Pregnancy with the Mirena Coil fitted!?!

Just something niggling away at me at the moment....

I had the coil fitted in January this year and haven't had any problems. I still get periods, but no period pains and less PMT.

Anyway, as I was walking through to the kitchen on Tuesday night to pour myself a G&T I shouted through to DH "Good God I'm so tired and have a really horrible metallic taste in my mouth!".... I froze on the spot in terror at the prospect that I could be pregnant! I ran to bathroom and checked the threads are still there and they are.

SURELY I couldn't possibly be pregnant?!? It couldn't really happen at a worse time. DH and I not getting along.... all my other family problems...... and I'm about to start a new job.

Has anyone got pregnant with the Mirena coil fitted???

hoping for lots of NO WAY answers here

I know it's not what you want to hear but I did! Perhaps do a test just to be on the safe side?

Tissy · 28/07/2005 10:56

I remember Sue who lives on the island in Scotland did (I think it was her- husband GP, bad PND, kidney trouble...what happened to her?). I think her Mirena came out/ dislodged itself into her cervix though, so if your strings are still there I'd say unlikely.

expatinscotland · 28/07/2005 10:57

It's possible, but no probable. Take a test.

Toothache · 28/07/2005 10:58

OMG Anchovies!!

Was the Mirena still firmly in place?? What made you test??? Was the baby okay??????????

Tissy - Sobernow??

I had such sore boobs the other day that I almost couldn't put my bra on!! I thought I'd pulled a muscle. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. Will buy a test on the way home tonight.

Have I said OMG yet??????

has she changed her name? I'm having trouble keeping up...thought sobernow was around back then, though!

anchovies · 28/07/2005 11:01

Yep was still completely in place. Just had a funny feeling I was pg so tested. Eventually as he got bigger the threads dissapeared. Ds was fine, born by em cs and the surgeon couldn't believe I wasn't interested when he fished my coil out. Strangely I ws more impressed with ds!

Flossam · 28/07/2005 11:02

You poor thing. I can completely understand your sinking feeling! When all the pieces suddenly seem to fit together. I was alright, my AF arrived a few days late. But I know what you are going through. Buy the test, and I hope you get the result you want. xx

anchovies · 28/07/2005 11:04

It is very very unlikely that you would be. Will be thinking about you and as flossam said, hope you get the result you want.

Toothache · 28/07/2005 11:05

And again Anchovies [horror emoticon]!!!

Tissy - Actually I think I'm getting mixed up but I know who you mean.

Toothache I had exactly the same symptons 6/7 months after having mine fitted. I was convinced I was pg (horror of horrors). I even went to the clinic to get it checked and did so many negative pg tests. I wasn't - apparently the hormones in the coil (oetrogen/progesterone - can't recall which one) are the same hormones you have when you're pregnant - hence the pg symptons.

assumedname · 28/07/2005 11:45

Yes.

Sorry to hear that you think you might be.

Tissy · 28/07/2005 12:07

Guatamala?I wonder how I missed that! Explains why ~I never got my Morningwell tape back!

WideWebWitch · 28/07/2005 12:09

Oh shit ta, hope this is a false alarm.

oliveoil · 28/07/2005 12:11

Oh oh. Can you do a test today? I won't find out until Tuesday otherwise?

(but of course my feelings are uppermost at the mo....)

Rachey1969 · 28/07/2005 12:12

Toothache, I doubt it - the progesterone in the mirena may just be playing tricks on you with similar symptoms. I get pregnant very easily (the first month I've tried with all four of mine) but I didn't get pregnant using the mirena for a whole year (and only had two periods). I conceived this time a month after I had it taken out. Can you feel the threads?

Toothache · 28/07/2005 12:16

lol OO - You sound like ME (when its happening to someone else!).

Rachael - yes the threads are still there and I think my period was about 2 or 3 wks ago, definitely not more than that. But my periods have been a bit strange (heavy one day, really light for the next 10days!!).

dizietsma · 28/07/2005 13:45

I was conceived when my mother had a coil in. It is not unheard of.

Toothache · 28/07/2005 13:58

Well I tried to get out at lunchtime to the shops, but noone was able to give me a lift! I'll buy one at the Station on the way home.... will have to try to resist doing the test in one of the bogging train toilets!!!! >puke
