jacks in the beginning it went really quickly for me but now that we've done 20 weeks more or less and you know you have another 20 to go it feels like eternity.

I will definitely stay in contact once we have moved. Just want to get the move over and done with. Still having nightmares of being too fat to fly Also bringing cat which in itself is a nightmare. The cost of bringing the cat is as much as one of our flights, ridiculous. At least he doesn't need to be in quarantine.

TizzyNo1 · 11/06/2010 11:34

Hello all,

Wow, haven't been on here for ages but thought I'd stick my beak in again! After worries about nasal bone being small at 13 week scan, had 20 week scan and doc said all is fine, no need for amnio! Phew! All other measurements good and in right ranges - long legs little head like me! Hubby still a little worried about not knowing 100% but I feel there's no way I would want to risk amnio / miscarriage now, especially cos gone very public and bubba is doing the boogaloo all the time so feel really bonded - has anyone been in a similar situation? I know no screening test is 100% accurate but how long can you test and worry for, really? Just liking enjoying it now!!

Am now 22+3, due Oct 12th - anyone else due then? Feeling real lucky with no symptoms. Oh the other thing, still riding my horse - is anyone else? Obviously only plodding around a few times a week, not jumping or anything! xx

Hevster · 11/06/2010 13:09

Tizzy not riding my horse any more as don't trust him 100% I used to event him and he's not what you'd call a novice ride! Have contemplated riding my old pony but think I might be a bit heavy. My Mum rode right up until the day before I was born!
No helpful advice on the testing sorry, but scan sounds like it went well so I wouldn't worry.

Time does seem to be slowing down, but i keep reminding myself that at 24 weeks there is a chance of survival and at 28 weeks we are into the third trimester - bring it on...

Saartjie · 11/06/2010 13:12

Oh I like your positive thinking Hevster will definitely keep that in mind.
