Marsup - when you have your scans tends to be dictated by where you live, but you and your families history can change it. Where I live now do them at 12 and 20 weeks where as where I used to live only did one at 20 weeks. However last time I had one at 6 weeks due to bleeding, and 2 every 3 weeks from 20 weeks due to my son having situs inversus (back to front inside!) and a suspected hole in the heart. A friend also had one at 12 weeks as she was unsure of her dates. I guess the more routine the pregnancy the fewer you will have.

Don't worry about your weight just let it do what it wants. It's quite common even to lose weight at first. Last time I lost 1/2 stone and apart from gaining that 1/2 stone back did not start to gain any more till 27 weeks then it just piled on!. I am 10+ weeks now and am 1lb less than I started at.

Presto - If your so much worse than last time it may well be twins - I've read people tend to feel v. sick when carrying two, either that or it could be a girl! What do you fell about having twins? We have twins on my side and dh is convinced I'm having twin girls this time, I do not think I'm sick enough for that to be the case, but would be v. happy if it was true.

Absolutebegginer + loubie732 your not alone with the feeling that it is still all so fragile yet. I never really thought about it with DS, but with this baby I just can't let it sink in untill I've seen the baby on the scan (19th) and know it's ok. I never expected to feel this way and I don't know why I do!

Tinyfeet - roll on two weeks. I've only had two days where I have actualy been sick, but as ds is only 17months it's hard work. The first day I was sick 11 times so dh had to come home to look after ds, and the second was yesterday and ds grabed my hand and tried to drag me out of the bathroom mid vomit!! It's the triedness that is killing me at the moment, I can't wait to get some energy back so we can go out again. Ds is missing it so much he keeps takeing me to the door and saying out, but I'm just not up to it everyday.

marsup · 05/06/2003 14:28

Thanks Willum, that is reassuring. It sounds as though the first months are really unpredictable and almost any combination of side effects is possible.

What is this about being sicker if it is a girl? Haven't heard that one before! Good news for my partner, I guess, as he wants a boy.

Presto · 05/06/2003 17:48

Hi, I feel absolutely petrified about the scan tomorrow and if it's twins I don't know how I'd cope.
My boys are so active that I have to take them out no matter what I feel like.
The other day I was driving home and felt dreadfully sick so stepped on it to get to a layby and got stopped for speeding!, the policeman was unsympathetic to my pleas of 'but I was about to be sick' then I vomited in a bag in the car - I should have vomited over him! so that's a fine I could well do without.
I'm prattling on cos I'm worried about tomorrow - ahhhh

lucy123 · 05/06/2003 18:42

How did I miss this thread?

Congratulations everyone and I would be glad to join you (due 12th Jan according to some website that isn't mumsnet)

Don't have my scan appt yet, but it should be about 12 weeks and then I get about 4 more. Very medicalised, childbirth is here (Spain). There is no health visitor though and obviously my family aren't close so my biggest worry is how do i cope with a new baba and a 20 month old?

Presto · 06/06/2003 13:11

Hooray, only 1 baby in there - what a relief.

heidifran · 08/06/2003 19:30

Hi all!

I've just joined Mumsnet. Found out this week that I'm pregnant for the 3rd time! EDD 25/01/04. I've two boys already, so this is last chance for a girl - I'm being sterilised after this baby (if all goes to plan).

Congratulations everyone and hope to catch up with you soon.

Hayls · 09/06/2003 16:05

Recently found out that I'm expecting my first on 21st January. I'm not feeling too good at the moment, although I haven't been sick I feel really nauseous and tired and keep going to the loo. I have cramps evry now and again, which my midwife has told me is quite normal and is most likely trapped wind- does anybody else suffer from this? (I'm 8 weeks). It still hasn't sunk in yet!

tinyfeet · 09/06/2003 17:20

Congratulations all! Especially Presto on your scan. Hayls - I also have abdominal pains - and it is in fact "trapped wind." The cure is to go to the toilet and let it out - you'll be shocked by how loud your wind can be. It's really quite embarrassing.

marsup · 10/06/2003 15:27

Hello to all. Hayls and Tinyfeet - I had some abdominal cramping up till last week (my week 10) that I think was due to some sort of ligaments stretching. It was on both sides and particularly sore (jabbing pain) when I sneezed - and it went away when I managed to relax the muscles. So it might not be all wind!

Now in week 11, my clothes are getting tight and I have quite a pot belly but I still haven't put on any weight. Is there something wrong with my scales or is my round belly all hot air?! Still can't quite believe it is happening.

tinyfeet · 10/06/2003 15:55

Hi Marsup, I haven't gained any weight either, although I never lost 10 pounds of extra post-pregnancy weight after DD. I thought that the nausea had ended last week, but sadly, it has returned. I just want the nausea to be over and am not concerned with weight-gain at all. I don't look pregnant at all, in my opinion, although I am 12 weeks. I can't stop yawning though and can't breathe through my nose. Feeling quite pathetic right now. Hope you are doing better than me.

marsup · 11/06/2003 11:11

Tinyfeet, I'm not surprised the nausea is getting you down if you have it all the time. I only get it some days and although I haven't vomited at all it's amazing how much feeling queasy can put you off life. I'm glad you said that about not breathing through the nose, too - I've been noticing that and find it rather odd. I thought it might be my hayfever. I am doing some sport and walking etc without any problems but have my mouth open all the time (v. elegant fly-catching mode). Is it just because we need more oxygen? Anyway, hope you're feeling better today.

