I am suffering SPD (for the second time) and just need to vent without driving everyone else on my pregnancy thread mental. Not that they aren't supportive but I still have 20 weeks to go and I don't want to ruin their pregnancies by talking about mine!

Please come and join me so I don't feel so alone, and feel free to share tips if you have any....

FunnyName, thanks for the inspiration. I'm sure that's what happened in my last pregnancy - I had some weeks where my movement was down to about 20% but after resting for a few days it was back up to 50/60%.

Somehow it doesn't seem to be the same this time - I'm resting a lot but never making it back up past 20% (and normally somewhere around 10 ). I am still hoping that this is a glitch though and things will pick up at some point so I'm not completely useless for the next 16 weeks {wobbly but brave face].

CantThinkofFunnyName · 16/11/2009 17:59

Estar - I started private physio last Monday and really think that might be helping. Basically its v v v gentle rubbing/manipulation I guess of the areas affected - but just feels like someone rubbing your pain better IYKWIM?

£34 for half an hour so not cheap, but DH is insistent as its a small price to pay if I can actually mobilise a little bit during the week!

Had it today and not great, but thats the same as last week. Hoping by Wednesday I will miraculously ease up again!

Naetha · 16/11/2009 19:26

Had my consultant appt today - was a real success

Consultant had a look "up" there, although the cervix was quite far back, it was 1cm dilated and soft and thin, so looking good. He gave me a stretch and sweep (ouchy, but effective I hope!), and booked me in for an induction. It's not until a week on Wednesday, which will end up being the day before my due date, but it's better than going 2 weeks over!

Life is a lot more manageable now that the end is in sight!

CantThinkofFunnyName · 16/11/2009 19:54

Yey Naetha - that's great news. You must be thrilled

Mama2b5 · 16/11/2009 23:00

hi all - CTOFN, MM - hope your ok well as well as you can be!
estar - that is very god and such a postive step forwards there's hope for us all!
i am getting he pains more at night personally i find it such a struggle to get out of bed and pee im considering getting a bedpan! or comond!
i have never focused so much when turning over and getting out before in my life! its such a nightmare! i actually dread nightime now also have such broken sleep and then so tired and drained in the day!!!!! bring on 9 working days ill the end and so i can rest during the day! light i see light!!!!!

Eliza70 · 17/11/2009 12:09

I have PGP and have been given a massive belt (3 strap thing) to wear, but only when walking - which seems a bit pointless as I am sitting in work most of the day. Does anyone know if you can wear the smaller underbump belts all day?

Also re sleeping; am mostly on my back as lying on my side is agony for some reason, does anyone know if lying on your right side is not recommended in later pregnancy (I am 31 weeks)

thanks fellow sufferers!

Naetha · 17/11/2009 13:59

Eliza have you tried sleeping propped up with cushions? If you're struggling to sleep on your side, this might be an option. Also as you get bigger, you'll really struggle to sleep on your back - I usually wake up if I've gone on to my back as I can barely breathe!

I got all excited last night as I had regular painful contractions for about 2 hours. Then they just tailed off, and eventually stopped I really thought it was labour, so I straightened my hair and tweezed my eyebrows and everything! (I looked through my post-birth photos with DS the other day and I looked horrendous in them lol!). I then went mad cleaning the spare room and fixing the toilet roll holder while putting up with pretty strong contractions. THen as soon as I sat down for a breather after the frantic activity they just stopped! DH was trying to get me to move around (!) and twiddle my nipples to keep things going but I didn't have the energy! Will hopefully get another S&S tomorrow at my mw appt and see how it goes

Harimad · 19/11/2009 14:04

Hiya,
Haven't read all this thread (it's a biggie!), but I have been suffering from what seems to be mild spd (compared to some of you poor ladies) since about 5 months (am now nearly 8 months).
I bought some fitflop boots at the w/end however (using part of my health in pregnancy grant!) and although I'm still not right, the levels of pain have reduced immensley!
Has anyone else tried these / found they helped?

Hari.

mommymeggie · 19/11/2009 14:17

Eliza- I have been given the same exact belt as you have described. I can sit in it but not for long b/c it gets very uncomfortable. I do have another belt from mothercare that is basically one strap and I can sit in that for a while but like all belts, it starts to feel uncomfortable. But honestly the best thing to do is sit for a bit and then get up for a little wonder around. If I sit too long, I am in agony! It helps to walk around a bit and then sit back down.

Now for the sleeping bit, I get so uncomfortable sometimes on my side b/c my hips start to hurt. Has anyone experienced that? They just ache like mad! I've asked my DH to buy me a mattress topper and praying that will help me. I'm 32wks now and I can't even dream of sleeping on my back....and thats my fav position when I'm not pregnant.

Hari- what are fitflops? I've never heard of them. I'm awful and still wear my boots with a little bit of a heel in them. I am going to have to switch to my uggs soon b/c I am starting to feel it!!

LissyGlitter · 19/11/2009 14:18

Hiya, just thought I'd drop in and tell you all there is hope- I had my baby on Monday by planned section, and I left my crutches in hospital! I still have the SPD, especially in one hip, but it is fading fast. I find the trick is to keep moving regularly. The midwife who vistited my house said she could tell I had had SPD the moment she saw me walk, but it is amazing to be able to move again.

Harimad · 19/11/2009 14:36

Ah congrats Lissy - that IS great news.. and it was something that was worrying me... 'what if afterwards I'm still in pain and still can't keep up with my 2.5 year old?!!' Phew!!

mommymeggie, I'm going to attempt a link:
www.shoe-envy.co.uk/FitFlops

Basically fitflops are along the line with mbts - all those shoes that are allegedly supposed to help you with losing weight on your thighs / bum, but also are good for back pain etc.
And now they're doing them Ugg-stylee...

