I keep seeing references on MN to symptoms of pregnancy that may or not be scientific/imaginery/anecdotal and thought it would be interesting to gather them in one place.

I remember one person who had a theory that her one ankle would swell almost immediately, or something similar.

What little body quirks did you notice shortly after you became pregnant?

pobbletinosmum · 24/04/2009 22:30

A blocked up nose but not with anything i could blow out of it - had to squirt sudafed spray up it twice a day for 8 months or I couldn't breathe through it at all and therefore couldn't sleep. went away night after delivery. Don't know what I would have done if i hadn't discovered the spray or it wasn't invented, nothing else helped at all.

Everything in my house STINKS! I'm nearly 24 weeks and I still can't stand the fridge. And my daughter's breath makes me nauseous, and the carpet in the living room smells of dog and smelly feet, and I have to drive my children around with the car windows open. My poor family...

thell · 24/04/2009 23:26

One morning I woke up much earlier than usual, feeling very very thirsty, went to the bathroom to get a drink - suddenly felt really faint, but just for a few seconds, then it was gone. Must have been implantation

sb6699 · 24/04/2009 23:28

Tonsilitis has always been my first pregnancy symptom!

That and having lovely nails which are usually split and bitten any other time.

thell · 24/04/2009 23:33

oh, and later on in first and second trimesters I had recurrent cold sores.

During pg I got a real taste for cereals with loads of milk, having been a toast-for-breakfast girl. But then after the birth my dairy intolerance came back with a vengeance. P

hoochymama · 24/04/2009 23:47

linspins - excessive saliva - me too!!so awful, made me feel really sick.

also palpitations and getting really out of breath just walking across the room, never met anyone who had even heard of that!

but the very first sign that something was up, was waking in the night starving hungry, couldn't work it out to start with, but that symptom stayed with me til the end! couldn't go longer than 6 hours without needing to eat

PuppyMonkey · 25/04/2009 09:12

Both times I've been pregnant, I kept getting quite strong period type pains for several weeks - which I obviously thought meant I was about to come on. But I never did!

I also went off bananas big time and I am usually a huge fan.

Arcadie · 25/04/2009 09:16

yeah - Puppy had that too. Too tight undies when womb getting bigger I think!

redtabby · 25/04/2009 11:50

(I am preg at the moment). I have:

Incredible sense of smell, especially can't stand the cat food (which never usually bothers me).

Nipples terribly sensitive to cold, go rock hard and get very very painful, can't even walk past the freezer section in supermarket without shooting pains in my breasts. At home if I spend more than a few seconds in front of the fridge or if it is even slightly cool in a room, never mind cold, I have to go to my bedroom and blow dry my breasts to stop the pain.

Craving for milk and milk products all the time (even just plain glasses of milk, which I would never normally drink).

MsMargotBeauregarde · 25/04/2009 13:56

My lips became really dry and flakey and when I saw that in somebody else I guessed she was (early) pg too.

Before I'd even peed on a stick, I felt that feeling in my breasts like milk being let down. just for a second or two, but I knew then I was prg (at about 3+5!)

Also got heartburn as soon as I lay down (very early prg).

rainbowdays · 25/04/2009 14:30

I love that a couple of you have said about popping ears. I did a research study on it, that I am currently trying to get published, hearing is affected in pregnancy with some women !!!!

thell - interesting you said about the milk thing, I have a dairy intolerance that disappears when I am pg. It is my way of knowing that I am pg, I can tolerate dairy products!!!!! It stayed with me each time till about 4 months after giving birth, then I would be sick with milk again!

gillybeanie · 25/04/2009 14:47

super smell, also was on hol when first preg with DS, didnt know i was but really didnt feel like drinking, not like me at all at the time, but made myself drink vodka and rose wine(most nights) freaked out when found out i was preg(stopped straight away) luckily DS was perfect. Also the ease of giving up the ciggies, they felt alien in my mouth.

SandJsmum · 25/04/2009 16:09

I knew I was pregnant as I wanted to eat a bar of chocolate which is unlike me. My boyfriend said that I must be pregnant.

My urine is very very cloudy. My boobs hurt beyond belief, tired, burp all the time, put weight on at an alarmingly fast rate, gag up to 30 times whilst trying to brush my teeth and can no longer wear deodrant.

Absolute joy

rainbowdays, the ears thing is a definite pg symptom. I had fuddy ears all through last pg, and had a constant background hiss.

This time, around implantation, I had what I'd describe as 'dribbly'-feeling ears and dreadful dizziness if I moved my head off vertical.

hoochiemama I've been freezing cold during this pg and my last one (mmc) too. Bone-chillingly uncontrollably shivering cold.

have also had crazy dandruff - hadn't linked it to pg but think you lot must be right!

AnnasBananas · 25/04/2009 20:17

Yep, couldn't put anything non-food in my mouth eg holding keys/letters when hands full etc without gagging.

Bloked up nose too, that was hell at night.

Boobs so sore felt like I'd been kicked in the chest and that was at about 3.5 weeks when the HPT were still coming back negative.

ruthosaurus · 25/04/2009 20:30

I had to get maternity jeans at 7 weeks because I couldn't stand the pain of the waistband on my normal jeans that still fit digging in. At one point it was so bad I went to A&E and was really scared. Then I changed my trousers...

devonshiredumpling · 25/04/2009 21:17

my pg signs are very vivid dreams and waking up to find myself hitting the other half!! the other day i was being forced to marry my ex husband and running away to find a woman in the park burying a huge flip flop please explain that one to me?

mustrunmore · 25/04/2009 21:25

extreme tiredness, and constant period-type pain...

toddlerama · 25/04/2009 21:35

Both times

Extreme tiredness
Blocked nose
Vomiting if hungry
Vomiting when brushing teeth
Vomiting in car (you get the picture....)
Old knee injury flared up
'Pregnant dog nose' (my sister's terminology)
Achey bum
Craved milk

RubyBlueberry · 26/04/2009 00:10

My eyesight gets better when I'm preg, don't need to wear glasses to watch telly.

Numbing tiredness hitting like a sledgehammer at about 4pm

Migraines come back - I used 4head stick, cold patches, darkened room and resolve extra, that usually knowks them on the head (I don't usually drink caffeine so on these infrequent occassions I think it's ok)

Extra super duper strength pickled onions run for cover (I have been known to eat half a jar at one sitting)

Dry mouth

Leg hair not growing

Having the horn but DH waaaaaay too scared!!

HomeintheSun · 26/04/2009 11:12

I'm 12+4 weeks pregnant,
I've had the metal mouth thing,
my dry sensitive scalp is now fine,
I'm off coffee and sex,
I can smell everything really strongly
I have a really itchy dry patch under both my nipples.
I love edam cheese
I feel sick in the car if I'm not driving.
I feel really ill if I get sun burnt.

SpangleMaker · 26/04/2009 17:06

Dizziness, extreme thirst, freezing cold... dizziness went by 7w but thirst & cold lasted right through the first trimester.
