Girl names - again!

I'm expecting a baby girl and have started putting together a list of possible names. Unfortunately, nothing is really jumping out at me right now and I would love some input from all you Mumsnetters!

We tend to like quite traditional names - Beatrice and Maud are on our list - but I'm open to anything as long as it isn't too popular or trendy. Can you guys help me?!

Junior Peahead. I'm loving it.

PrincessPeaHead · 27/06/2005 21:46

no! really? someone really thought berengaria was a good name?!
It is the 2nd ugliest name I know.
First ugliest is Tegwyn. Eurgh, sounds like retching. Tegwyn. Why would you do it?!!!

marthamoo · 27/06/2005 21:48

As an aside: woman over the back from us was shouting for her dd this evening "Isabel...Isabel...Isabel..." and every time she shouted it dh said, sotto voce, "really necessary?..really necessary?..really necessary?"

I'd never thought of it like that before.

marthamoo · 27/06/2005 21:49

There was a little girl called Dakota in Balamory Nursery ti-daay. Mmmmmmmmm.

PrincessPeaHead · 27/06/2005 21:49

my dh does that but says Isobel necessary on a bicycle....

stringbean · 27/06/2005 21:51

I wanted to call dd Iris; love the name, and the Greek rainbow connotation. Dh refused.

marthamoo · 27/06/2005 21:57

Doh, that is what he said - forgot the bicycle bit. And it really needs that to make sense, doesn't it?

Earlybird · 27/06/2005 22:04

Please, please, please don't name your child Isabel or Isabella. Round here, it is a ludicrously overused name. It's laughable, and almost to the point where you meet a new child and say "don't tell me your name, let me guess it's Isabelle or Isabella". And more often than not, they smile and say "ooh, how did you guess?"

Most unusual name I've heard lately is Zelly. Was told that it's still obscure, but increasing in popularity as it's a shortened/affectionate version of "Mademoiselle". So...now you know...

fishfinger · 27/06/2005 22:20

ds1 was goiung to be isable

CountessDracula · 27/06/2005 22:30

pph you aren't married to my father are you?

He ALWAYS says that

aloha · 27/06/2005 22:37

No, she wasn't entirely serious (I hope). But not many people mention Berengaria in discussions about names. Actually I suspect you are the only two in the universe.

Mama5 · 28/06/2005 09:10

Miranda!

Enid · 28/06/2005 09:17

sorry honeybunny I love her full name and dont really think the shortened version is boring

ninah · 28/06/2005 09:18

Berengaria sounds like a small country waiting to join the EU

tex111 · 28/06/2005 10:09

What about Maeve? Too Celtic?

Adelaide (Addy)
Fern

Tex11 - I love Sally!

My dd is called Elizabeth. But I loved Isabella (my Mum and Grans name),Faith and Annabelle.

When are you due?

Marina · 28/06/2005 10:33

I also love Mary, and Lucy, and Jane, and Isabelle (of course). Even when my mother keeps saying "really necessary on a bike", ha ha ha all of you. There was I think it was just her!
Ellen and Rosamund were also my favourites for dd but I was vetoed.

Listmaker · 28/06/2005 10:36

How about Esther? I like that. I like Sally too and Mary. Oh I wish I could have another 5 dds to use all these lovely names!!

MandM · 28/06/2005 10:37

Heard a little girl at dds nursery yesterday called Denya, it sounded really pretty and seemed to suit her.

Also like Lexie, Elliana, Lucie, Anya and Lilia.

My dd is Marley. We love it and most people who hear it do (also heard boys called Marley recently), but some people don't like it. I think you always get that, whatever the name. You should always go with what you want and not be swayed by other people.

tex111 · 28/06/2005 10:39

QueenFlounce, not until 7 Nov but for some reason I've started freaking out over the name. Having a lot of difficulty finding something for a girl that works in England and Texas. It was so easy with DS (his name is Tobias John, called Toby) but it's much harder with a girl. I'm just not into the US trends of surnames (Kennedy, Bailey, etc) or androgynous names (Dakota, Taylor, etc) so a lot of my choices sound old fashioned at best to Texan ears.

Fern is lovely, and i used to work with a Prudence who was shortened to Pru.

We're thinking of Esme, DH laughed at my suggestion of Dorothy (BIG Wizard of Oz fan), and he liked french girls names (like Dominique) but his ex girlfriend was french so thats a big no no.

Friends have recently given birth to a Ruby, an Ava and a Rosie. Another friend wants to call her forthcoming child Boo but her Dh has put a stop to that

SoupDragon · 28/06/2005 10:40

Not Prudence. Sounds SO po faced.

MandM · 28/06/2005 10:41

Tex

looks like we'll have to agree to disagree over dds name!

tex111 · 28/06/2005 10:41

QueenFlounce, does your DD have a nickname or do you use Elizabeth? DH and I like Elizabeth but we can't decide on a short form.
