This is a bit hypothetical because I don't have a partner at the moment.

But I think I would like to have another child one day. Ds2 is getting on for 3 and I am now 36...ds1 is nearly 7. I am worried that I'm pushing it regarding age...I know the risks of 'problems' are higher after 35 so have missed that particular boat. Also if I met someone now I'd not want to rush into having babies straight away.

So, just curious about other people's thoughts on having children at this age, or a bit older.

I was 34 when I had my last planned baby, but 37 when I had my bonus baby

I wasn't really worried about abnormalities. I found it very tiring to be pregnant, but fine once DD was born.

Flightattendant · 28/02/2010 13:27

Thankyou that is reassuring! Starting to feel like the years are flying by and I'll never manage it.

Nature will find a way I guess.

Flight, my DD2 is due in March. I will be 40 in May! I had DD1 when I was 37. I know someone who recently had her first child at 44. Another friend is desperately trying for her 2nd child and she's 42.

I don't think there are any general rights or wrongs in this: you just have to do what is right for you at the time. The only thing I will say though is I wish my body was closer to 30 than 40 at the moment - late pregnancy gets bloody tiring!

Clary · 28/02/2010 13:30

I had DS2 when I was 39. It was fine.

We did stop then tho and one of the reasons was that I felt I had had three trouble-free pgs and was very lucky to be able to say that - seemed to be pushing it to aim for a 4th. Not very rational - just how I felt.

A friend of mine had both her DDs at well over 40 - IIRC she was 45 when DD2 was born.

Oh this is great stuff, thankyou so much.

Sometimes I feel very old and so many of the people on here seem to be in their twenties.

I'd have started having kids sooner but was a late starter in, well, every way!

Feel a bit more positive about it now.

i have had my last as dh has had the snip and i suffer badly with pnd but i had my last at 26. Sometimes i do wish i had waited and had bigger gaps between them as eldest nearly 5 then nearly 4 then nearly 1! But no one knows the right way!

1st at 22, last at 25. Am now 29 - no more babies, thanks!

lizziemun · 28/02/2010 13:46

1st baby at 35, second at 38 (just) and a 'surprise' at 39yrs. Definately my last and final as dh has been done so no more surprises.

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 28/02/2010 13:48

First baby at 21, second at 26 and would have liked more, but am being "forced" by medics not to have more, so 26years will be my final age

dingledangle · 28/02/2010 13:48

1st at 32 and 2nd at 35. Would like more but husband does not want any!

bluecheesedip · 28/02/2010 13:51

3rd and last at 36. I'm 40 this year and I'm finished - but if I wasn't, I would have another! Hope that makes sense...

Morloth · 28/02/2010 13:55

This will be my second and last, I am 33. DH is getting a vasectomy later in the year.

franke · 28/02/2010 13:58

1st at 35, 3rd and last at 40.

BigMomma3 · 28/02/2010 20:06

Last! one at 38 (currently 19 weeks gone with No4).

I was also worried about being over 35 which was what I thought was the cut off age after which there would be lots of tutting, additional tests and muttering about abnormalities but I have been strongly put right by my midwife that I am not anywhere near too old and there are plenty of us in this age range .

They only offer additional tests after 42 in my area.

ronx · 28/02/2010 20:10

first at 35, second (and last) due in September when I'll be 38

BadGardener · 28/02/2010 20:13

37 (3rd child)

pagwatch · 28/02/2010 20:16

1st at 31, 2nd at 35 and very much planned 3rd and last at 41

midnightexpress · 28/02/2010 20:17

1st at 39, 2nd at 40, still recovering at nearly 44 . I feel a bit too knckered now to contemplate a 3rd, but I certainly wasn't at 40, so you've a good few years in you yet OP (I only met DP when I was 37, btw).

expatinscotland · 28/02/2010 20:17
  1. Our third.
Lilyloo · 28/02/2010 20:20

My last was at 30 , was lucky to have 3 easy pg's.

IckleJess · 28/02/2010 20:26

1st at 17, 2nd at 21. Decided our family was complete then changed our minds and had 3rd at 29! Then felt we should even things up so am currently expecting 4th which is due a month before my 32nd birthday.

Definitely, definitely my last, I feel so old this time especially compared to when I had my first which was sooooo much easier.

KatnKankles · 28/02/2010 20:31

I had my 1st at 16 and am currently pregnant with my 4th and last aged 30...

Had I not started so young I wouldn't have a problem having babies at 40, it's just that my oldest will be 24 by then

mazzystartled · 28/02/2010 20:38

expecting my 3rd in April - was 40 in October

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/02/2010 20:41

Had second which I am pretty sure is last at 30.
