Girl names - again!

I'm expecting a baby girl and have started putting together a list of possible names. Unfortunately, nothing is really jumping out at me right now and I would love some input from all you Mumsnetters!

We tend to like quite traditional names - Beatrice and Maud are on our list - but I'm open to anything as long as it isn't too popular or trendy. Can you guys help me?!

I like Agnes, Agatha, Mabel, Constance, Florence, Ethel, Maud, Dorothy
(but some of those were vetoed by dh and anyway ds2 was, err, Ds2)

tex111 · 27/06/2005 12:10

You guys are fantastic!

I've added Clementine, Imogen, Margery or Marjorie (love it!), Martha and Libby to the list. I know there are others I'm missing.

You've included some I was thinking about and will have another look at - Thea, Agatha, Amelia, Mabel.

What about Pearl? It's a family name and I like it but is it just too unfashionable?

I love the name Thea too! My no. 1 name for a girl is Lily, but it is quite popular now. We know little girls called Imogen and Amelia and they are such beauties with names to match.....

MexicanMarissa · 27/06/2005 12:16

Pearl on it's own is a bit old fashioned but how about Pearl with a more modern second name?

What about Miranda? Is that a made-up name because I dont know anyone called it, but I do like it myself if I ever have a dd?

tex111 · 27/06/2005 12:18

If we go with one of the old fashioned names we like (like Pearl or Maud) I think we'll have to balance it out with something pretty and modern for a middle name. Just to be fair!

How about Madeleine? I like Martha too and Lydia. Shame I won't be having any more dds!!!

tex111 · 27/06/2005 12:53

I like Madeleine but for some reason DH doesn't.

No idea, but I read it as in Ferris Bueller's Day Off - the way the teacher in that said it "Buellah!!"

ninah · 27/06/2005 13:41

I'm earwigging on this thread cos I have no idea about girls' names but like a lot of these ...
Briony! that's great triceratops! like it
Trying to persaude dp out of Bethany and he is having none of my hippy names so we need a compromise.
When I thought ds was a girl I loved the name Miranda but now I am not at all keen.

Hana, I'm not due until 7 November but I'm really struggling with names this time. I love the very traditional English names for girls but my family describe a lot of them as 'elderly' or 'just plain ugly'. I'm sure we'll name the baby whatever we like but I dislike the thought of her being made fun of or laughed at in Texas. Really trying to find a compromise.

Have added Coral, Tegan, Margot and Patience to the list. Patience is particularly apt as this pregnancy has come after two miscarriages but would it get shortened to Pat or Patty at school? Don't like those names as much.

Nice to see Lexie getting a mention Fimbo. I have a Lexie (short for Alexandra) but you don't hear many of them around but I love it.

Don't like Coral or Tegan much I'm afraid. I like Meg, Evie, Ella, Mia, Eva.

homemama · 27/06/2005 15:35

I like old fashioned names too, but no DDs yet!
I like, Jocelyn, Mabel, Elizabeth, Margaret, Grace, Agatha, Martha and Erin.
You mentioned Pearl which I think originally was short for Margaret in the way that Bunty was a short name for Elizabeth.

hoxtonchick · 27/06/2005 15:37
