sorry to hear your news, janz. All the best for your discussions with your dh.

my heart was in my mouth yesterday at first scan , but thankfully all was well. phew.

Hayls · 30/06/2003 08:24

Now coming into week 12 and starting to feel slightly better, although bit of weight and yet my stomach is definitely getting bigger(nothing zips up any more). I've been told that i won't have a scan until 18 weeks but lots of other people have told me they are having one at 12 weeks as well- does this just vary from county to county?

Hayls · 30/06/2003 08:25

Missed a couple of words out!I meant to say that I've lost a bit of weight!

marsup · 07/07/2003 17:13

This thread seems to have gone quiet... has everyone else discovered they're also due in December after all? My date is 31 Dec so I'm sort of borderline.

Hayls, I lost a bit of weight at first too and now am just back to my normal weight (but 15 weeks pregnant). I have quite a bump though and I'm eating constantly, so I don't think I should be worrying - should I? I think it's just that I've gone off fatty food and don't like sugar and chocolate as much as normal (it all makes me queasy) so I just seem to want to eat ultra-healthy vegetarian stodgy stuff all day long (including midnight snacks). Maybe some babies just have very high metabolic rates and wriggle around so much they burn everything up? I don't know, it's all new to me.

Re scans, I was also told my first scan would be at 19/20 weeks as I am not quite 35. We paid to have a 12 week scan, £150 - and it was definitely worth it, the chances of Downs' are very low which has reassured me a lot. Not very fair though, as apparently in some areas the 12 week scan is paid for by NHS.

tinyfeet · 07/07/2003 17:20

hi marsup, i'm due on december 25. I wouldn't worry about your weight so much, I'm sure your doctor also says not to worry. I have friends who have only gained 10 pounds during their entire pregnancy and they had fine healthy babies. The target is supposedly around 25 to 30 pounds, but everyone is different, I think.

Hayls · 08/07/2003 17:11

Not sure where everybody else is or whether they've found out they're actually due in December but as far as I know I'm still due in January! Perhaps lots of people are on holiday?! My weight seems to have settled a bit- although I haven't put any on I haven't lost any more so might (maybe) stop worrying quite as much!

Hayls · 08/07/2003 17:13

P.S tinyfeet, wouldn't that be a lovely Christmas present!

tinyfeet · 08/07/2003 17:42

hi Hayls, I was late with DD, so my doctor said it is likely I will be late with this one too. I'm hoping for January. My weight has also remained pretty much the same, although my bump is bigger and higher, and I think I look pregnant now (rather than fat). Don't know where everyone is either. . .

misspastry · 09/07/2003 20:52

ive just found this thread, i'm due on 8th of Jan, already have ds who is 12 months, will be 18mths in jan, is anyone having second baby and are you worrying about how you will cope!

I'm so sorry to hear the bad news of a lost baby at six weeks, just goes to show, they say one in four pg ends in miscarriage,

to change the subject i'd love to hear about foetal movements, 2'nd time around, i had tickles at 12 weeks? what about everyone else?, talk soon,

tinyfeet · 09/07/2003 20:57

hi misspastry, don't know why this thread has been so quiet lately. I have a 15 month old - she will be 21 months when I give birth. I am worried about how I will cope. This morning I was taking a shower, and I was wondering about how I would do that if DD were awake with the new little one. I haven't had much at all by way of foetal movements, but I did hear a good heartbeat when I went to my last doctor appointment. I will find out the sex in a few weeks and am very excited about that. We are hoping for a boy, but will be happy with a healthy baby of either gender.

Hayls · 12/07/2003 14:51

Does anybody have some advice? I'm 12+3 and the midwife heard the baby's heartbeat yesterday. As my dh couldn't make it she came back out today to let him hear but couldn't pick it up. SHe came back 4 hours later to try again when hopefully I 'd have a full bladder (which I did) but still no luck. Although she said not to worry and has made an appointment for me to go back at 14 weeks I am really worried. I can't understand how we could hear it yesterday and not today and also where it could be 'hiding' as the midwife thought was the case. Dh has tried to reassure me by saying that I would know if something had gone wrong since yesterday and that it was probably just luck that we found it the first time but I'm not very rational at the moment. Does anybody have any ideas/ suggestions?

Oakmaiden · 12/07/2003 18:10

It is not easy to find the fetal heart at 12 weeks - and not unusual to fail to find it. The baby could be hiding in behind your pubic bone (or it's back could be there) and then you wouldn't be able to hear it at all. There is every chance that there is no problem at all, and it is very unlikely that there is a problem. It is just quite difficult to find, that's all. try not to worry about it - it should be easier to find by 14 weeks.

marsup · 14/07/2003 13:36

Hi again Hayls -

I just went in for a blood test at 15+5 and I asked the midwife if she could listen for a hearbeat just to reassure me the baby was still ok. She said it was very unusual to be able to hear a heartbeat at 15 weeks (!), but she did do a brief extra scan for me so I know the baby is still moving. Sounds like you were very lucky to hear yours at 12 weeks. It is scary though, isn't it - there is no sign of anything living and you have to keep going on faith. Misspastry is the lucky one! (but I'm not sure I'd recognise a 'tickle' if I felt one).

