Okay. I'm 25 weeks pregnant today. DH and I dont know the sex of the baby, we wanted it to be a surprise. We're very settled on the name if we have a son (which I'm inclined to believe we are having) but have no clue about a girl. I had a dream the other night where we had a girl and for months on end we couldn't register her as we couldn't settle on a name.
We've toyed with a couple of names, only to have other people I know who are due before me say they're using that name too, and having grown up with the most ordinary name ever, I want my child to have an usual / different but not too bizarre name.

Anybody got any suggestions they can add to my growing list? I'm sure we're going to end up pulling a name out the hat, but I'm struggling with more ideas and reading the same baby name book is getting a bit boring!

Have a look at old novels eg Thomas Hardy, or the Bibles - Old and New Ts. There are many unusual names there, many of which were common in UK in previous centuries, but aren't used much any more, eg Ayala (gazelle), Hester (alt version of Esther), Zillah (don't know what it means, got it out of a novel).

Come to think of it, my sister lent me a babycare manual from the 20s, which has lists of names - they definitely won't be current! Here are a few: Althea (truth, frankness), Cordelia (daughter of the sea), Damaris (wife), Dulcie (sweet, fair), Elaine (torch), Elspeth (version of Elizabeth), Eulalie (fair speech - isn't there a Mumsnetter with that as a nickname?) Lilian or Lilias (purity), Margot (pearl), Yolande (violet), Yseulte (fair). And apparently Zillah means shadow.

And don't tell anyone what you have chosen as they'll feel free to criticise - which they won't dare to do after the baby is born - and you may well get bored with it by the time the baby is born.

joec · 29/06/2005 20:25

expatinscotland · 29/06/2005 20:32

Roisin Andrea is our girl name. Don't have a boy one yet.

TinyGang · 29/06/2005 20:33

Prettycandles - there are some very nice names in your post. You are quite right though - one of my dd's was going to be Esme all the way through the pregnancy, but I'd tired of it by the time she was born (I do still like the name very much though). She just didn't look like an Esme after all. I think babies can do that - they get a look about them which just doesn't suit the name you had in mind or you find it sounds a bit awkward with your last name.

joec · 29/06/2005 20:35

i have got rebecca, joe, eve and owen

compo · 29/06/2005 20:36

What about Hope?

Elf1981 · 29/06/2005 22:21

Loving some of the suggestions. Some very differnt to what I've read in a book which promises to have every name under the sun (should sue under trade descriptions act!)

Ahh, never mind. Never thought it would be so hard to name a baby! Poor thing does have to live with it for a long time though!!
