Tee2072 · 04/06/2009 08:34

JJ yes it can be hereditary, and doesn't have to be because you're overweight. I had a man in my first 'you have Type II diabetes class' who was thin as a rail and yet had Type II. Its really classed based on the way you use or don't use insulin. Type II are insulin resistant, i.e. you make insulin but your body doesn't use it right. Type I doesn't make insulin at all or in very small amounts.

johnworf · 04/06/2009 08:51

tee yep, agree but you can 'up' your risk of getting type 2 onset if you're overweight (like JJ's FiL).

My insulin stopped as soon as K was born too. What a blessed relief that was!

iris bloody hell. What lovely things you have running through your family line! I get free eye tests as glaucoma is in my line; dad has it and his mother had it so I'm hoping I'll be the one that it skips

Reminds me, we have K's eye review at the end of this month so we'll be finding out if she's getting specs

Re shoes. I cannot wear anything between my toes. It rubs and it hurts My children have never been able to wear fashion shoes as children as they have wide feet (both boys are H fitting - high insteps). DSS is also H fitting and he has to wear insoles from the hospital as he has flat feet and tight calves.

ermintrude13 · 04/06/2009 09:18

Neddie I have a picture of you trying to cover a mare and it's not a pretty one. Let Mr Horse do the deed . And keep out of the way of those huge swinging - hooves!

JW well done your boy, those grades are fantastic! [proud mummy emoticon]. You are obviously far too nice a mum; I've no doubt mine will do what I and all my sisters did and get at least a couple of hours of motorway between them and the family home when they leave

JJ Hope today goes really well and that the paed. is a good un.

Iris sounds like a good appt, good news about the GD

DD's school is shut for polling so I need to get her to phone a friend and arrange something before she nags me to death...

heron22 · 04/06/2009 09:48

iris good news about the GD i had GD when preg with LO. all fine now tho.
and yes, the doc kept telling me how i am at risk of type 2. so am losing the weight.

got so used to not taking sugar during pregnancy, that i dont take it now either. which is good.

another lovely day here, bright and sunny!
anyone watched the apprentice last night?
am going to watch it now in bbc iplayer.

Tee2072 · 04/06/2009 09:55

I watched it heron and was totally shocked by the outcome!!

johnworf · 04/06/2009 10:12

Half watched The Apprentice last night heron. Tbh it bores me now. Think it's been overdone and the people they pick are like something from a pantomime. The Debra person who was sacked last night made me want to punch her in the face. Horrid woman. Worked with the likes of her in the past and almost come to blows. Strikes me as a sociopath

ermintrude I was encouraging DS#2 to live uni life in another town/city but Salford is doing the course he wants and has a good reputation for it. I can't really argue with that can I? Also, he'll be going on industrial placement during his course and says the companies they send you to in Manchester are good and have a high rate of keeping them after they finish.

I think the real reason though is that I'm not far away to offer meals. These boys like their home comforts far too much and are not ready to rough it as 'real' students

mrsboogie · 04/06/2009 10:22

mornin all

Yeah I know all that about the shoes but I love buing them!! Have bought D about seven or eight pairs since he was born, some of which he has worn once and some never at all. He will probably only wear these (yeah they are en route ) a couple of times as he usually takes them off to have a good old chew on them after a few minutes. I wouldn't have him wearing shoes on any sort of regular basis especially when he is walking but the odd day here and there won't hurt. It'll be Startrite all the way when he is actually wearing shoes properly.

jw well done on the brainbox son!

jj good luck with the app - dying to know what's said..fingers crossed its good.

iris that is interesting that you managed to escape the GD this time. I am in the same position re now being predisposed towards Type II which is why I am trying to lose weight too.

ermintrude13 · 04/06/2009 10:24

JW that's what I mean; you're always doing roast dinners; what boy could resist? Whereas by the time I hit 18 it really was time to put some miles between me and my mother. We're the better for it now I reckon, because we were just winding each other up. Great if that's not the family dynamic though - I'm going to try to be nicer and more patient with my DD but can see her making the kind of faces I probably made and fear I might repeat the patterns...

FloriaTosca · 04/06/2009 11:34

JW congrats to DS2, fab results and glad K seems ok after her jabs.
Nice that you get on so well with your children that they don't want to go far. Like Ermintrude I really needed to get away from my Mum at 18 as we were winding eachother up, but the best college for me was here in Manchester so the cycle never got broken because I didn't get away properly until I was mid 20s...and we now have a very 'wary' relationship, we both love eachother but have to tread as if on eggshells when sharing space for any length of time.
Fab news Iris
All you ladies losing weight so brilliantly put me to shame...I had GD(boarder line, no need for insulin)too, it went immediately after delivering A. but I also got the warnings about developing type II...have I buckled down and done something about this excess 3 stones? ...no!.... can you get a prescription for some gumption on the NHS?
I'll ask after I have been to excersise my democratic right to stand in a polling booth and try to decide which of the candidates is actually interested in anything but themselves

heron22 · 04/06/2009 12:14

jw arggghhhh! i read your post before finishing watching the episode! but glad to read that cow debra got the boot

BonzoDoodah · 04/06/2009 12:25

Florida mmmmmmmmm at all those prunes - espesh the choc coated ones .... mmmmmmm

ermintrude - I am a real woman - I have the Christmas book! Thanks!