naughtynoonoo · 11/06/2003 21:28

Hi, hope it's ok to gatecrash this site, just found out I am 5/6 weeks pregnants, think it is due around 10th Feb, silly me put my period date in my diary for April but forgot about putting it in for May, bloody typical. This will be my 2nd, have a dd who will be 2 in August. I feel like I have twins inside me a feel and look 12 weeks pregnant, seems to be a lot more rumblings going on this time round. This baby wasn't planned until next year as I am on AD's, but stopped taking them yesterday, so hopefully things will go ok with me and baby. DD is kissing my belly in the morning and I have already got DH listening to my belly, "its just food sounds!". Anyway look forward to this journey with you all and congrats and good luck to you all.

M2T · 11/06/2003 21:34

Congratulations Naughtynoonoo!

willum · 12/06/2003 13:51

Congrats and welcome to the newcomers. I can't belive how many we have gained in such a small amount of time!

Presto - fantastic news that there is only one!

Marsup - the idea is that if it's a girl there is more eastrogen (sp?) and that's the hormone that makes you sick. Hoping it's not always true though as I am less sick than with ds and we want a girl! We used the trying for a girl timeings, my feelings are that it is a girl but I am a bit worried that we where to close to OV to be sure.

I've got those horrid cramps too and it deffinately wind! Had the stretching pains last time and from what I remember they where more localised than the cramps.

Presto · 12/06/2003 16:44

Are any of you going to find out what gender baby you are having?
Particularly those of us with boys already - ie Heidifran?
I probably will and then my DH & I will decide not to tell anyone, then I'll tell all my friends one by one (in true girly secret form). I've heard that if you have 2 of the same sex then you are more likely to continue having the same sex children. Has anyone else heard this?
I'm in week 10 now and not feeling sick anymore.
Hope you are all doing well!

willum · 12/06/2003 20:47

We are deffinately up for finding out the sex, we did with ds and found it helped us bond.

I have not heard the 2 of the same sex thing, but based on the whole theory of how you get girls or boy etc. I can see how it can happen. Basically if your partner has a very high sperm count you will struggle to have a girl and if your partner has a very low sperm count you will struggle to have a boy.

Presto · 18/06/2003 13:24

What's happened to all the due Jan 2004 mums? Hope you are all well. I have been having dreadful headache - has anyone tried acupressure? I've heard it's very good especially if you are pregnant.

tinyfeet · 18/06/2003 14:00

I haven't tried accupressure, but my doctor recommended extra strength Tylenol when I had headaches last time. I'm just tired all the time - I feel like I sleep every chance I get, and can barely make it through the work day. The smell of coffee makes me sick and I know we're supposed to stay off caffeine anyway. Can anyone recommend something for a pick-me-up?

marsup · 18/06/2003 16:16

Tinyfeet, I have also been sleeping a lot and think I could sleep 20hours/24 if I had the chance. Don't know whether it's a serious coffee susbstitute, but I've got quite fond of a Chinese ginger tea bought from my local Chinese shop. It's really just granules of ginger and sugar, which dissolve in hot water. It's very strong and sweet and gets rid of nausea; maybe the sugar gives you a bit of a lift, the ginger is supposed to as well. Or maybe it is just the liquid equivalent of comfort food. Still, better than nothing.

Presto - headaches sound bad, I was told to take Panadol as apparently that is ok. I went out for the day on Saturday and spent too long in the sun and didn't eat enough and had a headache for 2 days - probably not linked to your problem but I feel I am more vulnerable to sunlight and glare than usual. (Insert "I should have gone to specsavers" ad here - probably time for me to buy some sunglasses!).

naughtynoonoo · 18/06/2003 17:01

I have totally gone off tea and coffee, with DD I stayed on it, but this time round I am not interested, I am just drinking gallons of water - which is good - but also eating tonsof food. With dd I suffered terrible headaches and the mw suggested water as it is a sign of dehydration. I am also feeling completly hungover, oh the joys of drinking sooo much water!!

tinyfeet · 18/06/2003 18:23

Thanks, Marsup. Something sweet would be nice, but like naughtynoonoo, I have gone off both coffee and tea. I would drink water, if I didn't worry that I would get sick from drinking water. . .

naughtynoonoo · 18/06/2003 23:01

I wonder if going off tea & coffee has any significance to being a boy or girl. Saw some girlfriends tonight and two of them also pregnant have foudn out they are having boys (both wanted girls), I am going to wait for the surprise at the end of it (hopefully)>

M2T · 18/06/2003 23:03

NNN - I went of coffee and tea! The smell made me want to barf for most of mt pregnancy and I LUUURRRRV Coffee!

I had a boy BTW. So maybe there is some truth in it.

tinyfeet · 19/06/2003 02:57

I've gone off coffee and tea when pregnant with dd and now again. So don't know if it means anything. We're going to find out though in 3 weeks!

naughtynoonoo · 19/06/2003 12:31

MTM - I want a girl - shall I force the tea and coffee down me, somebody also say if you are constantly stuffing your face you will also have a boy - I am doing this, but am trying to cut down a bit today -
