This is the earliest they can scan me. The docs that do the scans at my local hospital are away, so I've have to go to another one.

Diege · 13/10/2008 20:03

How are things tonight Vicky? Has the bleeding settled? Have been in same situation as you, and know how distressing the waiting is. Hoping you can get some rest over the next day or so.

daisy5 · 13/10/2008 20:54

VickyJane - So sorry to hear you are having it tough. It really annoys me that no one ever seems to be able to get quick scans. It is always a wait and so hard to wait. I went in hyperventilating with concern and they still told me to wait until the following week when my scan was scheduled. I went private in the end and paid £85. They got me in on the same day which was such a relief. My dp was stunned.

diege - aside from having had an mc, the reason I want to scan at 8 weeks is this 'Research has shown that if you see a heartbeat at 6 weeks of pregnancy, the chances of the pregnancy continuing are 78%. A heartbeat at 8 weeks increases the chance of a continuing pregnancy to 98% and at 10 weeks to 99.4%. So things could still go wrong, but as long as there is a heartbeat, the risk of miscarriage decreases as the weeks go by'.

sussexoldspot · 13/10/2008 21:40

Evening and big hellos to you, swaliswan and ladyhelen!

How did you all manage to get your early scans? Did you have to go private, or is it something you can have as a matter of course, via your GP? Like many of you, have had 2 mcs and the thought of having to wait until 12 weeks (am only 5.5 weeks now) is murder. All advice welcome!

TMD so sorry again for you. Keeping fingers crossed. What a horrible wait.

SnoopDog · 13/10/2008 21:45

sweet talk your doc sussex,

you need to get them on side,

or ask your local epu if they have self referal,

a + e is always a last good and often effective resort do make sure you go in normal working hours

sussexoldspot · 13/10/2008 21:47

Ah, snoop, will do. GP is lovely, so that should be OK. Thank you

VickyJane77 · 14/10/2008 08:56

Goodmorning ladies, the bleeding settled last night, but I had some more this morning. I'm off to the docs in a minute for my booking in appointment! Trying to relax and be positive, I've got an exam tomorrow so I'll focus on revision for that today. The scan is an hour after the exam xxx

winemakesmummyclever · 14/10/2008 09:22

Hiya folks

Only seem to be getting on here around once a week at the moment, so lots to catch up on. Bear with me .

scotlass - hope you have had a lovely time with dh

daisy - hope your dd is better. Ds was ill when my ms was at its height and I regularly joined him at the toilet (barf).

Hi & welcome to the new ladies - hope you are here for a long and uneventful stay. So good to see you back here sussex - crossing everything for and sending sticky bean vibes.

TMD - your GP sounds like a lazy arse. Are you still bleeding? Hope not. He should have done some bloods to get a baseline hcg level and then later bloods could have assessed whether your levels were moving in the right direction. I always tell everyone who is experiencing symptoms of mc to just go straight to A&E. Even if they just take some bloods and then refer you up to the EPU, you are in the system, things are being recorded and monitored.

daisy5 - we are very fluffy and lovable on this thread too .

hairytoe & MsG - just try to take one day at a time. It is a bit of a trite statement, I know, but it has been the only way many of us have been able to keep sane and retain varying levels of positivity. Plus venting on here helps a helluva lot.

ladyhelen - glad the scan went well and good luck for tomorrow's scan.

vickyjane - hope that things have settled down and that you are getting as much rest as possible. Hope that your scan tomorrow is positive - will be thinking of you.

I have my 21w scan tomorrow morning and keep managing to convince myself that something is wrong (you are not alone daisyj). Will have to give myself a good kick up the backside later on for being so daft and worrying so much. Ooh, that will work for about 10 minutes

Dh is going into work late tomorrow so he'll be with me for the scan bit. Hoping that he will be able to happily sit at then end of the bed recognising all the required bits and bobs like he did with ds. Then I just have to argue my case for a change of consultant. Dh doesn't trust this one I'm under to come should there be problems at delivery, even during office hours. So will ask to swap to the fab guy who delivered ds (don't know many consultants who would come in for a crash cs at 6am - love the man!)

Phew! I think that's me caught up with everyone now. Will post tomorrow after the scan (fingers crossed).

LoobyLou36 · 14/10/2008 09:32

Hi. I'm new to mumsnet. I've got my first scan in 2 days time and am SSOOOO NERVOUS. I had a mc in June at 5 wks. I'm now 10+5 and just hope when I go there'll be something there to see.. just can't get too excited in case it all go's wrong again. Trying not to be too pessimistic - I have all the symptoms still, larger breasts, sickness, no waist etc. so the signs are good I guess.

Wheelybug · 14/10/2008 09:40

Welcome Loubyloo - good luck with the scan.

Good luck with the scan too Vickyjane and the exam. What a lot to cope with !

And good luck with the scan (spot a theme ?) WMMC !

And good luck to anyone else who has a scan that my fluffy head has forgotten !

Sussex - my GP wouldn't give me an NHS early scan. She said 'you'll know if something goes wrong because you'll be bleeding'. I then questioned the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy as I'd been on clomid to which she replied 'if its ectopic you'll be in lots of pain and be bleeding a lot you'll know about it'. Er thanks, thats exactly what I needed to hear. However, I think I was unlucky and had I gone to a different gp at the practice I may have got one. Instead I paid to have them done (I had one at 7 weeks and that was a bit inconclusive so went back at 10 weeks). Money well spent though as it made the first trimester easier to deal with.