A query for all about giddiness: I seem to have got through the first trimester without anything except a bit of queasiness, but this morning I nearly passed out on the way to work and couldn't see anything for a few minutes (just bright flashing lights). I sat down and put my head down and it went away. My pregnancy book says to expect this in the first two months, but at just 16 weeks this seems a bit late. should I be panicking and ringing the doctor?

Hayls · 14/07/2003 17:11

Marsup- I'm 12+5 and have dizzy spells every now and again. I'm sure it's because of the heat at the moment but I haven't worried too much. Even before the nice weather came along I had it but mainly when I stood up too quickly or was hungry or thirsty. Glad to hear everything's Ok and sorry if this isn't very helpful!

tinyfeet · 14/07/2003 17:21

marsup - I would just try to make sure to drink plenty of water and to eat regularly.

misspastry · 15/07/2003 20:27

hi everyone,

feeling dizzy, might be something to do with it being 90 degrees today! no fun at work and out in car with no air con!!, i usually love the sun, but this past week its just made me feel sick again, thought i'd got through nausea, being 15 weeks tomorrow!

anyone got names yet or is it too early?

misspastry · 15/07/2003 20:30

oops just seen that hayls has already thought about the weather, oh well, not to worry

tinyfeet · 15/07/2003 20:36

No names yet really since we'll be finding out soon if it's a boy or a girl. what about you?

marsup · 17/07/2003 17:08

I'm pretty sure you're all right, it must have been just the heat making me dizzy. Like Misspastry I usually enjoy warm weather so it hadn't occurred to me that I might react like that.

We'd got a name for our baby already and have been calling him (probably) that for weeks, but now I regret it. I've just had the results of the alpha-feta-protein test and there is a very high chance of Down's syndrome. I have another scan on Monday and then we'll have to decide whether or not to go on to amniocentesis. Weeks ago I was pretty sure I'd go ahead with it but having got this far and having a name for him makes it seem like risking murder. Dh is very much in favour of amnio and indeed any checkup rather than risking Down's syndrome. I thought I would be too, but now I'm not so sure. All the statistics seem so contradictory and confusing, I'm not sure what to do.

Hayls · 18/07/2003 14:33

Marsup, afraid I don't really know much about it but realise that it must be a huge issue to consider and you have lots of different thoughts in your head (and dh) Just wanted to let you know I hope you're OK and that if you do have to make a decision about the amnio I'm sure it will be the right one, whatever it is. xx

marsup · 22/07/2003 12:54

Hayls, I'm pretty sure I won't have the amnio now We had another scan in the end and the doctor did a 'combined risk' score taking into account the nuchal scan results, the blood test and what she could see from the scan, and overall the good nuchal and follow-up scan results balance out the blood test so the end result is pretty reassuring. Also I have heard since (from various sources) that the alphafetoprotein test is very unreliable and one particular rumour has it that the government is thinking of revising the way the test is done, since different laboratories doing it around the country come up with different results for the same sample.

It was all very stressful, and dh is still very anguished at the idea of having a Downs baby. I think if it were possible to go back and do it all differently I would have a nuchal test, but not the alphafetoprotein one, which is apparently less reliable. Has anyone else gone ahead with an amniocentesis? I still get panic attacks at the mere thought!

Hayls · 22/07/2003 13:04

Marsup, really pleased for you. Take care. How is everybody else?

misspastry · 01/08/2003 18:18

we are all fine thanks for asking, ive been having difficulty finding this thread, the search doesn't seem to pick it up, any clues from others how to access thread easily.

i had to get out my maternity trousers this am, the thought of now having to wear these until the new year is not that great, i'll have to buy shoes as retail therapy.

are folks feeling tired or has anyone hit the i'm blooming stage?

Hayls · 04/08/2003 13:57

This thread has gone really quiet recently! Where has everybody gone? Has evrybody found out that they're actually due in December or February? Everything is going OK with me (touch wood) other than some lower back pain and tiredness. Does anybody else find that time is passing really quickly now? Before 12 weeks it dragged by for me but now I'm struggling to keep up!

lucy123 · 04/08/2003 14:43

I'm still due in Jan!

Completely fed up with being pregnant, though don't have any negative symptoms. In fact i keep forgetting and doing things like eating rare steak and taking in stray cats. Roll on January.
