I keep seeing references on MN to symptoms of pregnancy that may or not be scientific/imaginery/anecdotal and thought it would be interesting to gather them in one place.

I remember one person who had a theory that her one ankle would swell almost immediately, or something similar.

What little body quirks did you notice shortly after you became pregnant?

couldn't stand the taste or smell of tea/coffee/alcohol even on other people-coupled with a nose like a fucking bloodhound.i also looked in the mirror and had a puffy neck,at which point i wasn't late but i certainly was pregnant.
i also wanted ice and creosote-big time-right form the beginning...everytime

SparklingSarah · 26/04/2009 20:41

I can't stand the smell of coffee the faintest sniff or taste and bleuurgghh !

crabby · 26/04/2009 21:06

Thirst thirst thirst.

And vomiting when brushed teeth which got worse and worse until 3rd trimester.
Non-minty tooth paste helped massivly. Banana was the best although in RL (ie not pregnant) this would make me wretch.

naturalblonde · 26/04/2009 21:13

Couldn't stand the smell of the George Foreman grill. I could still smell it had been used 2 days later, made me feel so sick.

RubyBlueberry · 26/04/2009 21:57

I forgot one, being allergic to hair removing wax for my underarms and all the skin peeling off >

nickymorris · 26/04/2009 21:59

First thing for me was feet and boobs going up a size (followed by ingrown toenail which required surgery caused by wearing shoes too small). I also had this feeling that i'd finally finished growing/developing; like my puberty hadn't quite finished before and now I was pg it had completed a process.

Then super sense of smell - couldn't be in a lift with someone who had smoked a cigarette

Then the gagging when anything non-food in my mouth. The worst was electrical tape which I bit to tear a piece off - thought i wasn't going to stop gagging EVER.

DH kept hoping that I'd turn into one of these cleaning mad women. Instead I went baking mad - we still have muffins in the freezer which I cooked when I was pregnant!

Hi I read somewhere that your nails harden when you are pregnant.

I have very soft nails which break easily... my very first inkling of my pregnancy was when I noticed my nails were a lot tougher than normal!

aristocat · 26/04/2009 23:53

had the vomiting too when brushing teeth
DS is nearly 7 now and still makes me gag, better if i do in the evening rather than morning.
WEIRD ??
THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY ME - LOL

GYo · 27/04/2009 02:17

before the positive test, about a week after conception- I had weirdest hot abdomen, right over my uterus and hot boobs. Even Dh could feel the temperature difference from rest of my body.

Eve4Walle · 27/04/2009 08:21

Both times I went off tea, which is odd as I drink lots of it usually.

With DS, DH was cooking some bacon and the smell actually made me vomit and it's never done that before or since. I hadn't done a test, I hadn't even missed a period but I just KNEW I was pregnant at that moment!

madmissy · 27/04/2009 08:30

tell you what i have a huge aversion to the dishwasher and the smell of it when its been cleaned bleuhhhh

RamblingRosa · 27/04/2009 10:51

Sudden desire/need to eat crisps. I'm usually more of a chocolate person but I had mad cravings for those thai sweet chilli crisps. Was wolfing them down like there was no tomorrow.

Also felt weirdly dizzy and tired at the same time every afternoon (around 4-5pm).

Breasts grew pretty immediately too.

aquavit · 27/04/2009 11:45

I got the usual things (acute sense of smell, nausea, shattering tiredness) at around 4 or 5 weeks, which is when I finally tested positive (had negative/inconclusive results before then).

