Hell, I've just found out I'm expecting No. 3 mid November, and am very excited. A bit scared too - I can't remember a thing! How can I possibly have done this twice already??? Hope more of you can join me soon!

susanmt - I presume you have been told that it would be advisable to have IV antibiotics in labour - benzylpenicillin - because of group B strep. That is advisable whether it is there on retseting later or not. Once it has been detected you should be treated as a carrier.
Sorry to hear you have had such a rotten time. As far as kidney stones and infections are concerned, are you being kept on a continual antibiotic for the rest of your pregnancy?

susanmt · 29/06/2003 01:36

mears - thanks for that. No, they haven't told me about the IV antibiotics, but I have an appointment with my own consultant on Thursday so we'll see what he has to say. By IV do you mean on a drip or just an IV injection? Whatever it is I'll do it, I don't want any harm to come to the baby, but I do like to be prepared.
I am on an antibiotic - have been taking cephalexin at night since week 8. It does funny things to my bowels, but again, I will do whatever it takes. I am also managing to drink more (9 pints of fluid today) and I am sure that will be helping. All I have to do now is see my own doc and check that he will be OK about me staying on the island to have the baby. The midwives were firly sure that it would be OK with him, but I want to hear it before I beleive it!

Susanmt ... I am just lurking on this thread ... like to keep up with everyone you know and just thought I would say welcome back (haven't seen you for a while) and sorry that you've had such a bad time .... I don't know anything about all of that stuff that you are going through but it sounds horrible ... hope things improve soon!
On the 'touching' thing and the rude comments ... I remember them so well when I was pg with DS ... I was like monkey and smile and then sulk for days when I got home.
How I wished to be like those celebrity pg women ... wearing normal clothes with a little bump peeping through between my trousers and top ... no chance ... I looked like an ocean liner from 20 weeks on!!!
Oh well ... won't hijack your thread anymore ladies ... I know you are all beautiful ... no matter how big you are ....

mears · 29/06/2003 10:44

Hi susanmt. It is advisable to have IV antibiotics in labour and they are best to be given at least 4 hours prior to delivery to prevent the baby developing early onset group B strep infection. You do not need to have a drip - a cannula will do to get access to the vein. Benzylpenicillin should be given 4 hourly until delivery. If you are allergic to penicillin, the antibiotic of choice is clindamycin, 6 hourly.
There is a lot of info on the groupB website here

grommit · 29/06/2003 17:13

Susanmt - glad you are out of hospital and fine. I just got out of hospital too - suspected blood clot on lung!! Very scarey - docs now think I have bad chest infection so on anti-biotics and feeling exhausted!

whellid · 29/06/2003 18:18

Grommit, glad that it was a false alarm, and I hope it clears up soon.

monkey · 01/07/2003 13:55

just come back from 20 week scan. Very excited. Inadvertantly found out it's a boy - I was so sure it would be so I'm very excited. Trouble is I now have 20 weeks to keep the truth from dh, plus I'm now totally fixated on the name Aidan. which dh doesn't like. I can't get it out of my head & now I know it's a boy, just can't help talking to him - little Aidan. Dh HATES it though!

Went with my 2 - was worried they'd be unruly, but they didn't even want to come in - preferred to stay in waiting room playing with lego! Funny thing is, they really wanted to come & watch the nurse take blood!

Got bounty -equivalent pack. Ds 1 excitedly looking through it & pulled out a dummy. He asked what it was - a dummy, I said. "What's that for? Is it for shutting them up?" Looks like he's got the right idea!

Monkey - really like the name Aidan - it is on my list - dh is unsure - he prefers George (?!).
Well - only 18 weeks and it has started already..."how many weeks are you?..,really? only 18? oh you are very big..." AGGGHHHHH! Why are people so insensitive - do they think we like being fat with the prospect of getting hugely obese..??!!!! Rant over

WideWebWitch · 01/07/2003 14:29

Oh Grommit, I know the feeling, see my rants on the subject below. I'm going to perfect a really pissed off look I think, to throw at people who even look like they're thinking of mentioning my size. Monkey, at the dummy comment, we don't get them here in packs I don't think, what a shame, I love 'em. Glad it was a good scan, I have mine on Monday, so fingers crossed. Not taking ds this time I don't think, still worried something will be wrong (must get a grip!)

