Nuchal scan shows one in 3 risk - feeling sad and stunned.

With utmost respect and admiration for all parents of children with DS, DH and I both grew up with younger relatives with severe SN, and although we know there are no guarantees in life as well as many fantastic families affected by DS, we were always going ahead with screening.

Had the nuchal this evening (12+4) and it's all very sad, confusing and conflicting news. One in three risk of DS and a one in 36 of Edwards. My bloods (w 9) were crazy bad (Dr said she expected a MC when she first saw the data). The neck measurement is 2,7 but weirdly the bad blood value does not indicate DS, more like Edwards, which I understand is a more severe chromosome abnormality. The baby is big and long, which could explain the bigger neck, and the fingers perfect, which speaks against Edwards. I'm 35 and this is #1. Being fast tracked for placenta biopsy - spending tomorrow at hospital hankering for a free slot - and would really appreciate to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

The baby was v wriggly and beautiful, heartbeat normal.

Thank you so much. x

I know someone given 1 in 6 chance of downs and had a perfect baby I know another given 1 in 6000ish and her baby had downs. Don't give up hope - hope all is well.

Good luck for tomorrow - been lurking - hope all is well.

If you are interested, FISH is Fluoro In-Situ Hybridization.
Its just the technique used to produce the slides which are analysed by the cytogeneticists (of whom DH is one)

All the very best today - thinking of you.

mumoverseas · 29/09/2008 08:29

Mandy, I've been watching your thread although not posted before. Had to just say that I will be thinking of you today and the next few days whilst you are waiting and I'm sure there are a lot of other people on MN thinking of you. x

Hi Mandy, I have been thinking of you this week. I hope today goes as well as it can and that you won't have to wait too long for the results. Take the best care of each other. Lots of Love x

I've just seen this and like many here have been through similar with DD1. She's now 2 but it still feels like yesterday when I hear stories like yours.

Hope the amnio went ok and best of luck with the results

Hi Mandy73

Hope you're OK.

xx

Mandy73 · 01/10/2008 16:30

Well girls all your kind thoughts and well wishes seem to have worked. It's carefully optimistic news.
My amnio is back and it shows none of the three most common chromosome abnormalities despite the insane 1 in 3 risk given to us.

However they will keep investigating, esp. the heart and growth. Should know more by end of Nov.

Just spoke to DH on the phone, v shaky, want to be sick, laugh & cry. So very grateful.

Thanks everyone and lots of love.
xx

pelvicflawed · 01/10/2008 17:33

So pleased for you Mandy73 All the very best with the future monitoring

LittleMyDancingForJoy · 01/10/2008 18:19

Great news Mandy! If it's any help, my consultant said they don't worry too much about the heart until the nuchal measurement is over 3.5mm, and I see yours is 2.7mm, so fingers crossed you'll be fine. Obviously nothing is guaranteed, but wishing you loads and loads of luck for future scans etc!

loobeylou · 01/10/2008 18:57

Mandy, sorry you have had to go through all this, i have been there and know the heartache

a word of caution - they should have told you it will take about 2 weeks for the full cultures of the cells from the amnio to be grown, before they can rule out ALL chromosome abnormalities

we had a high risk of the 3 common trisomies from our bloods at abou 12 weeks tho nuchal fold was normal. we had amnio 2 days after christmas, and we had a call on new years eve that we were negative for the 3 most common trisomies we had been at high risk of, cue shaking crying feeling sick with relief etc, only to be devastated 2 weeks later when we got a call and had to go into hosp and it was something much rarer than even those.

Sorry, but you should be aware that it is not over yet - having said that, the odds are still in your favour and there is nothing you can do to change the results so just take care and look after yourself

my thoughts are with you

kizzie · 01/10/2008 19:03

Hi Mandy - so glad you have had good news today. Keeping everything crossed for you . Hope you get some decent sleep tonight i imagine its been in short supply recently.

Kizzie x

meep · 01/10/2008 19:08

Mandy - I am so pleased for you - you have given me hope for my amnio next week. Will catch up with you on the March thread!

mrslurkalot · 01/10/2008 20:33

O Mandy, I am so happy for you. When I had my first set of results back I was told that it was VERY, VERY unlikely that any other chromosome abnormalities would be there esp with my nuchal measurement which I recall was similar to yours. You probably just have 'dodgy blood' like me!
I hope that you can relax a bit now and ENJOY your pregnancy!
Lots of love, I will be looking out for your birth announcement in March!

morningpaper · 01/10/2008 21:08

great news Mandy!
