Pregnancy with the Mirena Coil fitted!?!

Toothache · 28/07/2005 10:53

Just something niggling away at me at the moment....

I had the coil fitted in January this year and haven't had any problems. I still get periods, but no period pains and less PMT.

Anyway, as I was walking through to the kitchen on Tuesday night to pour myself a G&T I shouted through to DH "Good God I'm so tired and have a really horrible metallic taste in my mouth!".... I froze on the spot in terror at the prospect that I could be pregnant! I ran to bathroom and checked the threads are still there and they are.

SURELY I couldn't possibly be pregnant?!? It couldn't really happen at a worse time. DH and I not getting along.... all my other family problems...... and I'm about to start a new job.

Has anyone got pregnant with the Mirena coil fitted???

hoping for lots of NO WAY answers here

Right... developments.... I'm getting a sharp pain really low down in my abdomen. I've had it since I went to the toilet. A UTI perhaps???? In both pregnancies I had UTI's throughout, but they start at about 4 or 5wks. OMG.

It's actually really sore, think I'll have to get some paracetamol..... oh and lots of water.

Toothache

How are you feeling now? It's very unlikely that you are either pg or it's ectopic but have you got any pain in your shoulder? When I found out I was pg with a coil (you need to do a test asap) the doctor said to watch for a pain in my shoulder as well as one sided pain in my abdomen. I am pretty sure you can still have an ectopic pg even if the pg test is -ve so keep a close eye on your symptoms.

Hope you feel better soon and everything works out fine (I'm sure it will).

Thanks Anchovies. No pain in my left shoulder and the pain in my lower abdomen is very central. Thanks for putting my mind at rest a bit.

My friend got pg with her sixth baby with coil fitted. They were looking for the coil in the pacenta after the birth. Not sure if she found it.

That was about four years ago. I think the more up to date coils are better, aren't they?

Good luck.

I do know of someone who got pregnant with an ordinary coil in (and had a normal baby) but the mirena has the hormone s well so the egg (if released) should be less likely to implant. I think you should get it checked by your gp or fp clinic. I don't think you get symptoms of an ectopic until 6 weeks plus( when it gets too big for the tube) but I do think you still get a BFP. Hope you get the chance to test soon!

Rachey1969 - I really have no idea how far on I would be as my periods are a bit weird since the coil was fitted. I have a longer cycle and can't remember when my last AF was!

God I take all the precautions and STILL worry sick.

Sure you don't want to hear this but I know 2 women who have got pregnant whilst having a coil in (don't know which one it was though).

First had an op to remove it and whilst they were in there they found a little foetus. This was about a year after she had twins, she went on to have another boy.

Second friend is a nightmare story sorry, she had a DD unplanned and didn't want another baby so had coil fitted. 7 months in she was having pregnancy symptoms doc told her it wasn't the coil it was working fine then she did a pregnancy test it was positive and she had a scan and was over 5 months pregnant, she was devastated. She had loads of scans to locate the coil but to no avail she had nightmares about the coil being lodged in the baby somewhere but anyway she had another healthy DD, coil was not in the afterbirth. She's had loads of docs trying to fish it out and last time I spoke to her she was having to have a major op to get it out, her DD is nearly 2 now. She is suing the hospital not though.

Sorry not what you want to hear

Hopefully you will have done the test by now toothy and it's the result you want.

I'm sure you know by now but just to let you know the symptoms you are feeling are very similar to what I had when I had the mirena coil.

In fact, my boobs became so sore and I was so nauseous that the GP didn't believe I wasn't pregnant (until I insisted I absolutely wasn't!!). I too had that dreadful metallic taste in my mouth (but apparently I had some sort of reaction that made my hormones go a bit mad). I had the coil removed and a few months later, my body returned to normal so it must have been the coil that was causing it.

Hope you've got the news you want.

Hope you get an answer soon, Toothache!

After working in county women's clinic and seeing one too many cases of migrating coils, we've decided DH will just go for the snip after this one arrives.

Did 2 tests... one yesterday and one this morning..... both a BFN!!! PHEW!

Pains are still there, but seem to be just a UTI. I just cannot get rid of this horrible taste in my mouth! I'm so paranoid that its making my breath smell that I'm constantly chomping on chewing gum.

Anyway, thanks for yesterday folks.

So glad you got the result you wanted! My GP is strongly recommending the Mirena to me so I have been watching this with interest. I haven't made up my mind yet but definitely don't want any more babies.
