Mears, the programme you saw was programme no3 which would have been repeated from monday 6th as last nights programme was no4.

This will be my 2nd baby, hospital birth and I had a little girl.... Hope this helps...

I was happy for the couple last night who lost 1 baby a year ago, I am glad she gave birth to a healthy little boy.

Rochwen · 15/06/2005 09:56

Ooooh I so felt for that poor woman who couldn't have the epidural and was then given the episiotomy because she was so exhausted with the pain. She was clearly in so much pain.(she was just being very brave not screaming the house dow). Couldn't they have given her something? They just kept cutting and cutting and ignored her totally. I cried when I watched that, the poor poor woman.

I also think that her midwife (was she a trainee?) could have been a bit more encouraging and hands on, perhaps then the poor woman would have managed without being butchered.

I know I know it could all have been the editing of the show and we don't have all the details but it just seems like that poor woman was left alone and ignored.

mears · 17/06/2005 23:01

Just watched vidoe of last night's programme which was no.4 right Nish?

The poor woman who was having her 4th baby did not make an informed choice about her waters being broken I thought. She seemed to make a choice on the basis labour would be speeded up, however research shows that it shortens labour by only about an hour. What it certainly does is make labour more painful. I would love to know why she was on a monitor on a bed. That increases pain levels too.
She would have coped much better with having the waters left alone and being up and about or using the ball we saw earlier in the programme. Even better a waterbirth. And why was she given her baby wrapped in a towel, she should have been popped in skin-to-skin. Obviously the programme is edited so you can't see the whole story. It is so frustrating as a midwife to watch. I only hope I'm not on when the cameras visit our unit. No doubt my practice would get picked to pieces too

mears · 18/06/2005 13:51

Anyone else see it?

paolosgirl · 18/06/2005 15:40

I got a bit when the midwife delivered the home birth, and said "now THATS birth" on the way out to the car. And that makes all other births what????????

I must say I didn't feel much sympathy for the one who didn't get her epidural. She would have got a local for the episiotomy, but she did seem to expect the epidural (after wanting her waters broken to speed things up - even though her labour was progressing normally). She didn't seem to want to do much to help herself. Although I'm sure the editing doesn't help.

mears · 18/06/2005 16:43

I thought there would be lots of comments on this programme. No-one else watching other than us?

bubbaloo · 18/06/2005 17:43

mears-there's another small thread on this in the "telly addicts" section.

mears · 18/06/2005 17:46

Thanks

Nish · 18/06/2005 21:32

Yes Mears you are right that was programme No4.

Yes I found breaking my waters made it more painful but my waters were broken as a last resort, I would much prefer for them to have gone naturally... I got the impression she just wanted it over yes we all know labour is painful and yes we all can't wait for it to be over when we have been in pain hours but she wanted it over before it even started... Anyway i shall be careful what i say about others as they may say the same about me after mondays episode....

Eriberri · 18/06/2005 22:17

Yep - my sentiments too Mears! I was really trying to persuade her not to do it!

Should kind of say hello here as well - been lurking a while and not posted before! :-)

mandyc66 · 18/06/2005 22:39

I had my waters broken with dd..she then popped out in no time!!! the membranes were bulging apparently!!!!

Rochwen · 19/06/2005 14:00

I'm watching it and I have loads of opinions, lol !

...another thing that upset me about programme No 4 was the comment of the aneathasist who was trying to get, first a spinal, then an epidural into the poor woman having a c/s. When none of his attempts were sucessful he said something like 'if that doesn't work we're going to have to shoot you' or something similar. I thought that was not only highly insensitive but also totally unneccessary. Even the midwife in the room with her was shocked.

I think I would have complained about this guy (after trying to stick 5 veterinary size needles in his spine) !

It was good tonight.... DH was upset by the ressus bit but that is because we didnt see jess get ressuss'd but now know what they did to her.

Rochwen · 21/06/2005 10:29

I liked this episode !

The midwife in the hosptital (I think she was Easter European) was fantastic, she explained everything, was really cheering on the women and she confidently took control of a difficult situation without panicking. It want a midwife like her !

Loved the homebirth, the woman was so calm and relaxed, it was wonderful to watch ! Lovely how everyone was so emotional when the baby was finally there, even the midwife.

I'm getting better at watching births, I'm not panicking anymore. What do they say? 'Face your fears' that's what I'm doing with this programme.

Nish · 21/06/2005 19:28

yes I was Michelle...