I thought they might help with the back pain which would have been a benefit in itself, but they do seem to be helping ease the ligament pain too.. and I've only worn them a few days.

Still got my attractive pelvic girdle tho' - not brave enough to try without that yet!

LissyGlitter · 19/11/2009 14:45

Those of you with the milder SPD (which is what i suppose I have now until I heal fully)- are you managing to have baths? I have been stuck with showers for a while now and am dying for a soak (just waiting for the go ahead section scar wise) and wondering if there is a trick to getting in and out? My SPD is mainly in my left hip, and obviously I have the added complication of not being able to use my tummy muscles at all due to the section. DP will help me if need be.

Mama2b5 · 19/11/2009 17:34

Congrats to you and your LissyGlitter!I cant wait to have my baby, jan seems so far!
I am suffering more at night then in the day i really dont actually understand it! when i turn i yelp in pain! the bath is a no no the last time i tried i spend 15 mins trying to get out i finally had to call for help from DH who was sleeping, it was really late!
time cant pass quicker if you asked me, some look forwards to sleep but i actually dread it and am considering sleeping in my armchair!

indigobarbie · 19/11/2009 17:49

Girls love to eveyone here xxx
I have found that a matress topper takes the pressure off my hips. I have the silky jammies, slidy polyester blanket underneath me, matress topper and I have been propping up the whole of my upper body up on loads of cushions at night and can still seem to lay on either side (still a struggle to turn over, but not too bad, or not as bad as laying down normally without the pillows) when I wake up for one of my many pees in the night my pubic area does not seem to be just as painful. When I got up this morning I wasn't as bad as I have been. My midwife says it's a normal part of pregnancy. My physio is just letting me get on with it (what else to do??). My friend suffered also and she said her birth was fairly quick as her pelvis was nice and 'open'........
During the day I have on a brace but it can become uncomfortable. Next step is crutches although I hope to see a chiropractor next week for an assessment. My physio told me to do pelvic floors, tighten my stomach muscles and to try to keep moving. If I sit on a hard chair with my back upright it seems to help. Then I try to sit on a gym ball for a little while too.
Here is one website I have found

CantThinkofFunnyName · 19/11/2009 18:34

Lissy - many congratulations!!! So pleased for you. My planned section is in 6 weeks (and counting)... how was it? And was the getting up after c/s ok with the SPD on top of it all? one of my fears/worries.....

Boo hoo - in sooooo much discomfort/pain tonight. Sat in DS's room for a couple of hours today, on a work/computer chair (not usually uncomfortable) doing some bits on desktop computer. The chair has totally finished off my pelvis for the weekend. Was doing so well past couple of weeks - just niggles really. Feel like I'm back to square one again (boo hoo some more).

DH going out tonight on a pre-arranged rugby club dinner and I really think I need to resort to the co-dydramol, which I try not to unless absolutely nececssary. Trouble it, it does make me v v drowsy, which is not great with two other DCs to look after when DH out!!

Sorry for the whinge. How's everyone else?

Naetha · 21/11/2009 17:01

How was your evening CTOFN? I had a night from hell as well - I borrowed a friend's birthing ball, and although it was comfy to sit on last night, once I went to bed I was in absolute agony - I took 3 lots of 30/500 strength co-codamol through the course of the night, and still only got about 2 hours' sleep

AND even worse (well, maybe just the same actually!) I've developed piles! I had this AFTER I gave birth last time, so I'm really not looking forwards to the pushing stage this time!

Still, only 4 days to go until my induction - I get the feeling that as soon as they give me that pessary I'm just going to wheesh off into labour (here's hoping anyway!). I've had my show, I've had constant BH/mild contractions since my stretch and sweep last monday, and all I need is a gentle tweak of one nipple to give me a much stronger one! In many ways I'm hoping she'll stay in until Tuesday though, as that's when my mum's coming up to look after DS! I've also got my pedicure booked on Monday (had to give it a miss last week!) and I'm REALLY looking forwards to that!

Hope everyone is coping OK - I'm having a bit of a break while DH and DS watch Star Wars!

CantThinkofFunnyName · 21/11/2009 17:14

Naetha - God I feel for you and I'm only 33 wks!!! I've had piles since about 20 wks - really awful ones too (TMI) - can't recall ever really having them before.

Took painkillers last night, had a foot spa and my DD (6) rubbed lavendar massage oil all over my back whilst I leaned over a birthing ball. She is such an angel - and gives a FAB massage .

I understand the comment re the birthing ball. I was sitting on mine regularly and have come to the conclusion it's absolutely not on anymore due to the agony that ensues afterwards. Of course - its supposed to open up your pelvis and get baby into position isn't it! Doh!!!

Anyway, was ok for a couple of hours today but really feel the need to rest pelvis again now - ho hum

mumtoo3 · 21/11/2009 18:58

hope all is well with everyone..will try and catch up with you all!

madmissy · 25/11/2009 17:34

Naetha you helped me out on a thread the other night. good luck on your induction (which i think it tomorrow?)

indigobarbie · 25/11/2009 20:50

Hi everyone, just wanted to mention I had my first chiropractor session today, and I am happy to report I am amazed at the findings and I am amazed that after a few gentle 'adjustments' on my pubic bone, I could get off the bed and I felt better.

It does still feel very tender, but the pain edge seems to have diminished.

I also just received crutches from my NHS physio who apologised as she said nothing can be done for me and hopefully it will go away once my baby is here.

The chiropractor advised me that my pelvis is out of alignment (left hip a lot lower than my right and I have never had any injuries) and from feeling my bones he advised that my pubic bone seems to be overlapping/misaligned and this would be the cause of me unable to walk and the popping grinding that is going on.

I will continue to report on my progress, just in case this helps at least one person out there.
