I am suffering SPD (for the second time) and just need to vent without driving everyone else on my pregnancy thread mental. Not that they aren't supportive but I still have 20 weeks to go and I don't want to ruin their pregnancies by talking about mine!

Please come and join me so I don't feel so alone, and feel free to share tips if you have any....

Great to hear that Indigo. I am having weekly private physio sessions too and just by a little gentle rubbing (basically that's all it is), I find the improvement incredible. £34 for half hour sessions - but sooooo worth it! NHS won't do anything other than give you instruction leaflets and crutches!

Nikki87 · 26/11/2009 16:54

Hey guys, just joined Mumsnet for some advice [and to chat to other mumstobe obvs]

For the last couple of days I've been finding really hard to move around, turning in bed, up and down stairs, and aching soso much [feels like my legs have been pulled out of my hips at some points!]. I've not been having clicking or anything like that.. but am slightly concerned it could be SPD.

Saw midwife this morning and she is going to refer me to the physio at the hospital, but said it could be a couple of weeks before I even hear anything, let alone get an actual appointment.. I'm 22 and 28weeks pregnant so want to be up and about moving, not sat in all day every day, thankfully I dont work [made redundant a few months back ] but I'd still like to be active.

PleasePleasePlease can someone give me some advice, do you think it is SPD and if so, what can I do??

Nikki xxxxxxx

PS after reading all your stories I hope I can be as strong as some of you and get through this!!!

echops · 26/11/2009 17:11

Hi Nikki87 - I've had pains since about 18 weeks (am currenly 26 weeks0 and can't say I found the hospital physio any help really (again, just given leaflets and a belt). The thing that has been most helpful has been a private Osteopath - although expensive (£35 per session) it really has helped. I walk out a different person (albeit one who isn't really walking that normally!). I've been told that whilst the pain etc probably won't go away until the baby is born, by doing gentle exercises (as recommended by my Osteo) and by keeping legs together (ie when getting in/out car/rolling over in bed etc) you can limit the progression. Fingers crossed for you!

CantThinkofFunnyName · 26/11/2009 17:12

Nikki - certainly sounds like it could be SPD. But don't fear, not everyone has it really really bad - there are differing degrees.

Suggest the best thing is to work your way through this thread as at various points are the guidelines given by physios as to what we can do to help ourselves. The NHS physios don't do much other than give you a belt and crutches (if you are really bad and need them).

Nikki87 · 26/11/2009 17:33

thanks guys, I have bought a support belt, so am going to wear that and see if it helps [fingers crossed ey]
I'd love to be able to go private as well, but being unemployed I really really cannot afford it... just hope the next 11weeks go quicky I suppose!

ohnelly · 26/11/2009 18:30

Oh just the thread im looking for! Im 22 weeks with my second pregnancy, and think I might have SPD. I have pain in my groin whenever I walk and especially moving around in bed or putting shoes on etc. It is constant when Im on my feet and moving around. Im also recovering from a broken ankle and an op to put pins/plate in at 10 weeks, so feel really unfit as havent been moving around much, and my ankle still gets sore & swollen if I do too much on it. Everything is such an effort!
Does this sound like SPD? I had a great first pregnancy & worked full time to 36 weeks. This one is so different. Any advice much appreciated

CantThinkofFunnyName · 26/11/2009 19:19

Ohnelly - again, yes, sounds like the dreaded SPD. Poor you though on top of ankle!!! My first pg was completely problem free, got SPD post natally with 2nd and this 3rd one has been horrendous from day 1!!! The SPD kicked in at 20 weeks and now at 34wks I have to confess that it actually feels like its getting better!!!

Have a look through the thread for the different advice/guidelines, particularly about keeping knees together when doing anything, and I'm sure you will find it helps. Regardless though, you should get properly diagnosed by GP, MW or physio as they will need to make notes for labour!

pureeandpearls · 26/11/2009 22:13

It appears MN towers have fixed me. Now to read back through three weeks of posts....

ohnelly · 27/11/2009 12:15

Hi thanks I am seeing physio once a week for my ankle anyway so I will mention it to her when im there next. I have ordered a big pillow from ebay and keeping the knees together when moving around in bed has definately helped. Feels a bit better so far today I think!

indigobarbie · 27/11/2009 13:09

Hi everyone, me again. Discovered that after my 1st chiro session laying in bed on my side and trying to turn over, I did some kind of movement which made a popping noise, then my pain all came back (not that it was entirely away, just it was easier). I actually think it was me shimmying my body on my side over to the edge of the bed that popped it. Almost as if I were (excuse the description) thrusting my hips forward to get me nearer the edge of the bed. It isn't painful but it sounds horrible, then it's bruised feeling.

I visited the chiro again and he did some work on my pubic bone to put it back into place: I want to tell everyone that this was NOT painful. Then I was somewhat better again. I have decided that I will not be sleeping on my side and have set up camp in my bed with about 8 pillows to support me in an upright position. However, I have found that sleeping on a woollen blanket with satiny £5 jammies from asda is easier just to slide off the bed, in an upright position.
I am resting around the house and although boring as it is, it's better than trying to struggle into work with these crutches the physio gave me, I find them very difficult to use (sore on my handies).

What I was wondering is this:
Could everyone post up any exercises they have been given from their expert helpers?
Mine so far have just been the pelvic tilts in a seated position, then the pevlic floor and holding in the abs.

