I keep seeing references on MN to symptoms of pregnancy that may or not be scientific/imaginery/anecdotal and thought it would be interesting to gather them in one place.

I remember one person who had a theory that her one ankle would swell almost immediately, or something similar.

What little body quirks did you notice shortly after you became pregnant?

Definately the smell one for me. In my third pregnancy (when you can't fart about and stay in bed till ten because you now have other children to look after - doh!) I almost permanently walked round with a piece of toilet paper stuffed up each nostril. I had to do it first thing in the morning because every smell would make me vomit, and whenever I was cooking a meal. If someone came round unexpectedly, they would get a shock!

Good things - my nails and hair grew thicker and faster (although then my hair fell out in handfuls once I stopped breastfeeding).

Bad things - sickness all day till about 20 weeks, exhaustedness, SPD (where your pelvic muscles relax far too early in the pregnancy so you have horrible back pain and have to wear a support belt to keep your middle parts together - an advantage at the birth tho, because my son just popped out ) and memory loss. My brain stopped functioning even before I knewe I was pregnant the first time.

Had to constantly eat to stop the nausea but only managed dry salty things - ate lots of crisps and crackers. Blergh.

I was on holiday just before I found out that I was pg and I must have fallen over or slipped at least once or twice a day every single day of my holiday! It was highly amusing to everybody else but not for me.

Also wine tasted like poison!

So am I the only one who gets a hairy belly?!

OMG I'm a freak!!!!

Glad I'm not the only one about the toothpaste thing - I'm sure DH thought I was mad.

Also had the super smell thing going on - I could smell dog poo for miles around - not the greatest smell at the best of times.

Could only drink ice cold drinks

TweetleBeetle · 28/04/2009 17:31

Oh yes forgot about killer farts! Worse than period farts which are also evil!

AnnieGetYourGun78 · 28/04/2009 20:42

With first pregnancy - I could smell myself constantly - horrible - I smelt of oats for about 8 weeks!

Wigglesworth · 28/04/2009 20:49

Brushing your teeth makes you gag, an insane craving for ready salted crisps, an intense dislike for spag bol (having previously loved it) and any advertisements for spag bol make you physically wretch.

TweetleBeetle · 29/04/2009 17:56

So I am the only one who gets a hairy belly!!!!!!

Ebb · 29/04/2009 23:31

No I got a hairy belly too so I will join you in Freakdom! I am blonde though so wasn't too obvious. I did wonder if it was because I was carrying a boy?

Definately had the mega sore nipples and I craved milk and depressingly went off chocolate!

Mind you this thread is freaking me slightly as I have several of these 'symptoms'. Roll on AF!

PinkTulips · 30/04/2009 12:13

another hairy belly here.

ds1 told me when i was about 6 months with ds2 'i love your fluffy tummy mommy'

pebblebeach · 30/04/2009 12:48

Oh oh, can I join the hairy belly club .... my dd strokes it

Gillyan · 30/04/2009 13:31

My wee smelt funny and I kept having to go for little wee's, that was before I had even missed my period.

pennywp · 30/04/2009 17:57

I'm only 5 weeks into my first pregnancy and I just laughed so hard that I started crying.... Maybe that's just me!!

June2009 · 30/04/2009 19:37

I am covered in tiny little blood freckles on my arms, my legs and my belly.
I sneeze a hell of a lot more than I used to, for no reason.

JoseyM · 01/05/2009 20:45

Found out im pregnant yesterday with our first but Hubby knew cause my nipples got really big and my boobs were so so sore and achy/ Loer back pain and really blocked nose...i sound like i have a cold! Oh and the cat food smells rank!

Durdy · 11/09/2009 22:24

lol..oh so true

pushmepullyou · 11/09/2009 22:45

My fanjo/lips/bits/vulva/ladygarden (oh the difficulty of finding a pleasant word) went purply brown within 10 days of conception. Mentioned it to my mum and she said back in the 'old days' her GP used to diagnose early pregnancy by purple 'bits'.

memorylapse · 12/09/2009 10:48

my boobs looked massive and I could smell someone lighting a fag up in the next street

shakespearssister · 12/09/2009 20:09

I'm just in my 5th week of first pregnancy and have have very itchy boobs - not sore - since conception.
I also have a really puffy neck since a few days.

pigleychez · 13/09/2009 09:08

Greasy hair! Looks like ive been dunked in grease even when I have just watched my hair!

Itchy eyes- But thats probably from rubbing them too much from tiredness.

I too get a tight chest for a few days

alexw · 13/09/2009 12:03

Becoming really clumsy - keep dropping things, spilling tea etc... Cold all the time and crying at stupid things like a clip from Corrie when I don't even watch it normally and wasn't really sure what was going on.

charchite93 · 08/09/2014 23:27

So I'm 11 weeks and these are my symptoms so far...

CONSTANT nausea. Everything makes me heave. I'm never sick, I just retch.
Ridiculously itchy scalp. Just on my crown, it feels like there's a colony of headlice harbouring there and I'm literally scratching my head til it bleeds.
Braxton Hicks type pains after sex, feels absolutely horrendous and I nearly passed out with the pain so I'm feeling super confident about labour Hmm
My boobs hurt SO MUCH and my nipples seem to look different every day. Like, darker. Then lighter. Then darker again. Weird.
Super tired at all times. Everything exhausts me beyond words.

Please tell me everyone else gets this Confused

MrsPatMustard · 09/09/2014 07:04

Burped and farted like a dairy cow for first 3 months. Very feminineGrin

nameuschangeus · 09/09/2014 07:07

Steppe mum - I had the gagging on toothpaste thing too, plus super sense of smell.

squizita · 09/09/2014 09:01

Snot. Gross snot.
