Pregnancy with the Mirena Coil fitted!?!

Just something niggling away at me at the moment....

I had the coil fitted in January this year and haven't had any problems. I still get periods, but no period pains and less PMT.

Anyway, as I was walking through to the kitchen on Tuesday night to pour myself a G&T I shouted through to DH "Good God I'm so tired and have a really horrible metallic taste in my mouth!".... I froze on the spot in terror at the prospect that I could be pregnant! I ran to bathroom and checked the threads are still there and they are.

SURELY I couldn't possibly be pregnant?!? It couldn't really happen at a worse time. DH and I not getting along.... all my other family problems...... and I'm about to start a new job.

Has anyone got pregnant with the Mirena coil fitted???

hoping for lots of NO WAY answers here

Lots of people on here seem to dislike the mirena but I'm a fan personally. It is almost 99% - you must keep checking the threads are in the right place (or get dp to do it!). The effect of the hormones should be less than the mini-pill as there is less in it (because it's effect is local). After initial heavy bleeding/cramps for a few days I only had a couple of painless, light periods all year (unlike the traditional coil) and it could have stayed there for five. I had mine taken out and got pregnant (after no periods) a month later.

Thanks folks!

Pabla - If you definitely don't want anymore then the best way is probably sterilisation? That would avoid any future 'scares'.

Toothache Ive just read this thread as i have the coil in, not marina the other one!

Ive asked my GP about sterilisation and she said i wont be any more protected than with the coil in!

Im paranoide every month that IM pg again. Hate it. Even now since i hdd a period 2 weeks ago I still wonder even though i havnt done anything to get pregnant!!

My gp claims the coil is as effective as sterilisation (and I think she was referring to male sterilisation.) I was hoping dh would agree to a vasectomy but he feels he is too young yet. (I think he means that if I and the kids died in an accident he is still young enough to meet someone else and have another family.)

Hi! I am new to Mumsnet. I too have had my Mirena for about a year. Within the past week I have had some odd symptoms that I have never had before. Abdominal cramping, lower back ache, missed period, constipation, nipple tenderness and fatigue. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I also have a white to slight yellow discharge (not alot) Does anyone or has anyone had these symptoms with the Mirena in and what was the outcome. I am very nervous as I already have two kids and a stepson. I am planning on going to my gyno tommorrow.