Lisalisa - poor you and your gallstones! I dont know if it is anything like kidney stones, but if it is then you are doing well to cope on tramadol!
I had a wee word with my dh (GP) and he said just what your doc said - that tramadol isn't normally used in pregnancy just because there isn't enough knowledge about what it can do. If you are only taking it intermittently then you dont have to worry about addiction in either you or the baby. You have to make sure you dont take it once you are in labour, though, cos if you have any other painkillers along with tramadol it can cause respiratory depression in your baby. Oh but you said you're having a section - so that doesnt really apply!
I am sure they are giving you the painkillers and keeping an eye on you because that is the safest route in pregnancy. I have the option of having a stent put in my ureter to allow the stones to pass, but we've decided not to go for that as the risk of GA and I would also have to go to Glasgow to have it done, and then it could be hard to remove after the baby is born. We decided surgery wasnt really an option. I doubt you'd be able to have your gb out at the same time as a section (think someone mentioned that on the health thread) as you'd need a different surgeon and a general for that, and there is quite a risk of infection following a gallbladder op, which you wouldn't want just after having a baby.
Hope this helps. The anaethetist who has put me back onto pethidine (he's a pain specialist) said that it is important to keep pain under control in pregnancy as it can stress the baby out if you are in pain and eventually affect its growth, so if you are sore you should take the painkillers.
Take care and hang on in there!!

eefs · 03/07/2003 16:37

this pregnancy is so different to my last one - I'm 19 weeks and still not showing a lot - I still fit my normal clothes (granted not my fitted clothes, and I've definitely outgrown all bra's). Last time, while I hid the pregnancy for quite a while, I had gained weight all over at this stage. I'm actually quite concerned, I'm going to ask my gp at the next visit if she can check that the baby is growing ok, but I am feeling a lot of kicks so all should be well. Could it be due to having a different sex child? (I do't know the sex, just guessing). How's everyone else doing?

Rhubarb · 04/07/2003 15:43

Eefs, I'm just the same! Last time I was showing much earlier and was much bigger! Now I'm 17 weeks and still getting into my jeans. But last time I had a lot of water with the baby, so maybe not this time, also it could be positioned more to the back I suppose. What sex did you have last time? I had a girl, though everyone said that it was boy because I was carrying her at the front. I can feel slight flutterings now too and am actually looking forward to meeting 'it' for the first time via the scan!

StripyMouse · 04/07/2003 17:41

I had heard that many women show a lot earlier second time round so interesting to read the last two posts. I reckon I am about the same as last time, possibly slightly smaller. I put it down to starting slightly heavier than last time (flat tummy turning into bump being more noticeable than bit flabby turning into podgy bump). I am also being much more careful about what I eat than last time (failed miserably this last week as there was an offer on for Haagen Daz ice cream, but generally better!) so maybe these two things are making it less noticeable -dunno really, but interesting to hear about other bumps comapred with first time round.
I had my scan on Tues and was relieved to find all is well - so far so good. Great how they can check for so many things and look at so much in huge detail. Knowing what to expect this time round meant that I really enjoyed it more than with DD?s scan. Couldn?t tell what sex luckily - don?t want to know as the suspense will (hopefully) keep me focussed on the "end result". TBH would like another girl as our DD is such a treasure but a boy would be lovely too.

grommit · 04/07/2003 18:48

Stripeymouse - pleased your scan went well! I( am also very envous of all you skinnies - I am HUGE - much bigger than last time

oh and well done for winning that travel cot, www, you lucky thing. There you are - something new for baby!

StripyMouse · 06/07/2003 21:18

www - good luck for Monday. I know what you mean about that element of doubt. I was on a high after mine for about half an hour - just long enough for me to consider what was next on my irrational and purely emotion-driven list of things to worry about.... now I am just worrying about more trivial things like wondering why my boobs are growing much bigger anf faster than my bump....

Rachael17 · 06/07/2003 22:38

Monkey, I am very pleased about the travel cot, really thrilled! There's no way we can afford one so it's fab, thanks mumsnet. Thanks for the good wishes re the scan too, I'll let you know how it goes.

eefs · 07/07/2003 09:18

rhubarb - glad I'm not the only one. I actually prefer my shape this pregnancy but am a wee bit concerned that everything is growing ok. Last time I had a boy, so it must be a girl this time. Good luck with your scans, you lucky things, my next one is at 32 wks. WWW congrats on the travel cot, it looks like a brilliant one.

WideWebWitch · 07/07/2003 14:24

We've just got back from the 20 week scan which was wonderful. The man was lovely and kind and says everything's looking fine. Best of all though, and I'm absolutely gobsmacked, he's fairly sure (90%) it's a girl! I am so happy, having been told at 12 weeks 80% likely a boy (already have one and really wanted a girl). We're now feeling very reassured and excited. He also said she's moving lots and he's no idea why I can't feel much (been panicking about it too) but it's not because I'm lardy as "no, it's not that, you're not chubby" !! So not only was there great news but a compliment thrown in too, which I needed after all the comments about my size from school gate mothers. I'm very, very happy

How exciting www!!
