This is my hospital! Derby City General - where I've had my babies and will be having another in November!

By the way I haven't seen Desperate Midwives yet but colleagues who have were appalled by the resuscitation techniue at the homebirth

hunkermunker · 31/05/2005 00:04

That's really interesting, Mears - I feel I was over-coached during the final stages of labour (one midwife kept saying "now give me a third push" when I'd already done three that contraction - grr!), and looking back, I think one of the midwives panicked a bit - she thought the cord was round DS's neck, but could only feel it one side (er, over his shoulder then, perhaps?!) and she got quite squeaky.

will watch it on Thurs (hopefully i will remember)

morocco · 31/05/2005 00:09

ooh am I the only one who feels really sorry for the midwives on this programme - they're not going to get away with much are they??
(not saying they shouldn't have their errors pointed out, but I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to be filmed myself and I don't even do anything that exciting)

mears · 31/05/2005 00:10

one reason why videos are often discouraged in the delivery room

hunkermunker · 31/05/2005 00:11

Mears!

Giraffeski, another for the innacurate info, and Hunker!

In fact, giraffeski mentioned another of my moans for this program - the cheerleading! How on earth is a lady meant to concentrate with three or four people shouting
"puuuush!MoveyourlegliebackdocartwehhlsPuuuushOoooohIcanseethe...PANTlook!pushpandpushpantpuuuushpuuuuushooohlookhere'syourbabyisn'the'shebeautifuuuuul"

I said in my birthplan that I didn't want to be 'encouraged' during pushing .

I'm sure it's directly related effective use of contractions, hence perfect apgars and no tearing!

Kama, are you ok? You know, no video would be as evocative as the memories in our hearts and minds .

Nish · 05/06/2005 21:15

I was one of the mums filmed for this programme although not been on it yet.

mears · 09/06/2005 23:06

Just saw it tonight. Thought it was quite good - except don't understand why the midwife had to break the waters at the 'natural' homebirth though.

mears · 09/06/2005 23:07

When are you on Nish?

Gobbledigook · 09/06/2005 23:09

I wish I hadn't watched it for 2 reasons:

  1. The separation of Caroline and Eloise was just brutal and it broke my heart

  2. Seeing the newborns had my hormones raging and suddenly I really want another - already got 3 and really can't have anymore but I want oooooooonnnneee!!!

Gobbledigook · 09/06/2005 23:10

Mears, i wondered that too - wouldn't they have just broken anyway and does it even matter if they don't? My friend delivered both her children membranes intact.

mears · 09/06/2005 23:43

It's meant to be lucky to be born in the sack or 'caul'. Fishermen believed they would never drown if they kept their caul with them.

Nish · 10/06/2005 14:30

As far as I know I should be on Programme 5 (Monday 20th June), but that is if they don't change it....

Watching the young baby being taken away from her parents broke my heart to. I quite enjoy watching this programme it shows you the side of giving birth that you don't actually see or realise when lying there screaming in pain.

mears · 10/06/2005 17:35

What are your details Nish so we know it is you? What number baby is it for you. Hospital or homebirth. By the way, what number was last night's programme as that is the first one i have seen.

Rochwen · 10/06/2005 17:56

Mears, I think it was programme No 3 last Monday.

I have to admit that I like the programme more and more. The firt one just freaked me out but the other two were much easier to watch.

It also broke my heart to see the mother and baby seperated. How can anyone go through birth knowing that they will have to give the baby away. Poor girl !

RTKangaMummy · 13/06/2005 19:33

SoupDragon · 13/06/2005 20:18

RTKangaMummy · 13/06/2005 20:22

OK soupy you are quite entitled to do as you please

It is just that people then say

"oh no I forgot that was on last night"

SoupDragon · 13/06/2005 20:23

Eh? Forget what? No idea what you're on about...

RTKangaMummy · 13/06/2005 20:24

pmsl @ soupy

SoupDragon · 13/06/2005 20:24

Generally speaking, nothing short of an electric shock up the $$$$ will make me remember something on time. I usually "remember" by accident.
