This is my hospital! Derby City General - where I've had my babies and will be having another in November!

Hulababy · 23/05/2005 21:32

katzguk · 23/05/2005 21:33

Hulababy · 23/05/2005 21:33

LOL! DH did wonder if he'd have his mobile on vibrate in his pocket. You reckon he'd come home or just text to see if they are close enough together!!!

rodeo1 · 23/05/2005 21:33

I think so fashill, Good luck!! Maybe you'll be watching it breastfeeding?!

OP posts:

katzguk · 23/05/2005 21:38

Bloody Hell (literally !!!)

Expat said:
'Wonder if it's a good idea to watch this whilst pregnant.' Definitely NOT ! Eeekkkk, am totally terrified now.

Several things I noted:
The midwifes were totally rushed off their feet and (I'm not sure whether that was the editing) the births seemed like a factory line. There was no personal touch, I hardly heard the midwifes say anything kind (in fact they were so patronising to the girl with the c/s e.g. 'now you're not going to look good on telly') or very compassionate. They just didn't have the time. I don't think any of the women had a 'birth experience', it was just 'get them in - get them out'. The woman at home seemed to have the best care, and I was impressed how cool the midwife was who 'woke up' the wee boy was - well done her.

All the births (except the home birth) happened with the women lying on their backs. I thought that's considered bad practice by now and that you could choose which position you want to deliver in, no? Even the women who was having her 5th child had a monitor strapped to her belly and was 'tied' to the bed on her back. I'm expecting my first baby at the beginning of August and I would hate to have to lie on my back, apparently it's so much more painful.

Speaking of painful, my word, all that screaming. I'm convinced now that I'll be asking for an epidural the minute I'm in hospital.

Lastly, why would anyone want to be filmed whilst giving birth? I felt for those women and I wonder if they'll feel exploited when they see the footage.

All in all I have to say that I'm quite traumatised by the programme. I have no personal experience of birth but it looks babaric - painful, bloody, out of control and (sorry to say that) very undignified. I guess I must have been naive. So, I'm not sure I'll watch that programme again until my baby is born.

I'd be interested what you all thought.

horseshoe · 24/05/2005 12:29

I actually considered a home birth before I saw this.

Now I'm going safely to the hospital.

foxinsocks · 24/05/2005 12:30

I didn't see it but...

I had both my kids on my hands and knees in hospital and the only time I had to lie down on my back was when the midwife wanted to check the baby's heartrate. I'm not a midwife but I can assure you that unless they feel something is wrong, you won't be tied to that monitor!

hope that makes you feel slightly better!

Gobbledigook · 24/05/2005 12:30

I didn't see it Rochwen but don't let it scare you. All 3 of my births were fantastic, my midwives were brilliant, kind, attentive and I didn't give birth on my back either (kneeled up over back of bed). You are right, it's 100x worse if you are lay backwards so stay upright if you can. AND, sit on a birthing ball for labour if you can and rock back and forth on it through contractions - absolutely fantastic!

pupuce · 24/05/2005 12:34

I don't have BBC3 so can't comment on the programme but can say to your comment Rochwen, that's exactly why more and more women book doulas... to help you have that birth experience regardless of the busy mws... and not all women scream... not if they are being cared for FROM THE BEGINNING - and are not scared! I am not saying it is all silence, there can be a "fxxxx hell this is hard" sort of shout but the out of control panicky screams are not common if you have proper support from your midwife or birth partner.

'rochwen, that's why I had an elective CS. Best decision I ever made.... '

I think that's what I'm going do now, lol. (Btw, did they give you one on request or did you have a medical reason for one.)

wordgirl · 24/05/2005 18:20

The worst bit for me was that epidural needle going in - I think I would rather be in pain!

chezie · 24/05/2005 18:34

I'm really p**d off I missed this desperate midwivs programme. I have set sky+ to record it next week. I am due in Jan and have 2 DSs aged 4.6 and 1 yr old and with both of them I just climbed onto the bed and used gas and air. This time I am going to try and manage without. I cant imagine staying upright though... I was desperate to lie down

Frizbe · 24/05/2005 19:00

Oh bugger I missed it too! It was my hospital when I had dd! would have been nice to see if I could spot anyone I knew