Wheelybug · 14/10/2008 09:41

oosp sorry - I sneezed whilst trying to post the message !!

LoobyLou36 · 14/10/2008 09:45

Thanks Wheelybug. Has anyone on here had a nuchal transclucency scan? If all goes well on thur that's the next step I guess. My local hospital in Hereford doesn't offer this as an option only the 16 wk blood test. As I'm 36 already I'd rather have the more accurate diagnosis of high/low risk. Apparently the 16 wk is 60% accurate but nuchal+blood in 90%. So I'll have to go to Cardiff and pay £180 for peace of mind.

Wheelybug · 14/10/2008 10:05

Looby - I'm very lucky with my NHS hospital, they always seem to be fairly forward with antenatal scanning and actually do the new combined test on the NHS (combines the nuchal with blood tests for even greater accuracy). I even got a nuchal on the NHS 4 years ago with dd. Its such a shame though that there is so much difference across health authorities.

LoobyLou36 · 14/10/2008 10:10

Wheelbybug. I am just hoping everything goes okay on thursday so that I can get to the next stage. Then I can start to worry about being too old and possibly being high risk. I think i'll always be worried about something. I even asked the mw at my booking in appointment if I could have lost the baby and not realised - how dum do I sound

Wheelybug · 14/10/2008 10:20

We all understand Looby. You will always be worried about something but it will get easier. Its definitely easier now for me than it was 10 weeks ago (am 18.5 weeks) but I am now starting to worry about my 22 week scan (dd had growth problems which showed up at 22 weeks so we have that to worry about as well as all the other things that could possibly be wrong !). We're just a bunch of nutters here !

If its any consolation I had a much lower risk this time round than I did 4 years ago with dd so age isn't always a factor.

LoobyLou36 · 14/10/2008 10:26

Thanks Wheelybug. Support much appreciated. My hubby is very good but I don't think he really understands - keeps saying "We'll there's nothing we can do about it if it does go wrong - that's life" He has a 10 year old dd from previous marriage so having a child is probably not as urgent a need for him.

sussexoldspot · 14/10/2008 11:27

"You'll know something is wrong because you'll be bleeding"

So, yes, ectopics, moles, and mmc only exist in Toontown, do they?

Grrr.

I only now go to the male GP at our surgery, the female (with 4 beautiful, healthy kids) said "Oh crikey, nature's way!" when I had my mmc.

daisyj · 14/10/2008 12:29

VickyJane - good luck for tomorrow. You sound like you're being very strong. So sorry, when I posted yesterday I was having a somewhat self-indulgent moment of panic, and didn't see your posts till now.

Looby - you don't sound dumb at all, it's a perfectly reasonable question to ask your midwife. I'm 36, like you, and had combined scan on NHS. I did pay £150 for an early private scan at 8 weeks, though, and it worth every penny.

Also my very lovely French (male) GP told me that they don't think you're old till you're 37 there (!) - so try not to focus too much on that.

WMMC - good luck with the scan, hon - can't wait to hear how it goes.

Hi to sussex, ladyh and everyone else.

Off to my 16-week check now.

xx

daisyj · 14/10/2008 12:31

sussex and wheelybug - at the lady GPs by the way. CLUELESS cretins.

daisy5 · 14/10/2008 12:43

Yes, my cousin who lives in France was told that she was one of their 'youngest' pregnant mums - and she was 36 at the time!

There seems to be too much in the press in the moment about older mothers. It is a bit disproportional.

LoobyLou36 · 14/10/2008 12:52

Blimey - never thought of myself as young at 36! {smile]
My midwife was a bit negative about me being older.

daisyj · 14/10/2008 16:10

looby - that's just weird. How old's you're midwife - 16? I never cease to be shocked at some of the things health'care' 'professionals' come out with! No one's ever even mentioned my age except in a positive way. We're 36 fgs, not 50!

The French are much more sensible. They also don't seem to have much truck with not eating brie or drinking wine during pregnancy either! Sounds all right to me .

Midwife check went fine. She found the hb really easily - and even though I have my own doppler it's still nice to have the midwife listen and confirm all is OK. All in all she was very nice and laid back, so I'm back to feeling calmer again.

TMD · 14/10/2008 19:55

Hi all, well touch wood no bleeding today, still lower abdominal cramps not too painful just like period dullness and lower back ache plus twinges in my breasts..oh and i seem to be peeing alot today too, so i'm hoping all the right signs! 6 weeks tomorow if all still ok find out thurs I can't wait til friday and he did say when bleeding had stopped to re do test......

Good luck LoobyLou36 for the scan and VickyJane77 Thinking of you x

joyfuleyes · 14/10/2008 20:06

Hi everyone - I'm sorry to have disappeared I wanted to thank you for all your kind messages when I had my last freak out - they helped so much.

I had a scan today & everything looks okay for 7 weeks (was feeling quite calm but now I'm back to the panic). I'm going to keep a low profile for the next couple of weeks, I've found ignoring 'it' as much as possible is pretty much the only way I can cope. I have another scan in two weeks & I'm hoping that if all is well then I'll feel a bit more able to deal with the pregnancy.

My dr has been absolutely excellent, I'm so grateful that she seems to recognize what a basket case I am.

I hope you don't mind me going back to lurk mode for a while. Love to you all xx