Guys we WILL get through this xxx love to everyone xxx

pureeandpearls · 30/11/2009 20:42

HI all- had fun visit to consultant today. Waited 2 hours to be seen for five minutes....to be told they can't really do anything now and they will see me again at 36 weeks to talk about early delivery. "Although maybe the baby will have engaged then and I won;t feel so uncomfortable".

Maybe not. She also said I shouldn't be driving any more.

Good news is that I scored a nanny today so less chasing after one year old and more resting (aka buying stuff online)

Exercise schmexercise Indigo.

Anyone else on painkillers? If so, what and where can I get them?????!!

fetaqueen · 30/11/2009 21:15

Hi All.

Ive found some friends...

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and counting down.. not so mch for the baby but in hope of the pain being gone.

I too have had little support. I had a C section due to carryng Breech in my first pregnancy and will be opting ofor one this time round to make the pregnancy a bit shorter... can people tell me is it ok to do this again or am I riskin getting this long term.

Really scared reading of the people getting it long term.

Also does anyone know if funding is available somewhere.. ANYWHERE... having to send my three year old to nursery as just look after her. In too much pain. Cant move.x

Thank you guys
xx

Hi all

I am really in need of advise here had spd with dc2 and dc3, dc2 took 10 months post delivery to recover and dc3 has taken 2 years and just found at am expecting dc4! My spd has obviously never gone after dc3 and have been bed bound, not able to do any shopping etc on some days! My main worry is I am having a dragging feeling down below (sorry tmi) but thought you ladies would understand and have had threatened ectop and mis before, sorry cant write the words start to cry!!!! I am not bleeding (mt3 touches every piece of wood possible!)

Has anyone else had this?

thank you anyone for reading this x

MrsDmamee · 01/12/2009 09:46

morning All, i cant believe im suffering so early this pg im 10 weeks pg and last night was just agony for me.

my pains started off as a slight twinge 2 weeks ago while out walking with my ds in his buggy and since then i took it easy and had no more pain, until yesterday when i had to walk to playschool on very icy roads.
I kept losing my footing but never actually slipping. I think all that movement really threw my pelvis out of position.

So im back to wearing my SPD belt from last pg and im going to see how the pain is today and if it doesnt ease i'll ring my GP for painkillers and whatever else is available

pureedchestnutsonanopenfire · 02/12/2009 20:54

MrsDMamee- can only sympathise- that's what happened with me. When you get it that early you do despair.

Fetaqueen- I'm lucky enough that we've just hired a nanny to cope. I'd speak to mw to see if you ca get help, though think you get vouchers from govt for childcare when your kids are 3? (((Hugs)))

Mumto3- my sympathies too. I know what you mean about the feeling- I've had it since quite early on. I'm 27+5 and still here so it's not necessarily the worst. (((hugs))) and tske each day as it comes- I woon't tell you to rest because I'm guessing you live that anyway. We're here if you need us

Oh and thansk to 7dayweekend- on Codydramol at the moment and it's sort of working so wanted to know if there was something better. Thought you couldn't use TENS when pg, s will investigate. Tempted to try Chiropractor to.....any port in a storm

[waves to all]

CantThinkofFunnyName · 03/12/2009 18:27

Hi all - I've been on crutches for a while now and was totally climbing the walls (or should I say clinging to the walls to move around) for a long time.

However, now at 35 wks pg i can honestly say that the symptoms have all but disappeared. I do still get twinges and a bit of stiffness from time to time but it is NOTHING compared to what it was.

There is light at the end of the tunnel ladies

mumtoo3 · 03/12/2009 19:55

thank you

its so good to hear that the feeling is normal and i am just hoping and praying that this little one holds on and this is just spd showing its ungly face early!! does not help its never really gone from dc3!

thank you again ladies its so nice to know i am not alone with this

x

Mama2b5 · 03/12/2009 20:17

pureedchestnutsonanopenfire · 03/12/2009 22:13

CTOFN- that's great news My crutches are my new best friend. That and the nanny we've hired because I can't lift DD.

waves to all

RnB · 03/12/2009 22:21

hello ladies, may I join you?

I'm only 14 weeks with dc3 but already starting to get the all familiar twangs in my hips. I suffered pretty badly with dcs1&2 (7&8 yrs), and have also had continuing bouts up until just before this pg, sometimes resulting in needing crutches

Am dreading the agony of turning over in bed
Oh gawd...

fetaqueen · 05/12/2009 22:04

Not sure if Im just getting freaked ut by some of the stories on here..

Will get Nursery vouchers in Jan for my daughter.... until then Ive set up a rota of where she goes or who is with me to help...

Got a wheelchair too... keep telling myself its a temporary thing.Shopping in a wheelchair is very hard!!

Lets have more positive stories of the SPD goin away...cantthinkofafunnyname.. are you saying your SPD is getting better?.. how come.. please give me hope.
xxx

Naetha · 05/12/2009 22:25

Just to let you know that I gave birth to DD a week ago after being induced on my due date.

Had a reasonably straightforwards labour, and we were discharged the next day.

One week one I still have some pain, but it's only about 1/4 of what it was before, and perfectly manageable with solpadol / diclofenac. I can walk without crutches and just about (but probably shouldn't!) lift my DS (nearly 2). Just make sure if you're taking co-codamol for more than a day or so at a time that you get some lactulose as well as it doesn't half bung you up!

Best of luck to you all, and here's hoping you all feel much better soon

Naetha - congratulations!

Fetaqueen - yes, my SPD is so much better that it has almost disappeared completely! I don't really know how but suspect that the private physio sessions I was having contributed substantially. But I also suspect that pure luck has a lot to do with it too!