But there were a couple of other things that started much earlier, that I didn't realise were indications at the time - one was tendency to make sighing noises, especially going to sleep/waking up (still doing this at 39 weeks!), and the other was fairly light bleeding about 9 days after conception, I think this is quite common. Unfortunately I thought it was my period and cheerfully went off boozing at a wedding in Spain...

gillythekid · 27/04/2009 15:45

Extreme dog nose, could smell EVERYTHING for 5 miles!

lainey2778 · 27/04/2009 16:47

I suffered from begining 2 end

blocked nose like hay fever.
nose bleeds
painful wrists like pressure points
wind like uve never heard b4
metalic taste
fainting feelings
gagging on toothpaste
palpetations but when it happened it felt like water ran out of my heart and through my chest..

mind u someone these could of been related to me having gestational diabetes of which i spent most of my preg in and out of hospital with

but have a healthy 7month old

katster37 · 27/04/2009 18:01

Am with you on the toothbrushing thing. Gross. I have also had an insane amount of saliva in my mouth. I have to keep a pot by the bed to spit into at night. How attractive - my lucky DH.

AliGrylls · 27/04/2009 18:34

Sinus problems. Always had a little allergy to my cat but the first 3 months of pregnancy I woke up every morning with a nose bleed. I did not stop sneezing. I had no sense of smell at all because I was permanently bunged up through sneezing. Still have it - only a month of pregnancy left to go now. Hoping it will resolve after I have the baby.

AliGrylls · 27/04/2009 18:35

Actually the thirst thing I am relating to now as well. Glad I am not the only one getting that. I can't stop drinking water.

PurlyQueen · 27/04/2009 19:55

Ditto the excess saliva. I had to keep a spit jar in my car (emptied after every journey, in case anyone's wondering).

One of my earliest symptoms was that I had no strength in my stomach. I could not do any crunches or sit-ups. My DS is 13 months old and I still suffer from this.

furrycat · 27/04/2009 20:02

With my second pregnancy I thought I had flu. I was about 10 dpo and felt knackered, slightly sick and headachy. I told my boss I was ill and going home. She asked what was wrong and when I told her she said "I had that at Christmas. I couldn't eat for a week." I realised that I was starving hungry and realisation dawned. On the way home I realised I could smell everyone's perfume from 100 yards away. I did a pregnancy test the next day but already knew what it would say!

walkinthewoods · 27/04/2009 20:48

Read about half the thread but for me I went off tea very early bleugh.

Also with both my pg's one of my big toe nails had a dent in them, and considering (I think) that they take 3 months to grow from the root (someone corrrect me if I'm wrong) it appeared around about the 3 month mark. I even mentioned it to mw. She told me to watch out if it happened again.

Also on a differnet tangent, the poster who mentioned the cat that wrapped itself around you...was t'other end for me. One of my friends babies, who had never previously gievn me ANY attention whatsover (she would have been about 18motnhs at the time) was all over me and cuddling me. I was overdue and that very day I gave birth.

VandT · 27/04/2009 20:59

Just had to post about sensitive nipples - during 1st pregnancy from about week 3 these caused me no end of pain. I was in Eastern Europe ( during the winter) doing a lot of travel. My nipples would get SO painful I would unashamedly walk round with my hands down my coat rubbing them to avoid the splitting pain I was experiencing. Oh, and I got my sister to send out some of those handwarmer tea bag things you put in your gloves - except I put them down my bra!

TALLULAHBELLE · 27/04/2009 21:41

Metallic taste but only for a day or two.

Heightened sense of smell, so much that a whiff of strong perfume, alcohol fumes etc would make me vomit.

PG nausea only alleviated by salt & vinegar Pringles.

Leg hair stopped growing - have heard that this is sign of having a girl (i have all girls) but probably old wives tale.

hoops997 · 27/04/2009 23:18

I seem to be hungry all of the time, even when I'm being horrendously sick, I'm thinking about my next meal.......what the hell is going on??

littlemiss26 · 28/04/2009 12:50

seriously dry skin - scalp, hands face. and the wierest one is a shooting ligament pain across my hip whenever i cough or sneeze - its incredibly painful for 10seconds and then goes away - i've had that with all three of my pregnancies, from the moment of conception!! had it four days ago and just knew i was pregnant again - did a test on sunday and bingo! i'm 4 weeks tommorrow