Tee - splutter and cough at the Coworker .. the very same that didn't even give you a card when you left? The ones that just let you walk out of the door on your last day without even a sniff ... well I'd tell them all to %&*$ right off.

jj good luck with the assessment. Hope she can tell you something useful!

MrsB re Wants ... would prefer the wrapped items on the bottom right of the page ....

Super news Iris good escape!

JW swotty son - brilliant!!! And LALALALALALALA fingers in ears not listening ... not watched The Apprentice Yet ... DON'T want to know what happens LALALALALALALA

Just spoke to sister 1- she is a little sore, having some contractions but otherwise fine. She knows she is having another boy, which she is a little upset about.

Now am really worried about sister 3, who has had three C sections and lives in a developing country with limited medical facilities, had a scar infection after the last c section, and has a fairly lackadaisical attitude to modern medicine such as antibiotics (her refusal to take them led to her developing the scar infection last time).

johnworf · 04/06/2009 13:36

Awwww really sorry I said who went. Apols ladies

duchesse that's rather worrying about your other sister and the CS's. Glad that the amnio went well but why is she upset about having a boy? Was she hoping for a girl?

DD#1 was telling me that a lot of her friends are voting BNP today which really concerns me. I shall be voting later but def not for those sorts. It would be a very worrying scenario to see them get any more seats.

duchesse · 04/06/2009 13:40

jw she has 2 boys and feels a little outnumbered at times I think.

ermintrude13 · 04/06/2009 13:44

God JW that's all we need, a lot of Young People with kneejerk reactions going all fascist on our asses. Like floria I'm dreading standing there trying to work out the least sh*ite option, but will take DC with me like the Blessed John Humphrys took his son, to show them democracy in action.

All 3 major parties have MPs who've abused the system appallingly - I bet Nick Clegg is kicking himself for not having reined his lot in years ago because if the Lib Dems could have demonstrated their squeaky cleanness they'd have got Lab and Con votes.

May have to be the Greens, although on the leaflet they are a smug-looking beardy (yes, both of them) married couple. But at least their policies are benign. Tsk, it's most depressing.

johnworf · 04/06/2009 14:03

ermintrude it's most def knee jerk but scary too.

I'll be voting Tory again. Never thought I would do in this lifetime as I've been a lifelong Labour supporter. Bury Labour MP, David Chayter, has resigned before pushed. As for the Salford MP Hazel Blears....the word 'crook' springs to mind

ermintrude13 · 04/06/2009 14:19

Going Tory isn't going to happen here, I'm a lifelong lefty, but Labour certainly aren't keeping my vote just at the moment. I guess your local Conservatives haven't had their moats cleaned recently? Ken Clarke is our MP (Rushcliffe constituency, large conservative rural population despite the much more liberal, educated, even boho West Bridgford at its core ) and he's been named and shamed by Cameron already. Tis a big fat mess, the lot of it .

johnworf · 04/06/2009 14:26

Yes, it's a quandry who to pick as they're all dishonest. However, not voting is not an option as then the bloody BNP might get in!

Tee2072 · 04/06/2009 15:50

Seeing as I am not a UK citizen I do not, and cannot vote.

However, if I did and could? I have no idea who I would vote for. I do know that my husband has publicly stated that this the first time ever he will vote Conservative. And he's actually a little annoyed that the BNP has no NI candidate, just so he can vote against that person.

As much as US politics can suck, at least there are only ever two serious candidates for most things!

ermintrude13 · 04/06/2009 16:01

Just got back from polling station - which was deathly quiet and the poor people in there looked thrilled when me and DC wandered in - and we had the choice of BNP, UKIP, The British People's Something or Other and all manner of other nutjobs, so I was glad I went.

heron22 · 04/06/2009 18:32

jw no worries, i enjoyed the show even tho i knew who went.

iris66 · 04/06/2009 19:16

BNP/UKIP the rest are so self aggrandising and corrupt though it's a toughie green's a pretty colour

johnworf · 04/06/2009 19:41

JJ please drop in when you can and let us know how you got on with Iris {smile]

heron22 · 04/06/2009 19:44

i have to say that i did not vote today. just did not know who to vote for.

i feel the same way as you iris and so i postponed it and postponed it and now the polling station is closed.

hedgepig · 04/06/2009 19:55

I took Ollie to vote today, he was very impressed with the length of the European Paper, but I did not let him chew it We have had a bit of a a sqwarky/clingly day today so I am feeling a bit frazzled.

Iris well done on the GD.

JJ well done your boy, and you can buy a new outfit for his award ceremony (if they have one), how splendid.

I'm trying to decide if I will put an application in to be a school governor but I'm not quite sure why I want to do it. I have some thinking to do this evening.
